ROKURO Interviews Elica Le Bon

I caught up with the fantastic Original singer/songwriter Elica Le Bon, Watchthis space, This Girl is going to be big in 2015.. 1. When did you first start singing and how did you figure out youcould sing? When I was a little girl I used to love Christina Aguilera. I was obsessed with thesoulfulness of her voice, it really moved me. I think i was inspired by that andever since, nothing has given me greater joy than to sing. 2. On tracks of your's like "Beautiful Game" I can hear easterninfluences coming through, is this something to do with your ethnicorigin or is it just you experimenting with different styles?I think it's probably a subconscious byproduct of listening to so manyTimbaland beats. That, possibly coupled with my middle eastern heritage thatsubconsciously seeps through to my artistry. Timbaland is so experimentalwith his music, he always uses abstract sounds, synths and styles. I'mfascinated by that kind of creativity, so I have a predilection to do the same 3. What's your favourite kind of music to listen to at the moment?I'm always into music that has feeling. That evokes pathos. That has a soul. Ilove everything that has soul. Right now, i've got 'only one' by Kanye West onrepeat. It brings me to tears. 4. What city do you currently reside in and do you perform live at themoment? If yes where can are readers catch you in 2015.I currently reside in London. I'll be performing live a lot this summer, so you canstay up to date with that on any of my social media accounts. 5. Is singing your full time career and If you weren't singing, whatwould you be doing?Yes it is. I often think about what I would do if it weren't music. It would haveto be something that allows me to express myself creatively and explore thataspect of myself consistently. Possibly writing. It's what I do anyway.

6. Do you play any instrumentsI'm weak on the piano. Other than that, no. 7. What are the five things you can't live without? Music! My iphone, of course! My laptop, logic pro, and a mic. (andobviously my friends and family but i'm assuming we aren't referring topeople) 8. If you were to give someone advice on life or how to startsongwriting, what would you say?On life, I would say… do whatever is necessary to kill your ego. You willbecome free when you do that. With song writing, I would say… neverforce it. Never try to think of lyrics or a subject or idea. Be influenced bylife. I always catch myself in the middle of conversations scribbling downexchanges that would make excellent lyrics. Songs can only be felt whenthey are real, and to be real they have to come from real sources. 9. Who are your favorite musicians? Groups? CD'sMy favourite musician of all time is Kanye west, followed closely by Jay Z.I've listened to Jay since I was 14 so i've grown up with him. He's a part ofmy transition into adulthood and it always brings an element of nostalgiawhen I hear his old stuff. 10. What are your plans for your singing and songwriting in 2015?Really, REALLY big things. Don't believe me just watch! Erica Le Bon - Wish I Stayed is out now!www.soundcloud.com/elicalebon

