The Millennium Villages Project is a project of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, the United Nations Development Program, and Millennium Promise. It’s an approach to ending extreme poverty and meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

THE NYAMNINIA READING TENT REPORT

1.3 Objectives of the reading tent Provide education geared towards development of the child’s mental and physical

capabilities. Develop the child’s self-awareness, self-esteem and self-confidence.

Foster the child’s exploration skills, creativity, self-expression and discovery. Foster the spiritual and moral growth of the child.

1.4 The general activitiesLanguage enables children to express themselves and satisfy their needs. Through language, they communicate their feelings to others as they interact with them. A lot of learning occurs in the process of interacting with environment.

Oral SkillsOral skills include listening and speaking skills, which are essential for reading and writing readiness skills.

Reading SkillsReading readiness skills involve training children to observe and interpret details in pictures, objects or symbols. It also entails classification of objects by color, kind, shape, size and texture.

1.5 Benefits of the reading tent

A lot of learning occurs in the process of interaction. Children learn to speak as a result of living in an environment where speech is part of everyday life. There is improved listening ability, consideration, understanding and memory, development of vocabulary, the children learn to express themselves freely and confidently, speaking clearly and fluently and use of acceptable speech habits.They also develop eye hand coordination, develop interest in books, use basic tools for writing and drawing, reason and think logically, recognize, read and write letters of the alphabet recognize and write letters of the alphabet and to read simple words.

1.6 ConclusionAfter the program, the best three pupils in the reading and spelling competition were given gifts while the best overall three schools were given trophies.
