The Region 15C tour-nament, annually one of the best attended amateur baseball tournaments in the state, will be held at Roscoe and Paynes-ville this year.

The day games will be played at Roscoe with the night games being at Paynes-ville. Roscoe has hosted the tournament in the past. For Paynesville, this year is a re-hearsal of sorts for next year when they will host the entire tournament.

Roscoe asked us to host the night games this year, said Dale Hess, former manager of the Paynesville Pirates. This will be a nice tune-up for next year.

Both diamonds have made improvements in the past few years. Roscoe, which hosted the 15C tournament in 2004, has made signifi cant improve-ments. While a new score-

board is the most noticeable, it is not the only one.

We put some new bleach-ers behind home plate, Dale Mackedanz said. We will be moving the old ones along the third base side.

A brick backstop and net-ting was placed behind the plate in the past few years. A new sprinkler system has kept the fi eld looking well, and on the fi eld, a new pitching mound has been built.

Paynesville is hosting the night games on the high school fi eld. That is where the Paynes-ville Pirates play their games. The Pirates also care for the facility in the summer months. The facility has had some ma-

jor upgrades in the past years.

The most obvious is an imposing grandstand plaza area.

There are two big pla-za areas behind home plate, Hess said. Under the grand-stand are storm shelters that hold batting cages and pitch-ing areas.

The other improvement included building mounds along the foul lines for addi-tional seating, allowing people to sit on the grass and watch a game.

We got a 40 percent FEMA grant to help us, Hess said. All together it cost over one million dollars.

The redesigned park includes clear sight lines. There is not a pole or struc-ture in the way of viewing from the grandstand area. Completely handicapped accessible, the grandstand also hosts a press box and concession areas.

Most of the viewing is above ground level. We will be placing a temporary fence along the right fi eld foul line, Hess said. We will have everything for concessions.

Hess came to the Pirates after playing with the Lake Henry Lakers. While with the Lakers, he learned to ap-preciate the crowds the Re-gion 15C can produce. He knows Paynesville will be ready for that crowd.

This school district feeds four amateur pro-grams, Hess said. It feeds Paynesville, Roscoe, Regal and Lake Henry. The base-ball tradition is strong here.

A new scoreboard now dominates the left fi eld at the Roscoe Rangers diamond. Roscoe will be hosting the daytime games of the 15C tournament.

Dale Hess recently worked on the grounds in front of the new grandstand at the Paynesville diamond. Paynesville will host the night games of the Region 15C tournament this year.

This school district feeds four amateur programs Paynesville, Roscoe, Regal and Lake Henry. The baseball tradition is strong here.

At times, the Elro-sa Saints played as if they were on a mission. The team won its fi rst 10 games of the SCL season, wrapping up a SCL-North playoff spot fairly early.

When talking of the Saints, the player that ev-eryone considers is Ethan Vogt. A dominating pitcher with a .47 ERA, he is a key component to the Saints offense.

Another key to the line-up is Cody Eichers, who along with fellow fi rst-year Saint, AJ Hadley, has fi t well into the Saints line-up. Kevin Kuefl er and

Most teams talk about the runs they have scored. Meire Grove has made a reputation by how many runs they dont give up. The team allowed only 33 runs in its fi rst 11 games. Only Lake Henry, Farm-ing and Spring Hill have scored more than three against them in SCL con-tests.

The pitching staff has a lot to do with that suc-cess. Matt Imdieke has had an incredible year, al-lowing six runs total in six games. Jacob Imdieke has also pitched well, keeping the ball in play for his de-fense.

Except for their 20-4 win over Farming, the

Matt Schmitz have also helped to make a minor change of the guard an easy task at Elrosa.

Vogt is an established pitcher, and this year the Saints have others to help with their mound duties. Austin Imdieke has picked up two wins and Brady Weller has also had qual-ity innings. Aaron Vogt is an effective reliever for the Saints.

During the regular season, the Saints have shown they could beat all comers. No one will con-sider them an easy team to beat in the post season.

