The Middle Colonies

Back then, New York was New Netherlands New York was a Dutch Colony The Dutch were there for trade, they traded beaver fur

for lots of money. William Penn started Pennsylvania for Quakers For Quakers, all people were treated equally and there

was no church. Quakers were pacifist; which means they don’t fight. The Quakers negotiated with the Indians. Manhattan was traded by the Indians for a box of beads.

The New England Colonies Ninety-nine percent of the people were puritans They started the New England Colonies for religious freedom Puritans believed that there was no difference between government and

religion Puritans had no tolerance for other religions Women were not allowed to preach, if they did they would be banished. Public humiliation was used as punishment In Salem, two girls went around accusing people of being witches The Pilgrims were the first in the New England colonies. The Pilgrims meant to land in Jamestown but landed in Massachusetts The Pilgrims met Squanto the Indian in Massachusetts Lots of pilgrims came to America sick and lots of them died.

The Southern Colonies People came to the Southern Colonies; the first colony was

Roanoke. People came for religious freedom People in Roanoke ran out of supplies and sent Richard White

back to Europe to get more. After being arrested Richard White came back to Roanoke and

everyone was missing Other Southern colonies were Maryland, Virginia, North

Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia In the Southern Colonies they grew Cash Crops like Indigo and

Tobacco Everyone in the family helped in farming, except babies who were

placed in a tree hammock Charleston, South Carolina, became the leading port and

trading center of the South

Todays Clothing Colonial ClothingToday's clothing is better made, and a lot

more expensive. We have name brands and they are made mostly out of cotton

fabric. We buy our clothes from big stores like the mall. We get more than

one pairs of shoes within a year. Today’s clothing is a lot better from

what it was back then.

Colonial time clothing was made from mostly whatever they could find, and they didn’t

get new pairs every week. The shoes were expensive, and they only had one pair for a long period of time, maybe a

few years. they all had different ways of dressing depending on what “class” they were in. Poor people wore stuff kind of

like cloth. Middle class wore good clothes, but it wasn’t well made all the time. Rich people wore stockings and

had nice shoes, and just had nice jewelry or something that represents that they

had money.

Food Then and Now We have drive

throughs. We have very greasy,

fried, unhealthy food, But some is healthy.

We can go to stores to buy our food.

Not everyone works for their food.

They hunt everyday for there food.

They cooked it outside. It was mostly whatever

they could find. They also grew their

food; Farms and crop fields.

In colonial times, the jobs they had were not In colonial times, the jobs they had were not always the best. Some people farmed, some always the best. Today's jobs

Today's jobs are a lot better. They pay more and you don’t have to start working right when you are able

to understand how to walk, speak and use your hands. We are able to choose what we want to be, not what our parents or “class” of what we are born

in tell us what to be.

Housing today, Housing then

Today's housing is a lot more sturdy, its not weak and is strong against fast winds and hurricanes. We buy

our houses and don’t move constantly, most

people don’t. Our houses are made out of wood,

cement, etc.

Colonial houses weren't always sturdy, depending on if you

were rich or not. The Indians had houses that

were built out of branches, and straw. They could stay

up against hurricanes or strong winds. They moved often because they always

followed their food.
