ALWAYS CARINGCOMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
SUMMER 2020
Greene County Medical Center Welcomes New CEOOn June 4, 2020, the Greene County Medical Center Board of Trustees announced the hiring of a new CEO, Tracy Warner. Warner had been serving as the interim CEO at the Medical Center since March 26, 2020.
Warner comes to Jefferson with 28+ years of experience in the health care industry. Her last position was Director of Rural Health Resources for UnityPoint Health – Des Moines for 14 years. As director, she spent her time supporting the UnityPoint Health – Des Moines network of six rural hospitals and was instrumental in arranging the implementation of numerous resources including trustee and leadership education, recruitment of senior leaders, support for strategic planning, networking among key hospital personnel, regulatory compliance, job shadowing, the Epic electronic health record, telemedicine grants, clinical and operational best practices and much more.
Prior to her job at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines, she served in various finance policy related roles at the Iowa Hospital Association for over 13 years, including as Vice President of Finance Policy. Her commitment to rural health care, along with strong collaboration skills and a desire to contribute to the overall well-being of Greene County residents, will be valuable assets for Greene County Medical Center.
Warner commented, “Rural health care facilities are so vital to rural economies. A recent Iowa Hospital Association study showed that Greene County Medical Center had a $25 million impact on the local economy in 2019. I am very passionate about rural health care and want to continue to build upon the successes of this great resource for Greene County.”
While Warner said this was never her intended career goal, all paths led her to where she is now. Her personal life timing, along with her professional skills, are a great fit to continue her passion for health care in Greene County.
Warner received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas. She and her husband, Rick, have four children and three grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys attending sporting events with her family, including Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals baseball and Kansas City Chiefs football. She also enjoys trips to anywhere with a beach and sunshine.

I’ve always envied people that knew exactly what they wanted to be when they grew up. When I went to college, I chose business school because I had heard “you can do anything with a business degree.” I happened to get into healthcare when I moved to Iowa and landed at the statewide hospital association. The job I found nearly 30 years ago has turned into a passion for supporting and advocating on behalf of Iowa hospitals. Although I didn’t choose a straightforward career path to a hospital CEO, I’m very fortunate to have had the opportunities to learn and grow in this industry.
I am so excited to be in Jefferson in my new role. From my experiences of working with the Medical Center the past 14 years, I am familiar with the great things the organization has accomplished and am eager to build upon this great foundation.
One of my top goals as a CEO includes being active in economic development initiatives, and to share the story of the Medical Center and the value of strong healthcare for the economic well-being of the county. I will also actively promote our mission of being “Always Here, Always Caring.”
Thank you for welcoming me into your community. I’m humbled for the opportunity that will allow me to continue serving my passion for rural health care, and ensuring the availability of a thriving community resource at Greene County Medical Center.

The Greene County Medical Center is looking for volunteers! If you want to be part of being Always Here, Always Caring, and the Auxiliary, the Medical Center has two opportunities for you.
We are in need of door screeners at our main entrance during the day. This is an important role to help keep the Medical Center and our communities safe and healthy. Due to COVID-19, all visitors and patients are asked health questions and their temperatures are taken. As a front-line worker, you will be equipped with masks, gowns and face shields. Our thermometers are “no-touch,” so there is no physical contact with visitors. We are looking for all volunteers, especially if you are a retired health care professional.
We are also in need of drivers for our “Healthy Rides” program. This is a project funded by Grow Greene County through Public Health. As a volunteer, you will take Greene County residents in need of transportation to their appointments at the medical center, Greene County Family Medicine Clinic or McFarland Clinic. Public Health will maintain the volunteer driving schedule and will call you when a patient needs a ride. Insurance is covered by the medical center. During COVID-19, personal protective equipment will be provided. We are recruiting volunteers in order to provide training and answer your questions soon.
Volunteers must be in good health and training will be provided for both opportunities.
Thank you for considering both of these opportunities to help us continue to provide excellent and safe services to Greene County residents.
Please call Foundation Director Nancy Houska at 515-386-0108 if you are interested in either opportunity or have questions.

THANK YOU, DONORS!ALWAYS, AND ESPECIALLY DURING COVID, WE THANK OUR DONORS FOR MASKS, SHIELDS, GOWNS AND MUCH MORE!
Greene County Medical Center, the Greene County Medical Center Foundation, and medical center employees have made the promise to be “Always Here, Always Caring” for the communities we serve. These past several weeks, our communities have stepped up and shown they are “Always Here, Always Caring” for us by their support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are humbled and grateful for the many donations we have received – face shields, handmade face masks and gowns, donations of food for our workers on the frontline, and even a shed for COVID-19 testing. Donations big and small – we appreciate them all.
In May, we began to reopen for surgeries, procedures, clinic visits, diagnostic testing and more, in a safe and efficient way. We continue to have precautions in place, which include screening our staff, limiting visitors, wearing masks and continuing to social distance with our staff and patients in our waiting areas. We appreciate your patience as we work through this pandemic in the coming weeks.
Health systems across the country, including Greene County Medical Center, are facing unprecedented times in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. The challenge of decreased revenue - associated with the discontinuation of non-elective surgeries for several weeks and fewer hospital and clinic visits - coupled with increased expenses from preparation for the pandemic has led to the need to continue to be even stronger financial stewards of our resources.
Now, more than ever, Greene County Medical Center needs you, our donors, supporters and friends. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to the Greene County Medical Center Foundation, mailed to 1000 West Lincoln Way, Jefferson, Iowa 50129. You can also make a one-time or recurring gift online on the Foundation’s webpage by visiting gcmchealth.com/foundation.
Thank you for showing you care for us, and supporting your community Medical Center. Greene County Medical Center is Always Here, Always Caring.

Due to COVID-19, two new tax benefits are available to donors through the CARES Act. For people who no longer itemize their charitable giving, the CARES Act will allow these individual taxpayers to deduct donations to charity of up to $300 on their 2020 federal tax return, even though they take the standard deduction. Married-filing-jointly taxpayers will get an above-the-line deduction of up to $600.
The Charitable Giving Deduction Cap has been raised. The CARES Act lifts caps to 100%, from 60%, for individuals and joint filers, while corporations will see their cap lifted to 25% for 2020. These are truly substantial changes to the tax treatment of donations. For individuals, it could theoretically mean zero taxable income if someone gives big. We encourage you to talk to your tax advisor if you are interested in taking advantage of these tax benefits.