    Elrosa Saints Meire Grove Grovers

Few batters have had much success against Elrosas Ethan Vogt this year. There have also been few pitchers who have stopped him from hitting.

AJ Hadley has established himself in the Elrosa offense and as the teams second baseman.

Grover offense has notalways produced neededruns, as refl ected in their 6-5 record through 11games.

Andrew Welle, Tan-ner Klaphake and Trev-or Sawyer are among the teams top hitters this year. They, and rest of the team, have developed a knackfor playing small ball. Theteam had 13 steals and 17 sacrifi ces in their fi rst 11games.

The small ball attack may not produce a lot of runs, but with a strong de-fense and good pitching, the Grovers have not need-ed a lot of runs to win ball games.

Kurt Marthaler and other Grovers have learned to makeeffective use of the small ball attack this year.

Spring Hill is a team that will hit and score runs. The bats wielded by Eric Terres, Austin Schoenberg, Eric Schoenberg, Shawn Schoenberg, Nate Terres and Jamie Terres, have more than once produced rallies and runs that win ball games.

Throw into the mix contributions from Lou-ie Opatz and Kyle Ber-tram and you have an of-fense that few teams have stopped from hitting or scoring. The team can pro-duce runs by hitting for power, with fi ve different

players having hit home runs. They can also man-ufacture runs with steals, singles and sacrifi ces.

The Chargers pitching staff usually does a good job of keeping opponents from getting away from them. Jordan Welle, Aus-tin Schoenberg and Opatz have all earned wins this year while pitching for Spring Hill.

Spring Hill has been about .500 all year in the SCL-North standings, but they have also shown they know what to do in order to win games.

Austin Schoenberg is not only a solid infi elder, he also pitches and is among the top hitters with the Chargers.

A .400 hitter and an excellent infi elder, Eric Terres is a reason the Chargers have held their own in the SCL-North.

While most teams have sought to fi nd a way to make the playoffs, Gre-enwald has struggled to fi nd a win. The team has not been able to muster enough runs.

Its offense does have the hard-hitting Jordan Prill, who homered twice for the team. Ryan Krae-mer has emerged as a steady batter and Brandon

    Worms has also hit regu-larly.

The team has hurt it-self at times with errors.Putting pressure on pitch-ers are Adam Ulbricht, Worms, Pete Lucken andNick Rademacher.

Greenwald has playedwell in some games, but sofar it has not been enoughto get them into the play-offs.

Jordan Prills hitting has helped bring runs to Greenwaldthis season.

Last year in the Re-gion 15C tournament, New Munich showed that it had young players ready to play in the SCL. Those players, mixed in with well-known veterans, have kept the SilverStreaks in the thick of the SCL-North standings.

Hunter Rademacher combines an ability to put the bat on the ball with speed for some exciting extra-base hits. Will Funk has emerged as a play-er to watch and is among the leaders in runs scored on the team. Those talents have blended in well with the experience of Chad

ing features someone very familiar along with Ty Rel-ler, who is becoming well respected. The two have shared most of the mound duties and both have been hard to score on. The Sil-verStreaks allowed 36 runs in their fi rst 10 games.

The Silverstreaks have learned to use the speed in their line-up to score runs, and the pitching and de-fense limit the runs they allow. As the regular sea-son ended and post-season play begins, that will be a good combination to have.

Ty Reller has emerged as a pitcher who can control a game for New Munich.

The Lakers put a team on the fi eld that combined the skills and experience of veterans as well as the raw talent of some young-er players.

There was a bit of a changing of the guard on the team, but they still re-mained a force in the SCL-South. Shane and Josh Kampsen are batters few teams have kept off base. They both hit over .400. Jason Kampsen and Ryan Wuertz have come through more often than not when the team needed an RBI.

Lake Henry LakersMatthew Quade is defi -nitely developing as onethe better young shortstops in the league.

Their pitching staff features Weston Brink-man, who has pitched over half of the Lakers innings.Jason Kampsen and JoshRoelike have also pitchedwell for the team.