In episode 1 we meet the characters and learn a few things: Image is important somake sure you keep yourself looking tidy, You need to shut down your rudeness, a guymay have made a mistake and been to prison, but give him a second chance. Showingoff your macho abilities may not always get the girl, but handing out freebies will.Heading over to Rinse FM, Yinka discusses dating faux pas, singer Lady Lykes is lovingher butt, and we learn not to ask a girl what is going on with her hair. Fast-paced snippets piecing together a day, with humour running through. Scenes arelinked together with musical interludes moving the story forward. Shake your head Singing “no no” whilst shaking the head side to side will relax you and it will also show youif you are a tense singer. If you crack whilst doing this ‘easy’ exercise, you are squeezingyour neck muscles to get notes. You don’t have to perform this exercise for very long; athree-note scale will suffice. This exercise is excellent for disengaging the neck muscles. If you have a tense neck, how can you possibly sing comfortably? Larynx Keep the larynx neutral. This is easier said than done, but if you push up to sing the highnotes, so will your larynx. If the larynx is too high, the neck muscles will pop out andshortly the chords will disconnect, which makes that horrible crack sound. If the larynxis too low, ie. when you move the chin and head down to reach the very low notes, youare blocking off the trachea so there is no free flow of air. If there’s no free flow of air,the chords can’t open and close to create a tone. Keeping the larynx neutral is soimportant in developing a powerful, clear sound, but more importantly, a correctlyplaced larynx will prevent you from damaging your voice. The larynx should remain neutral at all times when singing, no matter how high or lowthe notes are. The best advice to keep the larynx neutral is to change your thoughtstowards singing. Instead of reaching up for the high notes, imagine that the sound iscoming from your forehead, not your mouth. Take everything a little higher. Imagine thevocal chords are placed in your cheeks and not your throat. This might sound strange, but if you place everything higher, you won’t have to push up, because the voice isalready there. So when you hit a high note, push the diaphragm down for support andpower, and bring the note down the front of the face. Using your fingers to pull the notedown helps to get you in the moment. Vice versa for when you’re singing low notes. When a note at the bottom of your range is approaching, again imagine the chords areat the cheeks, and as the pitch descends, move up the face so eventually the note feelslike it is projecting from the forehead. The swallow muscles Formally known as the diagastric muscles, these little things are used when we swallow.Put you thumb on the squidgy bit under your chin and swallow. You feel the musclescome down? The reason that happens is because when we swallow we don’t want foodto go down the ‘wrong hole’ – the trachea. That’s why sometimes when you eat youhave a coughing fit. The swallow muscles haven’t come down to block off the airway. Asyou have probably guessed, we don’t ever want these muscles down when we’re singing(unless of course you need to swallow saliva.) When they do come down, the larynxpushes up (to get out of the way) and with a high larynx comes additional tension. You will know if you use these diagastric muscles if you have a raspy voice after singing. To work on not using these muscles, you need to loosen the jaw and neck (as spokenabout above) and move your placement higher, preferably to the cheeks and not havethe voice feel as though it is coming from the mouth, but from the cheeks. It is amazinghow much your voice will change if you think higher.

SingingWithAmySinging advice for beginners to advanced.

Eliminate Strain Whilst Singing Singing is fun but it isn’t easy. Sometimes we get in the habit of pushing and forcing thevoice to hit those high notes, but when you feel any discomfort and pain, you knowyou’re not doing it right. We strain because we fear a note and we feel that it won’t come with ease, so thenatural thing to do is to force ourselves to get that note. Straining doesn’t lookattractive and it sure won’t do your vocal chords any good. Continually forcing the voiceto sing out of you natural range will damage your voice. Here are a few little tips toprevent straining when singing: How to add power, while decreasing tension The lip trill is a great exercise to effectively warm up the voice and it is a great place tostart for those to struggle to relax whilst performing. Whilst doing the lip trill, imaginethere is no ceiling. There is no end to where your voice can go. No note is too high or low.Bend over for the really high notes with a flat back. The mixed voice never fails to create a fuller sounding voice without adding tension.Singing “meow” up and down a scale will warm up the voice and allow the voice totransition through the breaks. Slide up and down and don’t fear the high notes, just allowthe voice to go through the breaks. Singing “we we we” whilst swaying the head from side to side will relax the mind andbody. If you feel stressed you will be tense and every note will feel like a struggle. Thistechnique helps to relax you. Singing with the tongue out of the mouth I’ve already discussed how the tongue can add tension (refer to the article “Getting theTongue out of the Way.”) So if your tongue isn’t relaxed, it will naturally curl up towardsthe back of the throat and add extra pressure on the chords. Simply perform yourfavourite warm-up whilst hanging the tongue out of the mouth to get the tongue tomove towards the front of the mouth. Over time, your muscles will remember that yourtongue shouldn’t rest at the back of the throat. If it does, you will tense the jaw and singat the back of the throat – this is setting yourself up for an embarrassing break. Vocal fry Vocal fry is like a massage for your voice. It’s that groggy tired sound you make as soonas you wake up. It is the bodies natural way of warming up slowly. Vocal fry connects thechords and it eliminates strain. Singing “woah woah” with vocal fry will put you in arelaxed state. Do it with your eyes closed and you will feel even more at ease. 13

