From the artistic Director

Welcome to AmericAn BuffAlo, the fourth of DaviD mamet’s plays produced at the Geffen Playhouse.

American Buffalo launched David onto the national stage when it premiered 38 years ago in chicago. exploding onto the american consciousness in the mid-1970s, the play was hailed for its gritty exploration of the american dream through the eyes of the socially marginalized misfits at its center. fueled by the raw intensity of its language — a profane, sometimes hilarious and oddly eloquent poetry of the street — the play was received as an anthem to the ruthlessness of american capitalism and the uneasy relationship between friendship and business.

re-visiting American Buffalo a generation later, we might marvel at how the world has changed since 1975. Yet we find ourselves in the wake of a different financial crisis and an ever-expanding wealth gap. With the middle class dwindling, the american dream can seem more a pipe dream than a possibility. and are there costs to pursuing this dream? and is anyone left behind?

With this fine cast and artful design team, i am pleased to bring to life once again these denizens of Don’s resale shop. coarse, profane and unpredictable as they are, their humanity is unmistakable and recognizable in us all.

enjoy.

a Writer kNoWN for straiGhtforWarD brevitY Gives us just that…

Amy Levinson: american buffalo has this uncanny aspect to it wherein it is both completely a play of its time and place and incredibly timely. can you talk a bit about the spark that led you to write it and how you see these characters now?

David Mamet: i used to spend a lot of time with hustlers and thieves. A play set among them is, like a play set among the super-rich, in politics, or among kings and Queens, or in oZ, a device which lets us participate fully. it means, “once upon a time.”

AL: i have heard some say that they put you on a trajectory of writers that reads: Beckett—Pinter—mamet—laBute. the idea being that each writer has built upon the specific writers that came before him. Do you think there is validity to this?

DM: there is validity to a whole raft of things.

AL: whom of your contemporaries inspires you? what is the work you find most exciting?

DM: i adore Doubt. i loved joe Gatins’s script for flight, and anderson and coppola’s moonrise kingdom.

AL: when you begin work on a play or a film does the idea always come to you in a similar way; do you think of a character, some dialogue, a setting and go from there? And once the idea sets in, what are the first steps you take to make it come to life?

DM: None of your goddamned business.

AL: As a playwright, screenwriter and episodic writer, how do you know in which medium an idea belongs?

DM: i can’t even figure out how to correctly arrange the silverware. and i have a compartmented drawer for that.

classics eNDure. Not oNlY must theY simPlY survive the passage of time to earn this distinction but they must also journey through this exposure to multiple generations based on a universality that resonates across cultural differences and evolving ideas. Given this set of enigmatic criteria, it is impossible for a writer to ‘set out’ to write a classic. rather, it evolves organically — it is simply a truth told — by chekhov, by Williams, by miller — that cannot be denied even as decades pass. there are more examples than one can possibly name, but take hedda Gabler’s inability to reconcile her past with her present or brick’s (cat on a hot tin roof) unwillingness to accept himself, and therefore others, on their own terms. miller did this time and again with characters who did the wrong things for the right reasons — a truly human way to behave. a classic, most of all, requires the examination of a large idea whose universal themes are timeless and appeal to our collective sense of humanity.

so how does American Buffalo, a play so quintessentially american that the very word is in the title, endure through 2013? American Buffalo tackles the subjects of class, race and the haves vs. the have-nots. it is a play that gives a picture of the 99% seeking, without scruples, a way to get to the 1%. and while that is a relatively new nomenclature for the ongoing class struggle in america, it sums up what mamet was illuminating when he created the characters of Don, bobby and teach.

in 1975 the national outlook was defined by unrest. the vietnam War had polarized and devastated the country. in 1967 the Democratic National convention caused people to take to the streets in protest. When protesting turned violent it lead to the 1969 trial of the chicago seven — those accused of inciting riots during the DNc. While finally acquitted after a four and a half month trial, these protestors, including some of the most famous liberal voices in america, argued that the voice of the socioeconomic underdog had to be heard.

