METHODOLOGY
The research, Journey of Me Insights: What Asia Pacific travellers want, was conducted in May 2017 in collaboration with YouGov. A total of 6,870 respondents from 14 markets in Asia Pacific that have travelled by plane in the last 12 months were sampled. The 14 markets include:

Amadeus believes that no two travellers are the same, and even more so, no two journeys will be the same. At the core of travelling is the creation of experiences that are innately ours.
There are an infinite number of elements that make up the travellers’ DNA. Varying factors may influence my travel experience but what defines the “Journey of Me” are my behaviours, feelings, attitudes, and coping mechanisms.
As travellers today become more savvy and better informed, travel and its elements of surprise, magic and wonder have become increasingly challenging to achieve.
Technology brings promise. Now, we have the opportunity to bring the magic back into travel. But only if we first understand what the traveller wants.
In today’s world of travel, every engagement point matters. Expectations have surpassed personalisation. Beyond relevance, travel providers must be timely and intuitive to shape each individual experience.
In this journey of ME, cultivating relationships and embracing travellers’ individuality should be the priority.

There are many Asias within Asia
The most dominant observation is that there is no consistent profile for the Asia Pacific
traveller. Stark contrasts in behaviours, needs and preferences were observed across all
geographic and demographic lines. For example, while 66% of Chinese travellers
make most of their bookings on mobile, only 36% of Filipino travellers do so. Separately,
while 70% of Japanese travellers have never used a sharing economy app for trip
accommodation, 66% of Filipino travellers have, and almost half of all Indian travellers say they do so ‘often’ and ‘very often’. And
while 78% of Filipino travellers think it’s important to find service staff that speak a language they understand, only 4% of Hong
Kong travellers feel the same.
1The right content, through the right
channel, at the right time
In the world of travel, every engagement point matters. Beyond personalisation,
connecting with travellers in a timely and intuitive manner is equally important.
While the vast majority of Filipino travellers would be interested in
receiving travel recommendations from the moment they consider a trip all the
way up to while they are on the trip, travel players must consider carefully
how to connect with them and with what content. In the Philippines, 52% of
travellers prefer to receive updates and recommendations about their trip via e-
mail, while only 8% are happy to be contacted via phone call.
4
In the course of this research, “Journey of Me Insights: What Asia Pacific travellers want” uncovered four themes that travel providers need to focus on:
THE FOUR THEMES
The personalisation-privacy paradox
64% of Asia Pacific travellers would be willing to trade personal data for more
relevant offers and personalised experiences. In the Philippines, travellers are slightly more cautious, with only 61%
of them ‘somewhat’ or ‘very open’ to sharing their personal information. In
the face of rising privacy concerns, some boundaries must be maintained and at all times travel providers must respect
and protect personal data and the need for privacy. And above and beyond
adhering to legislation, travel players must be able to articulate ‘what’s the value?’ to get travellers to share their
data.
2Get real: Recommendations they
can trust
Rather than the glossy pictures of travel brochures or the carefully curated
Instagram feeds of celebrities, Asia Pacific travellers seek what’s genuine, and turn to their fellow travellers for inspiration.
The research found that friends, family & colleagues (word of mouth), traveller
reviews, online booking sites and social media have the largest influence on
Filipino travellers’ trip planning. Their social network and travel review sites
were likewise voted most likely to have sent them relevant recommendations
about travel.

_ Personalisation or privacy? 61% of Filipino travellers are open to sharing personal information with travel service providers in order to get more personalised services and offers. Across different age groups, Baby Boomers are the least open to sharing their data with travel service providers while Gen X travellers are the most open.
_ Big screens vs. small screens: Compared to the APAC average, Filipino travellers use mobile phones less for researching (54% vs. 49%) and booking (46% vs. 36%) trips.
_ Recommendations that matter: Cost saving is top of mind for Filipino travellers. Recommendations that help them save money are by far the travel recommendations that they find most useful (50% chose this versus 37% of the regional average).
_ Who knows better: Filipinos rely more on their social network for travel tips than any other market in APAC, with 67% saying they have received relevant recommendations from friends or family. They are also more likely than the average APAC traveller to rely on travel blogs/forums (49% vs. 34%). This points to a greater trust and reliance on peer or fellow traveller opinions than on travel providers. Interestingly, female travellers are more likely to feel they have received relevant travel recommendations from travel blogs or forums than male travellers (55% vs. 39%).
6
_ Opportunities to inspire: 37% of Filipino respondents do most of their travel planning during the weekends. Business travellers are far more likely to plan their travels while they are at work (39%) than leisure travellers (10%). Likewise, leisure travellers are more likely to plan their travels during the weekends (41%) than those who travel predominantly for work (27%).
_ The influencers: Friends, family and colleagues have the highest level of influence (1.6) on Filipino travellers when it comes to planning trips. This is significantly higher than the regional average (1.2). Filipino travellerse are however, less likely than the average APAC traveller to trust online booking or travel sites as a big source of influence. Curiously, Filipina female travellers are much less likely to be influenced by online booking or travel sites than their male counterparts (0.6 vs. 1.0).
_ New technology: For new technologies in travel, Filipino travellers show the greatest interest in a 360 degree interactive video that allows travellers to preview something they would see on their trip.

_ Reasons to stay connected: There are two top reasons for why Filipinos want to stay connected while they travel. Firstly, to share pictures and experiences with friends and family. Secondly, to access maps and location information. Female Filipina travellers show greater interest in sharing pictures and experiences from their trip than their male counterparts (69% vs. 57%).
_ How to get connected: Most Filipino travellers use Wi-Fi (81%) to stay connected when they are travelling abroad. The second most popular option for connectivity is local sim cards purchased at the destination (44%).
_ Apps that add value: 39% of Filipino respondents say they do not use any apps while travelling. Among those that do, Facebook, Google Maps and TripAdvisor are the top 3 mobile apps used by travellers from the Philippines.
7
_ A good time to ‘talk’: Filipinos are generally very open to receiving travel recommendations across the entire travel cycle. Interest is highest when they are first considering taking a trip (98%) and while they are evaluating travel options (96%).
_ “You can reach me via…”: e-mail. 52% of Filipino travellers prefer to receive updates and recommendations through e-mail. The second most favoured choice is social media (23%) and the least preferred channel are messaging services and apps (6%).

_ Speak my language: Local language offerings at the destination are important to Filipino travellers. 78% of them say it’s important to find service staff who speak a language they understand, 72% want tour guides who speak a language they understand, and 55% seek newspapers or TV programmes in a language they understand.
_ New world, new options: More than 65% of respondents seldom or have never used sharing economy apps and services, either for getting around (68%) or for accommodation during a trip (76%). Filipino travellers who use sharing economy apps primarily do so for convenience and ease of use.
_ Great expectations: Filipino travellers (11%) are less likely than the average APAC traveller (14%) to say a travel provider has never exceeded their expectations. They are more likely to have been impressed by hotels than other travel service providers. Baby Boomers are hardest to please, with 18% saying that a travel provider has never exceeded their expectations. In comparison, just 10% of Millennials and 5% of Gen X respondents say the same.
8
_ Travel stoppers: The large majority of Filipinos (78%) would be very unlikely or would not travel to a destination with a recent terror attack. This is significantly higher than regional average of 62%. Filipinos are also more likely to be affected by inclement or extreme weather. Female travellers tend to be more negatively impacted by adverse events than male travellers.
_ Safety updates: Filipinos show a much stronger reliance on embassy/government (59%), transport providers (59%), immigration/border security (48%) and their employers (30%) to share safety or security updates while travelling than the average APAC traveller.
