Picnic at Tom and Joanne Blanck’s By Carolyn Simpson

On June 15 we met at McDonalds in the Tates Creek Center to tour on our way to the picnic at Tom and Joanne’s. What a perfect day we had to enjoy good food and wonderful fellowship with our fellow car club members.

Tom had put this particular tour together a couple of years ago so Charlie and I used his tour. It was a very pleasant drive and we were on a couple of roads that were new to us. Along the way, we saw beautiful horse farms and mansions. When we arrived at Tom and Joanne’s, I think everyone was ready to eat. We had 43 attend and, as you can imagine, we had a lot of good food. Boy what a great picnic. Thanks again to Joanne and Tom Blanck. What terrific hosts. Thanks all around to everyone that brought something to share. I do not know about you, but I know I gain weight as a result of the good food. A good time was had by all. It was great to see everyone. I didn't take a count because I was to busy eating and talking. I believe there were approximately 40+ members present. I can't wait until next year's picnic. Thanks to Charlie Simpson for leading the tour prior to the picnic.

Our next event is the Concours d'Elegance 20 July. A few of us meet at the back track kitchen for 7:30AM breakfast. After breakfast we head out to setup our cars. As in year's past we have the front row by gate. Watch for our Club AACA banner. The cost will be $20 ($15 to get in and $5 to park where we do). Also check Carolyn Simpson's article on the ladies lunch for Saturday the 20th.

Please keep our ailing club members and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

See you on the road. If the top is up or down it does not matter as long as we are out touring with friends. Come along and enjoy our tours. Renew “old” friendships and make new ones.

AH-OOO-GAH GARAGE Reprint HAGERTY CLASSIC CARS Magazine Winter 2012 By Wayne Carini from the TV Show Chasing Classic Cars When you're in the business and restore cars for a living, you look for something special that you can't make. And you can't manufacture originality. It's kind of intriguing if you think about it. Dad found that out the hard way with his favorite car - a totally original Ford Model A. The paint was thin on the fenders and he made the mistake of painting them. He used to say, "There's nothing we can't do." But this is something we can't do. We can't make a car original again, no matter how hard we try during the restoration process. Maybe that's why so many top restorers covet original cars when they're spending their own dollars. When I was growing up there were so many cars that were in such great condition that we would never have restored today. But everyone wanted a car that looked new. We were taking great cars and replacing this beautiful worn leather and stripping original paint. If you paint a fine piece of furniture, you're defacing something that's perfect the way it is, but for a long time it was different with cars. Or maybe it was the generation. Deprived of shiny new cars when they were growing up, people raised during the depression didn't want worn and faded old cars. When Pebble Beach began to accepted original cars, the trend toward preservation gained momentum. In fact, to some degree, the unrestored car movement has turned the collector car industry upside down. Original cars are real treasures and I hope that they all end up in the hands of

people who cherish them, not in the hands of people who restore them. Pretty soon significant collections will have fine unrestored cars from every decade to accompany the obligatory Ferrari 275 GTB, Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, Duesenberg Model J and Porsche Speedster. Personally, I think you can get a lot more enjoyment out of original cars. It's exciting to talk about and share the history of an automobile. The condition of a car tells a story. If pristine, you can picture it in a carriage house being wiped off by a chauffeur every day. Like my Hudson Italia. Cherished by its former owner, it was parked on carpet and covered in layers of sheets. Not everyone gets it. They say, "Who would want to drive in that?" or, "Oh, I might get dirty." But Europeans understand and they caught on a lot earlier. They love their cars for different reasons. Cars are more of a social thing in Europe. People take old cars to each other's houses for dinner, particularly the Brits. They've always used old cars. They don't care if they are a little dirty and have a stone chip or two. Unrestored cars will be more and more accepted as people understand them. No matter why they accept them, it's the new future of the automobile hobby, and some day soon we'll see a totally original car win Pebble Beach.

AH-OOO-GHA’S THE CAR IS THE STAR By Jack Garabedian

Jack and Jeannine’s 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe 2 door Town Sedan. People ask me “where did you find it?” I tell them it found me. Back in October 2012, I setup as a vender at the Boonesborough, KY car show. I wanted to park my 1971 MGB-GT (the 1971 MGB-GT is a story on its own) next to me in the vender’s row but the staff said only if I was selling it. So I put a FOR SALE and or trade sign on it just to have it next to me. A guy by the name of Larry, from Mt. Washington, KY, asked if I would be interested in trading for a 1940 Chevy in museum condition, which meant all original inside and out (except for the 1935 or 1937 carburetor).

I said I do not know what a 1940 Chevy even looks like. Larry had owned the car for ten years and prior to that it was at the Brown Hotel (Louisville, KY) in a private museum for ten years and that’s all the history that is known on the car so we traded. It has a 113” wheelbase, 181” from front of grille to rear of body. With a straight 216 cubic inch 85 H.P. valve-in-head 6-cylinder engine and a vacuum-assisted steering column 3-speed gearshift, optional in 1939, was made standard in 1940. This was the last year Chevrolet, as well as many other automakers, had the external running boards. The car runs and drives smoothly. The black color gives it a “gangster” look. So Jeannine searched Google and found a notorious 19th century female criminal by the name of Bertha Heyman AKA: Big Bertha so now she calls the car Big Bertha, I call it fun.