The Lakers, while among the highest-scor-ing SCL teams, found thatwinning streaks were hard to come by, but they also ended a few teams win-ning streaks.

Aggressive base running by Josh Kampsen (left) andother members of the Lakers team have helped Lake Henry be a leader in runs scored in the SCL.

Chuck Schwieters has no problem recalling his best memory from the 1965 baseball season.

I hit a three-run home run in the fi fth of the state tournament, Schwieters said.

Actually, he was the fi rst SilverStreak to ever homer in a state tour-nament. The 1965 team became the fi rst Silver-Streaks team to reach the state playoffs.

Otto Thelen, who managed the team, re-members the game. He has no problem listing the starting line-up.

At third base was Dick Nathe and short-stop was Glen Klimmek, Thelen said. Eddie Toe-nies was at second base and Tony Massmann was at fi rst. In the outfi eld were Rube Nathe, Chuck Schwieters and Romie Sand. I started Ron Backes (drafted from Farming) as catcher, and Buddy Osten-dorf was at pitcher.

Something else Thel-en recalled about the state game is that it was the fi rst time New Munich played as the SilverStreaks.

Before the game a guy came from the Minne-sota Baseball Association and asked what our nick-name was, Thelen said. I said we didnt have one. He looked at me and said, You are getting a little gray. How about the Sil-verStreaks?

New Munich came to the state game with a good tandem of pitchers in Os-tendorf and Rueben Nathe who had helped New Mu-nich during the regular season and the SCL play-offs. The team also draft-ed Bob Schmitz from St. Martin and Lee Sand from Greenwald.

The 6-4 loss to Hals-tad in the fi rst round of state marked a memora-ble post season for the team. It was a post season they almost didnt have. The team came into the season with expectations of a good year, but knew the competition would be formidable in the Stearns County League.

Farming, Richmond, Lake Henry they were all good, Schwieters said. We struggled just to reach playoffs.

At the time, the SCL was an eight-team league. Four teams qualifi ed for playoffs. Schwieters had been with the team for about two years, but his association was longer than that.

I was the batboy with the team before I played, Schwieters said. After I joined, I sat on the bench

1965 SilverStreaks made a name at state

Members of the 1965 team that played at state were (from left, front) Batboy Bonnie LeClaire; (second row) Tony Massmann, Francis Hoppe, Romie Sand, Dick Nathe, Rich Hoppe, Dennis Roering, Chuck Schwieters,Kenny Steinhofer, and Rich Holdvogt; (back) Otto Thelen, Dave Schulzetenberg, Buddy Ostendorf, Ron Backes(drafted from Farming), Bob Schmitz (drafted from St. Martin), Lee Sand (drafted from Greenwald), EddieToenies, Glen Klimmek, Rube Nathe and Ron LeClaire.

    for about a year-and-a-half.

In 1965, he became a regular. The team had some talented players. Be-sides the state starting unit, the team had Ron LeClaire, the regular catcher, Dave Schulzetenberg, Rich Hol-dvogt, Ron Hoppe, Dennis Roering, Ken Steinhofer, Roman Sand and Francis Hoppe. The batboy was Bonnie LeClaire. The team had so many members that three extra uniforms had to be made before all could be suited up. Thelens wife, Fran, sewed those uniforms.

The 14-game regular season saw New Munich come into their fi nal game with a 7-6 record and only the slimmest of chances of reaching the SCL playoffs. They had to fi nish at 8-6 for any hope of making the playoffs.

For us to make the playoffs, we had to defeat Richmond and Lake Henry had to lose at Greenwald, Schwieters said.

As their fi nal inning came around, New Mu-nich trailed 8-1, setting up a fantastic rally.

Things started click-ing in the ninth inning, Schwieters said.

Buddy (Ostendorf) then hit one between fi rst and second. They fi elded it, but dropped the ball, Schwieters said. The win-ning run scored.

A few hours later, New Munich found out Lake Henry had lost its game and the two teams would have to playoff for the fourth seed.

