It’s Thursday afternoon and Erinn Valencich is reviewing new
furniture designs in her showroom on LA’s famed Robertson
Blvd. She’s already been at work for hours on a variety of
projects from a yoga pavilion in Malibu to a home lounge in
Northern LA.
Erinn enjoys pushing boundaries — from the type of project
she accepts to the spaces that she inspires. Known for her
elegant modern style, she has an eye for blending elements to
create warm, eclectic environments.
She approaches each project by asking her clients to review
a series of rooms to help determine specifi c likes and dislikes.
“I always start by going through a binder of images with my
clients and asking them to point out what they like. That starts
to paint a picture for both of us. It’s very broad stroke — it’s all
about fi nding things you love and using them as inspiration.”
said Valencich.
Approaching a project of your own? Erinn suggests the
same fi rst step for you. Use websites, magazines, and design
books to search for your particular likes and dislikes. Ask
yourself what it is about the room that appeals to you. It
can be broad inspiration — like selecting images with rich
dark walls. Or something more specifi c like the way rugs
are layered on a fl oor. Erinn recommends taking this key
inspiration and building on it as you move forward with
restyling your room.

With your inspiration in mind, think color. Erinn always
selects her fabrics and wallpapers fi rst and uses them
to develop her palette for the room. “Keep in mind that
fabric selection is generally dictated by what’s available
in the marketplace — choose them fi rst. Paint shades
are endless, so you have a lot more fl exibility to mix and
match,” said Valencich.
Contrast is important to defi ne and separate the
elements in the room. “As I layer furniture and objects into
a room I always think of contrast. So if you have a mid-
tone fl oor you would want to layer in a lighter rug and a
darker sofa. The same with the walls — dark walls, dark
curtains and a dark fl oor can become a dark box. Select
colors and shades that separate elements.” said Valencich.
Finishes should be varied as well. Contrast a variety of
surfaces and materials throughout the room to create
visual interest.
Erinn recommends selecting your fl oor using the same
process as you would for the room. Start with inspiration.

take a good look at the fl oor color. That helps narrow the
selection before you go into the store to look at samples.
You may be interested in grey or you may really want a
dark fl oor. But choosing some color directions will give
you a starting point,” said Valencich.
Once you’ve determined a direction for color, select
a texture. Rustic, sculpted and wire-brushed textures in
wider plank styles are extremely popular with today’s
interior design trends. And of course smooth surfaces are
still a classic. There are a lot of options on the market,
so take your time and browse. This guide will help you
categorize colors and your salesperson can help in store
with samples and the decision process. Don’t be afraid
to ask questions, and always take several samples home
to visualize in the space with the colors and textures you
plan on using in the new room.
