Relaxing next to the stereo on a balmy summer’s night, his songs take one back to an era when ballads reigned supreme. Growing up in Amanzimtoti, among other towns in South Africa, he got his first guitar when he was 13 and “just took to it”. In matric he participated in a national singing competition and came second. He then entered a competition in the United States and came sixth, something this humble artist took in his stride. A carefree, ordinary guy, there is more to Dinnie than meets the eye. Forone,heisalsothebasegui- tarist for one of South Africa’s most popular Indie-rock bands, Desmond & the Tutus. In 2012 the band’s second album — Mnusic — was released and the first three singles on the album charted on the 5FM Top 40 list, with the second single, Zim Zala Bim, reaching number one, and now they have done it again. Last week a song on Desmond & the Tutus’ latest album, Pretoria Girls, hit number one on the 5FM Top 40 list. The band have also received two Sama Award nominations in previous years. When asked about the fame of Desmond and the Tutus, Dinnie says: “One day we were just boys looking for fun surfing and the next ... who would have guessed.” He made his career formal by studying music in Pretoria and now teaches music part-time at St Albans Boys’ College in Pretoria. Author addresseschildren’s issues>> Enter now and win 20 ‘Sox Unplugged’ ebooks

TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

CHRIS Gillam started writing bookswhen his son Adam turned four.

He continued writing a series ofchildren’s books that address bullying, intimidation and solitude.

His latest publication, Sox Unplugged,is a story colouringin book which showsthat it is okay to be honest and expressone’s emotional issues.

Gillam was a severely physically andemotionally abused by his mother.

“I was the second eldest child, mymother was not interested in her childrenand I became my siblings’ parent by default,” Gillam says.

Gillam has since qualified as a

psychologist and is an eternal optimistwho is fascinated by human behaviourmodification.

Gillam, a diabetic, battled with hisweight for years, but over the past sixmonths has lost 71kgs.

“I have now written an eating planguide — Behind the Food. I tried diet afterdiet, prescribed by fat or overly skinnydieticians.

“I was on a mission and drove thousands of kilometres, until I met anutritionist at a boarding school in Potchefstroom. The diet adheres to SouthAfrican, Australian, British and Canadiannutritional standards,” he says.

Another project Gillam is working onis a book titled 24 Dates in 24 Days andit is based on his experience.

“I went on 24 dates in 24 days and itcost me R24 000 and on the 25the day,I met my wife.”

The book takes a comical look atInternet dating and the thingspeople do.

“Some people take theirchildren on a date and youhave to pay the bill,” Gillamsays.

Toddler feedingscheme growsTHISyearSolidarityHelpingHandwillenable more nursery schools to provide ahealthy meal to their toddlers every day.

Helping Hand fed more than 4 000toddlers across the country by means ofthe Lunchbox Project last year.

“Because the economic middleclass isunder increasing pressure, the demand forfeeding schemes at nursery schools isgrowing,” says Michelle Burger, project organiser.

“The schools that currently form partof the project receive a minimal or no statesubsidy and have to exempt many of theparents from paying school fees. Theschools simply do not have the necessaryfunds to provide essential nourishment tothe children. For many of these children themeal they get at school is their only mealfor the day,” she says.

Nursery schools that want to receivenutritionrelated support for toddlers in2015 can download the application formon Helping Hand’s website www.helpendehand.co.za Schools are evaluatedaccording to specific criteria and mustmeet certain requirements. — Supplied.

Law accordingto officerquestionedI WAS amazed and horrified to readthat a traffic officer, testifying for thedefence in the Burry Stander trial, said that it was “permitted for amotorist to turn over a solid line intoa street”.“Amotorist is allowed to turn over

a solid line to access land if there areno signs prohibiting the action. Abarrier line is a no-overtaking line,”said Superintendent Theodore SifisoNgcaku from the Hibiscus CoastMunicipality.Since when did become law, if so,

has it been Gazetted, is what I wantto know. This utterance explains some of

the lawlessness that takes place onour roads all the time.I think the municipality should

send that officer to traffic-law schoolso he can be taught just what the lawin this regard is, I do however, standcorrected if he is right. I was taughthowever, that it is illegal tocrossovera solid line. Am I correct or is he?

Recycling infrastructure discussed

TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

MAIN recycling organisations highlighteda number of recycling issues pertaining tothe public at a recent recycling workshop.

“We don’t currently have the infrastructuretosupportrecycling, andthegeneral feeling is that the municipality shoulddo it for us, but we have to start doingsomething ourselves,” Corinne Winsonfrom Toti Conservancy and a member ofKZN Recycling Forum says.

Winson says there are four concerns.“The first is utilisation of landfill sites.

People are unaware of where to take theirrecycled products. There is a DSW depotcentre in Seadoone Road, Doonside thatcan be utilised.”

Another concern is the abuse of theorangebag system.

“Contractors can see if someone in thearea abuses the system, the whole area isthen subsequently blacklisted by thosecontractors, ruining efforts made by thosewho are adhering to the system,” Winsonsays.

“Whenever there is a flood and the riverbreaks open, our lagoons are flooded withhundreds of plastic bottles, presumably

dumped next to the side of the road in areas surrounding the river. These are washedinto storm water drains, and end up in ourrivers and lagoons, and on the beaches.”

Education should also continue regarding reusing and upcycling.

“Upcycling is making new productsout of recycled materials, such as makingbags from old denims or turning an olddress into a top.”

The workshop was also aimed at entrepreneurs collecting waste for money.

“Entrepreneurs can make money bysorting through the waste before delivering to the collector. Currently collectorshave to pay workers to sort out the wasteand therefore pay less for waste deliveredto them. These are practical things thepublic can do to assist with the recyclingprocess,” Winson says.

Plastic bottles need to be separated, different colours separated, tops taken offand labels removed for recycling.

Crush glass bottles, flatten plastic bottles and cans and remove labels.

These are just a few things to get therecycling process going and save our environment.

For further information contactWinson on 031 811 6412 or 084 781 2019.

Nextgen ix35 Tucson revived for SA?

HYUNDAI will debut the thirdgeneration of itspopular compact SUV at the 2015 Geneva autoshow – the new Tucson.

The new SUV will make its South African debutat the 2015 Johannesburg International Motor Showin October. SA could however see the return of theTucson badge as Hyundai states “there’s a strongpossibility we’ll replace the ix35” nomenclature in2015.

Hyundai renamed its Tucson the ix35 locally in2010.

Designer Peter Schreyer said: “Design expressesour progressive spirit and passion, and it is transforming our brand. The Tucson has a bold and athletic

presence achieved through refined, flowing surfaces, bold proportions, sharp lines and most importantly,

our newest generation hexagonal grille – ourbrand signature. The front of the Tucson is

dominated by Hyundai’s signature hexagonal grille and new LEDs.

“Overall the design is sportier thantheoutgoingmodelwithassertiveflanks, redesigned rear bumper and slim rearLEDs.

The interior has been redesigned withsofttouch leathers, new materials, new centre

console and optional red leather trim. It’s equippedwith heatable and ventilated front seats, a poweredtailgate and auto park assist.

According to Hyundai: “The newgeneration satnav is more than three times faster than the previousversion fitted in other Hyundai models.”

In terms of safety, it’s equipped with an autonomous emergency braking system automatic brakingwhenever it detects an unsafe closing speed with aperson or vehicle ahead. Its active bonnet system raises the vehicle’s bonnet to cushion the impact shockin any frontal collision with a pedestrian or cyclist.

It also boast lanekeeping assist (corrects steeringto avoid unintended lane departure), rear traffic crossalert, blind spot detection, speedlimit reminder.
