Digital Divide

Page 8: Amanda Henning. Social Networking: - The way the 21 st century communicates! -The grouping of individuals into specific groups made for people to gather.

Gender: mathematics, sciences, engineering & computer sciences, all traditionally male fields, are closely linked with computers and the internet . Girls are steered away from these fields as early as elementary school.

Race: Internet access at home-Hispanics-31.8%African Americans- 39.8%Whites-59.9%

Socio-economic: 25% of America’s poorest households are online, compared to 80% of homes earning more than $75,000 a year

Teacher Bias:

-Teachers must be advocates of technology in the classroom-Teachers must consider all aspects of diversity-Teachers should include unbiased forms of media and presentations in classroom activities-Teachers should bring technology to all students

Teacher bias means that different students are gaining different information from different teachers

Page 10: Amanda Henning. Social Networking: - The way the 21 st century communicates! -The grouping of individuals into specific groups made for people to gather.

Teachers with a high number of students on free and reduced lunch use technology for skills and drills practice while the same teachers with students from a higher socioeconomic class use technology to engage students in creative and critical thinking activities.

Teachers give boys more research/computer based projects.

Examples of teacher bias

Teacher Recommendations-Teachers should encourage women, people of color, people with disabilities, people for whom English is not a first language, and people from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds to value technology related fields as accessible and attractive educational and career options.

-Teachers should provide multiple opportunities in the classroom for students to have access to technology so that they may freely explore resources that they could not at home.

-Teachers need to control their personal bias against students

-Teachers should provide more opportunities for these students, not less. Every student can succeed given the correct and unbiased guidance of a mentor.

Using computers and the internet within the classroom can be very effective. Proper use must be taught to the students and all students must have equal opportunities to use the technology. Teachers need to overcome their natural bias towards certain groups in order to ensure every student is receiving the education they deserve.