Never count the Roy-als out of a game, or for that matter, out of the season. While the tough competition in the SCL-South meant the team was rarely above .500, they also kept other teams from being much better. A sol-id offense that does the basics correctly is built around Cole Schmitz and Scott Ruegemer. While the team does not have a lot of power, it still fi nds a way to score runs and stay in

    Richmond Royalsgames.

The pitching staff features the reliable Andy Bauer as its primary start-er. Adam Backes has won three games for the team and in recent weeks, Jor-dan Neu emerged as a good relief pitcher.

Richmond has been on both the winning and losing ends of close games this year. The Royals are a team few opponents can overlook and even fewer can put away easily.

As the regular season entered its fi nal weeks, Farming emerged as the fi rst-among-equals in the SCL-South

When Brad Mergen pitches, Farming has the ability to defeat almost any team. He kept batters off base with his strikeouts, and kept them off balance with controlled pitching. While the best known of the Flames pitching staff, he was not the only pitcher with the team. Aaron Nett, Nick Mergen and Chad Mergen have all had good innings for the Flames.

The offense, at times, has struggled to put runs

Farming Flamesacross the plate but they have gotten enough across home plate to win games. Nick Mergen, Tay-lor Fourre and Mitchell Thelen have mixed in well with the abilities and tal-ents of Brad Mergen, Nett and Craig Klein. While the team does not have a lot of power, it does have players who can get on and make their way around the bases.

The SCL-South has produced a season of surprises this year. The Flames showed all year long that they could pro-duce some of those sur-prises.

The Rangers, knowing they will host the Region 15C tournament, would like part of the bracket. First, the Rangers need to win enough games to qual-ify for the playoffs. Roscoe has the talent to do so. The team is young and most of them have started a rally at some point as the team played with its league op-ponents.

Jordan Schleper, Jor-dan Roos, Trent Gertken and Nick Dingmann are just a few of the players fans are getting used to

Roscoe Rangersseeing in a Ranger uni-form. Veterans, Chris Van-derbeek, Brent Heinen and Russ and RJ Leyendeck-er, have the experience to help lead the team.

Roos and Josh Mackedanz have become the Rangers pitchers fans are beginning to notice. Both have come through with wins over good teams this year.

The Rangers have had some tough losses, but they have also shown they are tough enough to win key games. A solid batter, Chris Vanderbeek is also a steady force in

    the Rangers defense.

In late April of 1990, Wes Schiffl er connected for a single at the Melrose High School baseball dia-mond.

While only a single, the hit was historic. The single was the fi rst hit by a member of the Melrose Black Sox baseball team. Then a new team in Cen-tral Minnesota, the Black Sox, which have since moved to Freeport, have one of best records of area teams in the last 25 years. Whether playing in the County Line League, Lakewood League or the Victory League, the Black Sox have always been a team no opponent can overlook.

The groundwork for that success was laid in the teams fi rst season when it fi nished 9-5 in the County Line League and reached the playoff championship before the season ended. As with a number of or-ganizations, it started with conversation.

When I moved to Melrose in September of

1989, I roomed with Steve Anderson and he men-tioned that his brother, Tim Yogi Anderson was moving back into the area, Craig Sawyer said. We all played college ball togeth-er and thought we should start a team in Melrose. Steve said there were some guys who werent playing for anybody and he felt we could put together a team. I didnt know many people from the area so he started calling and talking to peo-ple he knew might want to play.

Previously, Anderson, along with his brothers, Matthew and Tim, had played with New Munich.

In those years, New Munich was short on local players, so a fair number of Melrose High players began to fi ll up the roster over the early 80s, Ander-son said. By the later 80s, a core group of young-er New Munich boys Funks, Hoppes, Osten-dorfs and Sands became old enough to play and the dugout was getting pretty

    full. Steves phone calls

netted enough interest in playing with the Black Sox, despite the fact that many of the players could have played for established area teams. But, there was a certain attraction for most of them about play-ing in Melrose.

The idea of playing and representing your own town always has a strong appeal, Anderson said. It didnt take us long at all to have that sense that this is our team; most of us were from Melrose. All of us played together, wear-ing jerseys with Melrose scrawled across the chest. We felt at home, that this was where we belonged.

