Duncan Mackay Editor

Britain’s best connected Olympic journalist

During the 16 years he worked at The Guardian and The Observer he regularly broke a number of major exclusive stories.

Mackay’s ground-breaking stories were recognised when he was voted the British Sports Journalist of the Year in 2004 and in the same year, won the Sports News Story of the Year. In 2010 he was named as British Sports Internet Writer of the Year (2009) by the Sports Journalists’ Association.

His impeccable contacts within the Olympic Movement were brilliantly demonstrated when in 2005, on the morning of the vote to decide which city would host the 2012 Olympics, he was the only British journalist to predict correctly that London would beat Paris.

Mackay was also the only journalist to carry the Olympic Torch when it passed through London on its way to Beijing in April 2008.

Mackay regularly appears on Sky News, BBC News 24, BBC World, Sky Sports News, BBC Radio 5, talkSPORT and CNBC as well as several other radio and television stations around the world, including NBC and CBS. He has written several books, including the highly critically-acclaimed Running Scared: How Athletics Lost its Innocence, Linford Christie, The History of the Olympics and China Gold: China’s Quest for Global Power and Olympic Glory.

Mackay has attended five Summer and four Winter Olympic Games.

Mike Rowbottom Chief feature writer

Mike Rowbottom, one of Britain’s most talented sportswriters, has covered the last five Summer and four Winter Olympics for The Independent and now writes for insidethegames.

He contributes regularly to the IAAF Diamond League website, BA High Life magazine and Rowing and

Regatta, the official British Rowing magazine. He co-authored Olympic silver medallist Roger Black’s biography How Long’s the Course? In 2010 he wrote Usain Bolt: Fast As Lightning. In 2011 he wrote Foul Play – the Dark Arts of Cheating In Sports.

A recent assessment of him by the Sports Journalists’ Association observed: “His well-balanced and gentle work is widely admired by colleagues and athletes alike. His work at The Independent included a highly regarded weekly column that took a humorous look at sport.” Rowbottom has also written for the Daily Mail, The Times, The Observer and The Guardian.

Emily Goddard Subeditor and reporter

As well as being subeditor, Emily Goddard is the winter sports correspondent for insidethegames. She also dedicates her time to reporting on her other key sports, which include gymnastics, equestrian, hockey and judo. Goddard

has broken a number of exclusives, has interviewed leading figures in sport administration and has reported on location from world-class sporting events across the globe.

David Owen Chief columnist

David Owen is a former sports editor of the Financial Times. In 25 years as a journalist, he has had a hand in covering four football World Cups, two Summer Olympics, a G7 Summit and general elections in three different countries.

He also reported on the landmark 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2011 International Olympic Committee Sessions and conducts regular interviews with world sports leaders ranging from UEFA head

Michel Platini to IOC President Jacques Rogge.

Tom Degun Reporter

Tom Degun, who graduated from the University of Bedfordshire with a BA First Class honours degree in Sport, Media and Culture, is a reporter and the Paralympics correspondent for insidethegames.

Degun’s interview with Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt resulted in his highly acclaimed first article for insidethegames, a blog titled: “Up close and personal with the world’s fastest man”.

Since joining insidethegames, Degun has covered a large variety of major global sporting events including the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, the Summer and Winter Youth Olympic Games, the IPC World Athletics Championships and London 2012.

Degun has established a reputation for his outstanding reporting and acutely-observed style of writing while he has broken a number of exclusives that have captured the attention of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.
