From fantasy to reality
Authentic capture of longitudinal care
Longitudinal care
“…it's such a limited time frame... you've movedon to a totally different area geographically and mentally”
Longitudinal care
Longitudinal care
Longitudinal care
“You've got so many different commitments at medical school so it would allow you to follow the patient from afar…”
Do you see a role for technology in helping
you learn about one patient's experience?
“Yes...several different virtual patients......same condition ... different presentation”
“You could see if there is anyone in the family... is one member's ill health affecting other family members in some way?”
Would it be useful, contrasting patients?
“The patient's signs... this is what I heard... click on this... crackles”
“Questions and answers... instantaneous ones so that as soon as you click you know the answer straight away.”
Any changes or additions that you think would be important?
Conclusions
• Longitudinal care is an important part of medical practice• Medical education currently provides students with
clinical snapshots• Our pilot VLE allowed students to gain experience of
longitudinal care and begin to understand some of the complexities