With the basis for a team established, they needed to fi nd a league. They were accepted into the County Line League. The league had an imme-diate natural rivalry with Sauk Centre. A call to Mel-rose High School helped them secure a home fi eld diamond. They also had

help from businesses and individuals with cash, time and material donations.

Gary and Diane Langer provided our uni-forms, Anderson said. The credit union gave a nice donation.

The core of the team was a combination of Mel-rose Area High School graduates and some being their college teammates who had moved into the area. Steve, Tim and Matt Anderson were proven players. Kyle Klasen, Bob Fink and Wes Schiffl er also brought good reputa-tions with them. There was also a youngster in high school named Chad Hess.

I caught the fi rst Black Sox, but Tim Ander-son was the full time guy and he was very good, Hess said. Steve Ander-son approached my fa-ther, Herb, wondering if I could play knowing I had three younger brothers. Of course, the answer was

Brothers Steve (left) and Tim Anderson were an effectivebattery combination for the Black Sox in the early years of the club.

The Steves consistent-ly played well during the year as they earned a play-off spot in the VL-South. No team overlooked them. They often played in close games with fi ve of their 13 regular season games being decided by two runs or less. Offensively, Ben Omann, Austin Guggen-berger, Jason Slivnik and Bo Schmitz could always be counted on to deliver hits and runs.

The Avon Lakers pretty much ruled the VL-South this year. The team did not lose a game to a di-vision opponent in the reg-ular season as it played at an 11-2 record and earned a Region 8C berth.

The Lakers pitching staff can shut down most teams. While Kyle Collins, 30.2ip 29k 3.52 ERA is the Lakers pitcher most think of, he is not their only solid moundsman. Ryan Morse, threw 17 innings and won four games. Jon-athan Harlander and Cody Stich both threw over 20 innings this year.

The defense played well behind them, rarely giving opponents extra chances to score.

    The Lakers offense,

    St. Stephen Steves

    Avon Lakers

The pitching staff, headed by the reliable andeffective Nick Krippner, helped keep games close.Besides Krippner, theteam also had successful outings from Andrew Stoltand Blake and Austin Gug-genberger.

The Steves talent pro-vided some exciting gamesand helped them earn athird-place fi nish in the VL-South regular season.

however, created a num-ber of chances to score and cashed in on them. Riley Voit developed into an excellent offensive threat, collecting over 20 hits and scoring 20 runs. Rick Hendrickson, the veteran lead-off batter, and Carter Holthaus both hit regular-ly. Hendrickson is also a threat to steal at any time in the game.

Adam Harlander, as well as Holthaus, Hen-drickson and Voit, all hit well with runners in scor-ing position.

The Lakers were guar-anteed a region berth be-cause of their regular sea-son fi nish. They could very well be playing in state this year.

The Express turned a corner of sorts this year, winning four regular sea-son games and qualifying for the VL-South playoffs. When the Express kept games close, they usually won. They also faced Free-port in tough games, fall-ing in two one-run games.

When people thought of the Express, they came to think of Derek Thielen fi rst. He was not only a sol-id hitter, but he had three of the teams regular season

Holdingford Expresswins and pitched almost half of their innings. Oth-er veterans who helped the team were Derek Biniek and Jeremy Springer. The team was also helped by newcomers such as Austin Gerads, who played well at third, and Nathan Brinker, who had a knack for get-ting on base.

The Express looked shaky at times on defense, but for the most part, were consistent in that part of the game also.

The Black Sox contin-ued to play good baseball. The offensive unit, featur-ing Carter Sawyer, Eric Eveslage and Ryan Tschi-da, continue to get on base ahead of the bats of Chad Hess, Troy Frieler and Grant Hess. Ike Sawyer and Seth Noll have proven they can get on and around the bases.

    The team brought

Mitch Reller and Car-ter Sawyer have emerged as the teams top pitchers. Both have shown they can control games. Backed by the teams defense and of-fense, they had fi ve wins this season.