Hello Troy Hudson! Tell us aboutyourself.I am a singer/songwriter and I’ve beensinging since I could speak. It’ssomething that I really enjoy doing andobviously I’m an artist now buthopefully the more you hear, the moreintrigued to go to listen to my music. So that’s how you found yourpassion, when you were young?Yeah, my parent’s had me while theywere young, they were really into musicback then and a lot of family memberswere rappers and break-dancers or DJs.So music was something that was partof my life growing up as a child. Which vocalists inspire you vocaltechniques? My influence comes from a lot of musicback in the 90s as I was born in the late80s so I grew up as a child in the 90s so Ilistened to a lot of artists, influencedfrom Lauren Hill, Mary J bilge, Aaliyah..The 90s RnB artists. How did you get into the career,

and you became a part of the girlgroup?I first started taking the music seriouslyfrom the age of 15. It’s when I started towrite, I first started writing toinstrumentals from some of thefavourite songs that I liked at the time.My next door neighbour Mdot-Eactually started to produce and then westarted to work together and that’swhere it came about and got reallyserious. I’ve just been growing from thewriting. Being in a girl group we got towork with so many different artists aswell as producers and writers, and learnand take things from different people. From that I’ve grown in my own way interms of writing.

Interviews Troy Hudson She is over half way through releasing her 5-part visual EP 'P.Y.T ProtectYour Throne) on My-Ish Music. The first track was released on Tuesday 2ndDec and the 2nd track 'Predicament' ft rapper Incisive dropped on 16th Decon Link Up TV and the 3rd track 6th Jan on Clash who named her as 'One ToWatch' with "supple vocals worthy of Mary J Blige". Each video leads to thenext part of the story leaving everyone in anticipation for the next one, andfollowing her on her journey through the trials and tribulations of love, life andemotion. 'Head Over Heels' from the EP is Sarah Jane Crawford's record ofthe week on 1Xtra, week beginning 19th January. Troy was previously part of girl group RD who were together nearly threeyears and signed to Universal/Polydor, where she excelled and became theaccomplished singer, songwriter and performer she is today takinginfluences from the likes of Brandy, Mary J Blige, Aaliyah, Teedra Moses, JheneAiko and more. Her sound fuses hip hop, r&b, soul, and pop which gives her asound reminiscent of the 90's era. Taking it old school there are not manyR&B singers out there like Troy in the UK and she has stepped out on her ownconfidently with this visual EP project to create something different. “Head Over Heels” filmed in a diner setting has a fun contemporary vibe withthe female lead being madly in love. There is also a humorous element withthe side character, perhaps an understated insight into the next track.. “Predicament” addresses the male lead with the tone taking a deeper mood.Could he be in the wrong, or is he just misunderstood? This is almost aconversation between the characters. And again we have the last shockmoment extending the story.. “Never Hurt Me Again” shoots forward to the couple’s big day, but will it be ahappy ending? This part is the story of the bride-to-be thinking over therelationship and making an important decision..

You went from being in a girl groupto being solo, was that a hardchange? It was a difficult time as I’d spent somuch time with the girls, it had alwaysbeen me and two others, so adjustingand transitioning from that was a bitdifficult, but I got there in the end. What was it like being a supportivegroup and then doing it on yourown? It was different, it felt weird for a whilebecause I was used to having thebackup from the girls, and me to them.So going from one extreme to the next,it was weird at first. But then you getused it, I got back into practice, I wentstraight back in to the studio with Mdot-E and picked up where we left off andgot back into the flow of things. Istarted to find my own way, in terms ofbeing a solo artist, aside form being in agirl group. Your new visual EP is interesting, how did you come up with theinitial ideas for this.. were you intomedia? No, I wasn’t into media, I’ve alwaysdone a bit of acting here and there, aswhen I was younger I went to theatreschool for a while and attended Britschool for a while. In terms of the EP, Iwrote and recorded. When we as acollective listened to the songs back toback, everyone said it sounded like I wastelling a story. It’s natural with peoplewithin the music industry all musicianswill say, when you write a song, youvisual a video to go with it as well. It justseemed like a story went well with it interms of making each song link. Theybring the songs to life, the videos tell a

