Editor Virginia J/lagazinc of J-fistOlJ' a1ld Biof{rapll)' :

I herewith hand to you a list of names of soldiers who served

in the Revolutionary Vvar from Virginia. The list is incomplete. It was made with a view to gather the available information inregard to the militia soldiers fr0111Augusta county, but in thecourse of the investigation I gathered some data in regard tosoldiers from other counties. The rank of the soldier is givenwhere I was able to obtain it. The counties from which thcycame (other than Augusta) are in lI10st instances noted. Where

thc party was known to be a private I marked this filct, by putting the letter" P" at the end of his name. Most of these are,I bclieve, militia men, but some of them are not. With the in

formation at hand I all1 not able to determine this fact accurately. On the 18th of March, I81S, Congress passed an act making

provision for placing upon the pension roll all commissionedofficers, non-commissioned officers, musicians, and private soldiers, and all officers in the hospital and medical stan~ who servedin the war of the revolution. In Jnne, 1832, Louis Cass, Secretary of \lVar, wrote a letter (dated June IS, 1832) to HonorableSamucl A. Foote, Chairman of the Committee on Pensions in

the senate, in which he says" there are no rolls of the militia inthis (war) department, except those of the State of Newhampshire." This was written in reference to the act of Congress

,:.. passed June 7th, 1832, entitled" An act supplcmentary to an

-, " aCLfocthe_relieCoCthe_sut~vivi!lg_officers,_ancI soklie~QCthe_, revolution," the parties provided for by this act, embraced four

\ . general classes. I. The regular troops. 2. The State troops, militia,' and volunteers. 3. Persons employed in the naval ser-/ vice. 4. Indian spies. In order to supply the information in: ; regard to theii- services by which a test could be made, of theI,