Seth Nolls aggressive base running has helped Freeport manufacture runs.

The Saints fi nished their season on a high note, winning an extra-inning game at St. Stephen. The team played very good baseball at times and with John Pogatchnik, Lee Ma-ciej and Taylor Nitz in the line-up, had batters other teams respected. All three had at least 10 hits during the year.

Upsala is a team that can usually be counted on to score runs. With hit-ters like Brady Burggraff, Brandon Welinski, Brock Cichon and Adam Gerads in the line-up, the team can usually count on getting hits. Justin Lampert and Matt Swanson often made hits while men were on base.

As the defending Class C champions, So-bieski was the team every-one wanted to defeat. In the Victory League West, only one team (Nisswa) did.

The Skis earned a spot in the Region 8C tour-nament by winning the VL-West. The team has a good pitching staff led by Tyler Jendro. Cole Jendro and Josh Wenzel also have

The team played ad-equate defense behind its pitchers, usually sending Ryan Blommer, Pogatch-nik, Kyle Jarnot or Calvin Becker to the mound.

While they fi nished with a 3-10 record in the VL-South, the Saints were often competitive. Five of the losses were by three runs or less.

The teams pitching is anchored by veterans JohnFuchs and Matt Swanson. Those two combined tostrike out almost 60 battersthis year.

The Blue Jays, at times, simply pounded outvictories, but also have the patience to win closegames.

earned wins for the team.Offensively, Scott Li-

tchy has fi t in well with a roster that includes Col-lin Ekman, Riley Hirsch, Jonathan Czech and Joey Hanowski. The Skis out-scored their opponents by 60 runs in the regular sea-son.

The season is not over yet for the Skis and there are still opponents who want to face them.

Joey Hanowski is just one of the Sobieski Skis who consistently hits well.

Shortstop Lee Maciejs defense and offense helps the Saints during the season.

A steady, dependable pitcher, John Fuchs also hits well for the Upsala Blue Jays.UPSALA BLUE JAYS

The Cubs fi nished their regular season with a winning record and can compete with teams in their division

In Kyle Peterschick and Kyle Boser, they have above average pitchers. Offensively, the team has solid hitters in Dusty Park-er and Ed Wenzel. Peter

Flensburg was able to score runs this year. With AJ Jenks, Isaac Thoma, Justin Jenks, Lucas Thoma and Josh Genske in the line-up, the Falcons had batters who got on base.

The team did put it together for a 10-3 upset

Opole played some of its best baseball against its division opponents. How-ever, those efforts didnt always translate into wins.

Jake Nelson emerged as the teams primary pitcher, but Max Posch and Sam Butler also pitched regularly.

Randall Cubs Flensburg Falcons Opole BearsHerman and Rick Drew provide the hits to drive in runs. Alec Zach and Jere-my Klein also had some big hits for the team this year.

The Cubs were rare-ly out of any game, and showed they can play in and won with some close contests.

over Randall late in the year, but generally they did not always score enough to win, and missed the VL-West playoffs.

Luke Thoma did the bulk of the pitching and earned both wins for Fal-cons.

Tim Huls, Zack Bialkaand John Pilarski regular-ly got on base for Opole, but the team found it hard to get hits with runners on base.

The team did have three wins, which wasenough to get them intothe VL-West playoffs.

Black Sox continued from page 9__________________________________________________________________

a yes from dad and me. He picked me up almost weekly for games.

Tim was gone that weekend, so 16-year-old sophomore Chad Hess caught for us, said Steve Anderson. He wasnt even on varsity at the time but he did a fantastic job catching.

Erickson started and struck out 10 in the fi rst fi ve innings. Steve Ander-son pitched three innings and Klasen fi nished the game.

Besides Schiffl ers single being the fi rst hit, the Black Sox also had their fi rst home run that game. Being a hit by an Anderson was not a sur-prise, just who hit the ball was.

I hit the fi rst home run for the Sox with a run shot in the seventh, Steve Anderson said.