story and gives the song a story as well,so if you listen you automaticallyimagine the scenario and the situation. The charactes go from being madlyin love and the drama. Thequestions are; is there going to be ahappy ending, and from the trailer, how does she end up in a mentalasylum? Well, the first three videos are about, the fourth will give you a gist of why Iend up in the mental asylum.. you’vejust got to follow what happens. Is it true?I don’t know, maybe! No, not necessarilyfor me. I know a lot of people have saidto me since seeing the first few videos, that they can relate to this and it feelslike I’ve told a story of their lives andexperiences. It’s probably s story that’shappened to somebody. So, when will it all be out?The next video should be out next weekfor Love Don’t Live here, and that’s thestory before the last song which iscontemplating which will follow twoweeks later and again you’ll see me in amadhouse. Where do you find your inspirationfor writing? My inspiration draws from experiences,if not my own, then my peers or peoplearound me. I’ve actually written a song before based off a book that I read. T’sweird, most of my inspiration comefrom experiences, they can come fromdifferent scenarios, whether it be fromdifferent scenarios, whether it be

from a movie I may have watched orsomething I heard on the news, or abook I read. What tips & advice would you havefor anyone who would want to getinto the music industry? I’d tell them to continue to practice andwork on your craft. Improve oneverything. Social media is now aplatform for you to showcase yourtalent and your dream. What betterway to utilise it by putting yourself outthere. Make sure you stay true toyourself and be inspired by others. Butalso showcase you and in the end you’llprobably find that you’ll get the results. Everything is digital now, is it hardto get out there? There are pros and cons of it, when youdo post things, it does get the rightattention, it’s just how you promoteyourself. But at the same time, everybody uses that as a platform toget themselves out there, so that’s acon, but there are a lot of pros form it.It’s easier to use the internet and socialmedia nowadays, it’s becomes thenorm, part of the whole music culture. What was it like writing thestoryboards for your videos? I worked closely with my manager as hehelped direct the videos, and the twoguys, Rob & Ian are a duo called roundHouse Pictures. We listened to thelyrics and see what can be interpretedand how we’ll showcase certain partsof the lyrics aside from putting the videotogether for the song. The lyrics arevery important for visuals as there isalways a key word or key point that willbring an idea to the forefront. The story

boards came about from that, it wasgood fun planning. The wedding dresspart was scary and crazy to me but I hadfun running down the aisle in this big oldpuffy white dress. But I don’t know howI’ll cope if I ever get married becausethat thing is heavy and I had trainers on,so imagine what that would ne like withheels, it too crazy/ Do you want to pursue actingmore? Definitely, its something I used to do asa child before started to do music, I wasalways acting and dancing. Acting wasthe main thing I did, I did quite a lot ofstage plays and a few short films hereand there as a child. Even when I was ina girl group, we got asked to do somethings as well. So I definitely feel i canjump into the acting side. What are you favourite tracks?I like all music, I don’t limit myself withgenre. At the moment I listen to asinger, Arma Patel from New Zealand, she’s a soul singer. She reminds me of amore RnB version of Amy Winehousewith her sound. She’s really good, theway she writes her songs and her musicI can relate to it. She taps into being awoman in this world, so I enjoy it. Myfavourite song of hers is “I’m not thesame”. I’m also listening to Jagged Edge, they’ve got a new album out andthey’ve got a slow song called “hope” itreminds me of the old slow jams and thetempo. What does music mean to you?I know a lot of artist say this, but it

