Report by the Committee on Certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
At its business meeting in February 1991, the Committeeon Certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry electedthe following officers, who began their terms on January 1,1992: Dr. Theodore Shapiro, Chair; Dr. Thomas M. Haizlip,Vice-Chair; Dr. Lois T. Flaherty, Secretary-Treasurer. Dr.Elizabeth Weller was elected to a 6-year term, effectiveJanuary 1, 1993, to succeed Dr. William H. Sack, whocompletes his 6-year term on the Committee on December31, 1992.
Members of the Committee are elected to serve one 6year term and are not eligible for reelection. The membersof the 1992 Committee are Dr. Walter R. Anyan, Jr. (representative for the American Board of Pediatrics,term expires December 31, 1994), Dr. Mark 1. Blotcky (termexpires December 31, 1997), Dr. Lois T. Flaherty (term expiresDecember 31, 1993), Dr. Thomas M. Haizlip (term expires December 31,1995), Dr. Kenneth S. Robson (term expires December 31, 1994), Dr. William H. Sack (term expires December 31,1992), and Dr. Theodore Shapiro (term expires December 31,1993).
Examination
At its September 20 to 22, 1991, examination in Baltimore,the Committee examined 342 candidates; 205 (60%) passed, 58(18%) conditioned, and 79 (22%) failed or failed must reapply.(See Table 1.) The 1992 examination will be held September 11to 13, 1992, in Chicago. The 1993 examination will be heldSeptember 10 to 12, 1993, in Raleigh-Durham, NC. Applicationsare due by the 1st of May preceding the examination and areavailable from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology,Inc., 500 Lake Cook Rd., Suite 335, Deerfield, IL 60015.
The current fees for examination are as follows: applicationfee, $300; oral examination fee, $600; oral reexamination fee(condition), $400; oral reexamination fee (failure), $600; andwritten examination or reexamination fee, $300.
Applicants are required to submit copies of current licenseregistrations showing expiration date with their applications in

addition to documentation of all training. Training documentsmust include the exact dates of training. All licensing and trainingrequirements must be met before applying for examination.
Committee Decisions and Items of Interest
1. The Committee is exploring formats for the recertificationexamination.
2. The Committee continues to arrange examinations following the weekend format. This format has been well received bythe host facilities and an overwhelming majority of candidatesand examiners.
3. The Committee continues to note difficulties with certificates issued to residents. If child psychiatry training is doneduring general residency, it must be designated as such.

In the article, "The Mania Rating Scale: Can It Be Used in Children? A Preliminary Report,"by Mary A. Fristad et al., published in the March 1992 issue of the Journal (31 :252-257), inthe Appendix, item number 7 should include "4. Incoherent; communication impossible."