For the most part, however, it was Tim An-derson and Craig Sawyer who provided the teams power. With those two hit-

ting behind a number of players who consistently reached base, the Black Sox scored runs. With a strong defense and solid pitching, those runs often resulted in game-winning leads.

Others were not known well to local fans, but would soon leave their mark. Sawyer; who had played with the Andersons at Concordia in Moor-head, and Dave Erickson; who had moved into the area from Jordan, brought a reputation as fi ne pitch-ers from that team. There was also Todd Dingmann, Duane Duevel, Dean Elf-ering, Pete Grove, Glen Middendorf and Pat Schad.

I was a little hesitant about joining, said Schad. Baseball wasnt always my fi rst sport (as far as passion) so I had some hesitation joining a bunch of guys who had been around it their whole lives. From the start the team was a good team.

    The Black Sox won

Among the players with the club in the early years were (front, from left) Tim Anderson, Todd Kuzma, Jamie Hemker, Osvaldo Carbajal, Chris Grove, Kurt Langer, ScottPicha and Nathan Hess; (back) Craig Sawyer, Steve Anderson, Matt Anderson, Chad Hess, Kyle Klassen, Mark Sannes, Todd Dingmann, Pete Grove and Ryan Spanier.

AMAT EU R BASEBALL - VICTORY LEAGUE

their fi rst game, and then went on to become a force in the County Line League. From the onset, there was sense of being a team with that group.

Pete Grove was from Grey Eagle and I was from Wheaton but had set up business in Melrose and Dave Erickson was good friends with Bob Fink, Sawyer said. Otherwise everybody else had gradu-ated from Melrose or was going to school in Mel-rose. This made it very easy to attract players to the team.

Over the years, the team began to resemble other amateur teams in the area. Family connections became common.

We were like any other amateur team as it was based on fami-ly and friends. A lot of brothers such as Ander-sons, Sawyers, Hesses, Spaniers, Groves, Mey-ers, Berscheits, with fi rst cousins Tschidas, and the father-son Mettenburg

combination, said Hess. Then mix in Klasen, Langer and brother-in-law Terwey, Kemper, Hemker, Dingmann, Eveslage cous-ins and Klaphake.

Those names have all contributed to a success-ful tradition. From the fi rst year, the Black Sox not only did well in the County Line League, but also played and competed very well against the Cold Spring Springers and other Class B teams in the area.

We beat a power-ful 18-1 St. Cloud Beau-dreaus team 13-6 in a game at Putz Field, An-derson said. We scored eight runs in the top of the fi rst inning. I think our fi rst seven guys had hits. We just fl at out had a good game and beat them. The next day in the St. Cloud Times it said that they made six errors and gave up 12 unearned runs. That was the excuse. Why else would they lose to Mel-rose?

    The team was partic-

ularly strong in pitching. Steve Anderson proved himself in high school, college and amateur. Er-ickson was equally as im-pressive.

Not all games were decided by pitching. Mel-rose and Sauk Centre had some quality contests that year. Sauk Centre ended up edging Melrose in the playoffs. Contests with the formidable Regal Eagles were anticipated games. For one game, the Black Sox took the win in dra-matic fashion.

Tim hit two home runs that day one in the bottom of the ninth with one out to tie up the game and send us to ex-tra innings. Craig Sawyer knocked in the winning run in the 11th, Anderson said.

If there was a bit of a drawback to the season, it was that the Black Sox home diamond was also the high school diamond. While the diamond itself was a good place to play,

being on a high school fi eld did not lend itself tothe typical amateur expe-rience. There was no real place for concession sales, and the fi eld was built for high school games.

They have made sev-eral improvements sincewe played, but it is better to have your own diamond for amateur programs. I actually enjoyed playing at other diamonds because they were in better shape,Sawyer said.

Over the years, the Black Sox would makedifferent diamonds theirhome diamond, and have now moved to Freeport. They have played in dif-ferent leagues and regionsand made the trip to statein 1991, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2011. They have created a leg-acy of strong teams, good baseball and a winning tra-dition.

A tradition that wasstarted 25 years ago.