this social and political context helps highlight and crystallize the ideas in mamet’s plays. the underdogs, as it were, are his subjects and the story is told from their underground: in this case, a junk shop that is verging on claustrophobic. the worlds of mamet’s plays, Glengarry Glen

ross, Speed-the-Plow and American Buffalo, are populated by characters willing to trade in personal loyalty for perceived success. the endgame is the promise of big financial gain with humanity losing in this zero-sum philosophy.

it can be difficult to mine the humanity in mamet’s plays. it requires an audience’s ability to wade through profanity, seedy settings and an uncomfortable male aggression that permeates much of his work. at times characters seem to talk solely for the purpose of hearing their own voices — but it only appears that way. mamet uses every word of dialogue

to establish a character and then build their case. With Don, bobby and teach, the three onstage characters in American Buffalo (there are key people to the story who never make an appearance), each man is trying to position himself to reap the benefits of a low-rent heist. unfortunately, their suspicions about one another, coupled with their tendencies to tell half-truths, makes a heist unlikely and cohesion among thieves impossible.

mamet is the master of economy in language and through his urban poetry we learn who these men are. the casual disdain that teach shows for minorities, the confusion and naiveté bobby exudes and Don, who still believes in people enough to never

know who is honest and who is playing him, is all conveyed through the language of the poorer class.

these carefully crafted characters are a joy to stage for actors and directors alike. there is an enormous amount of underbelly information to mine from the rich, layered language that mamet employs. in speaking about the rehearsal process, director randall arney talks about the great time that has been had creating this production. “in their raw imperfection, these characters embody something profoundly human. as much as they fight it, they cannot turn their backs on one another. but they can also behave like complete idiots, and that makes them truly fun to play.”

While it may seem lamentable that this play remains so timely, we must take the good with the bad. it is true that money can define us, drive us, and be our undoing. but that universal truth does not give this play its ‘classic’ status. instead it is the fundamental idea that rich, poor, or anywhere in between, humanity is our tie that binds.

join the Prime minister and an always hilarious cast of characters, ranging from the scheming cabinet secretary, the morally confused Principal Private secretary and the beautiful but ruthless head of the Pm’s Policy unit as they lurch from crisis to crisis, trying to survive a disastrous weekend that teeters on the edge of catastrophe despite their best (and worst) intentions. Will they manage to save the euro from collapsing, resolve the energy crisis, solve the debt crisis, hide an embarrassing illegal immigrant, control the media and avoid public humiliation? brits and Yanks alike can bank on the laughs in the american premiere of this uproarious satire fresh from an acclaimed West end run.

august strindberg’s classic about sex, greed and manipulation is adapted by the modern master of such tantalizing topics: Neil labute. the scandalous turn of the century drama, banned in britain for nearly fifty years after its publication, chronicles the night-long flirtation and seduction between the wealthy lady of the house and one of her father’s household employees. set on long island just before the 1929 stock market crash and featuring one of theater’s most commanding female characters, this world premiere adaptation couples provocateurs strindberg and labute who capture the timeless consequences of passion and power.AUDREY SkiRbAll kENiS ThEATER AT ThE gEffEN plAYhoUSE

judy Gold has always dreamt big. maybe because she is big (and by that, we mean tall). this six-foot, three-inch jewish mother of two is bringing her critically acclaimed off-broadway hit to la. a nonstop 90-minute ride, the Judy Show is Gold’s chance to broadcast her hilarious life story through the sitcoms we all knew and loved. as an awkward kid growing up in New jersey, Gold has fantasies of running away to the Brady Bunch house or climbing aboard the the Partridge family bus, all while unabashedly recounting the mix of riotous, touching and otherwise embarrassing moments that taught her the facts of life. infused with pop-culture references as well as her signature irreverent humor, the Judy Show covers life, love, showbiz and ultimately her quest for her very own show — all in a way that might make rhoda proud.