actually is my life. My whole entire life, music has been an influence on me sinceI could walk and talk up until now, so it’sjust everything to me. What have you got planned for thefuture?Definitely more music and visuals. I’mgoing to work towards an album, do afew gigs. Still getting my feet wet backin the industry as a solo artist. I’m goingto be consistent with what I put andkeep on working and grafting until i findmyself in a perfect position, eventhough nothings perfect, but until i findmyself until I’m conformable. Hopefullysell a thousand records further downthe line. Would you like to be a supportingact?I used to do that back in my girl groupdays. Going up and down being on thestage, making new fans. that was one ofthe highlights when I was in a girl group. We used to open for JLS and NDubz, that was a great experience. I’d love toget back into supporting again. Which was your favourite piece toact out?I enjoyed filming Contemplating which isthe asylum one. We actually got a wingoff a hospital, i got loads of my friends tocome down and play mental patients, itwas funny to see them acting crazyeven though they are already. It was funto be in gowns and to be patients, andact like we were crazy women. It was adifferent experience for me as I neverthought id have to play crazy, being in astraight jacket and everything.

Did you get it off lady gaga?No I didn’t but she’s definitely crazy andwacky isn’t she. Just something fun to,something different. Who are the top producers you’dlike to work with?I’d love to work with Timbaland andmissy, I fell like their music has alwaystimeless, even during the times whenthey were at their highest point, I’vealways wanted to work with them. Iwould definitely work with MarkRonson, I’ve been listening to him since Iwas a kid, his ear for music is vast, hecan go from hip hop to soul, and thesong he’s to with Bruno Mars. I wouldeven stepout to doing a track withCalvin Harris, I wouldn’t limit myself toRnB and soul, I would branch out and trydifferent genres. Do you do different genres toimprove your vocals? It can do, with certain genres there arecertain ways you have to sing, well youdon’t have to, but it can broaden yourvoice in different ways. Are there any singing tips youcould give out?Sing in the shower. It helps a lot, thesteam is good or your vocal chords, when you’re utilising that at the sametime t can make a huge difference tothe way that you use voice. I always singin the shower. Tips, you can get themonline, I still do that. I go on YouTube andI’ve got a whole playlist of differentvideos that I find have been very usefuland helpful to me.

Influenced by the sounds of hip-hop, drum and bass and garage, GotSome have beenmaking waves since their track ‘Bassline’ was released via Annie Mac’s, AMP Compilation2013. Having already gained radio support from the likes of Nick Grimshaw, MistaJam and B.Traits,GotSome have firmly cemented themselves as credible producers with a string ofsuccessful remixes for the likes of Basement Jaxx and fellow MTA Records label-mate,MOKO. ‘Vibe Out’ showcases GotSome’s fresh take on bassline house and their unbounded ability to avoid the treadmill of ever interchangeable DJ’s and producers.

4. Where do you draw your inspiration from and How would youdescribe your sound, Deep house, Chilled House, Nu Disco, Or a bit ofall three?I don't looking for inspiration. It comes to me when I feel in a good mood. Iwould describe my sound as Nu Disco with elements of tropical and melodichouse. The main thing for me is a summer feeling in my tracks. 5. Have you found yourself playing more and more gigs recentlyafter the Great year that you had in 2014?Yes, now I have many gigs here in Russia. Also I got a lot of requests from allover the world: Europe, Emirates, Egypt, Brazil... Me and my team are planninga big tour for 2015. 6. Is there any new artists or singers that you have beencollaborating with recently that we should look out for in thefuture? There are many great singers I'm working with at the moment: Gosha, PolinaGriffith, Nick Sinckler. Also I have started to work with Alex Newell, the actorand singer from popular American TV show "Glee". 7. Do you think dance music has become over saturated with labelsand producers easily been able to put out tracks themselves, nowwe are in the digital age, or do you see it as health competition ? If music is just a hobby - put your track without labels. Why not. You don'treally need it. But if you play for high stakes, you should work with a big teamof professionals: labels, management, booking agents. I think competition isonly way to gain, if we talk about music as a business. 8. And finally can you tell us whats next in the pipeline for your self in2015 ?In 2015 I hope to see more people all around the world. Traveling is a greatmotivation for me. I have started work with some big companies and i'msuper exited about this and curious of a result.

“Over here at Slime HQ we’re preparing for a big February with the launch ofHoffman’s debut album, ‘Serenity’. Hoffman is an accomplished producerthat has been on our radar for some time and joined the label last year todeliver the ‘Pieces’ EP which was a very unique, emotive take on garage. Weknew instantly we’d like him to expand that style into an album format, so weasked him to enter studio lockdown and get writing. The result is an 11-track offering that suffuses garage beats with a rich, cinematic feel which is very much in keeping with the Slime aesthetic.Featuring bars from Daytripper and some sublime vocals from Kitty Stewart,it’s a long player that rewards repeated play and we think it’s really going tocement Hoffman’s position as a producer to watch in 2015. On top of that we have the return to the label from Scottish producerBlackboxx. Last year was a big deal for him – his debut release saw some bigsupport in DJs like Hannah Wants and he’s coming back this year with the‘Osaka’ EP which continues his beautiful adaptation of garage intosomething amazingly soulful and reflective. Keep an eye on this guy as he isgoing to be huge this year with upcoming remixes and releases. The biggest news from us this month is something we’ve been working ondeveloping for a while, and that’s launching the booking arm of the label. We’llbe taking the label’s roster of artists on the road across the UK and beyondfor some killer gigs. We’ll be bringing the Slime sound to a city near you verysoon!” Slime RecordingsDesigned to move minds.www.slimerecordings.co.uk

Xenomania Records

It’s a new year and a new culture. Isaiah Dreads is part of this shifting culture inthe UK underground scene that seems to be changing and breaking the rules, and going to places that were forbidden before. At only 16 years old this youngup and coming Grime MC from the West Country can add many achievements tohis name such as performing at Glastonbury, Wireless and Isle Of Wightfestivals. Isaiah shows his range of flows and content exceptionally on this mixtape thatis futuristic, and will be a classic in years to come. He has managed to delve intoa sound unheard of before, mixing up different flows and beats that normallywouldn’t work but do. Laid back productions are twinned with skippy flows andserious conscious lyrics but also the opposite; fun bars with more harderproductions. This emcee has a sound that matches no other. Already co-signed by some major tastemakers in the game, it would be hard notto keep your eye on Isaisah who has been rapping since the young age of 7years old nearly 10 years now! Latest track ‘U See Me’ was Zane Lowe’s NextHype and Mistajam’s Radio Ripper and he has also seen support from DJ Targetand Toddla T and has been on DJ Cameo’s Gimme Grime freestyle. Favourite track you have made?My favourite track i have made is probably a track called “Killa Sound” itsout this year so keep your eyes open!!! Favourite kit for making music?Moog Voyager, Moog Little Phatty, Roland 909 & SH 101 Your Dream Line up (self included)Max Chapman, Ricardo Villalobos, Marco Carola, Jamie Jones & DavideSquillace If you had to DJ a 3hr set of a different Genre what would it be?Funk/Disco One sentence that defines house and techno music?Life would be unliveable without it.

Since having his debut track aired on dance music stalwart Pete Tong’sradio show way back in 2011, Max Chapman has come a long way inestablishing himself as a well respected act within the underground musicscene. The formation of Resonance records and a string of top qualityreleases to his credit behind him including his release of Temperature onLost Records and the remix to Serious by Alex Arnout are just a smallnumber of reasons as to why the name Max Chapman stands out on the UKscene. Prior to the release of DJ Diass - Red District (Max Chapman Remix), onHijacked Records we caught up with Max for his take on the AudiationMagazine HOT 6 Release Date: 23/FEB/2015 www.soundcloud.com/max-chapman
