This newsletter will highlight the 2018 National

Daffodil Convention. It is the first National

Convention that I attended that was not in the

Pacific Region. My wife and I had a wonderful

time, besides seeing people from the Pacific

Region, I saw people that I only read about and

saw other people that I had not seen for many

years.

One of the most important highlights of the

convention was celebrating Harold Koopowitz

being honored for receiving the Peter Barr

Award.

In the remainder of the newsletter are

photographs of many of the events and trips that

were offered during the convention. My wife and

I had a wonderful time and hope to attend the

2019 National Convention in Minneapolis,

In this newsletter, I wanted to highlight the two

Oregon Daffodil Shows but I did not receive the

information. Hopefully, I will be able to feature

these shows and announce the 2019 events and

shows in the next newsletter.

Lastly, I’m looking forward to planting my

daffodil bulbs this coming fall. I’m patiently

waiting for more of my orders to arrive. I’m

we will get ample winter rains.

this award. Besides Harold Koopowitz, Grant Mitsch (1973) and Elise Havens (2002) [father

and daughter] recognized for their contributions to daffodil breeding; Ben Blake and Nancy

Tackett (2008) for their contributions for their worldwide support of the digital world through

software and hardware technology by improving communications and daffodil identification.

Also during the 2018 National Daffodil Convention, Harold Koopowitz won the Harold

Koopowitz Ribbon for their collection of 24 miniature cultivars, seedlings, and / or species from

2018 NATIONAL DAFFODIL CONVENTION

My wife, Frances and I arrived at the 64th

Annual American

Daffodil Convention on April 5 Thursday evening held at the

Franklin Marriott Cool Springs in Franklin, Tennessee sponsored

by The American Daffodil Society and hosted by The Middle

Tennessee Daffodil Society which was also commemorating their

60th

Anniversary. The Convention was held from Thursday to

Sunday April 5 to 8, 2018. After having dinner at hotel, we visited

the room where members were staging their flowers. We said,

“Hello” to members from the Pacific Region who were staging

their blooms: Harold Koopowitz, Marilynn Howe, Steven

Hampson, and Elise Havens. We also saw Mitch and Kate Carney,

Janet Hickman, Becky Fox Matthews (one of the Convention Co-

chairs).

On Friday, April 6, there

were two events held. One

was the Horticultural,

Photography, and design

Judging which began around

9:30 am and the Optional Bus

Tour to The Parthenon and

The Hermitage.

I was asked to be a judge and

was assigned with Tom

Streeter (lead judge) and

Mary Malavase to judge part

of the miniature daffodils.

The other miniatures team

was lead judge Marylou

Gripshover, Marilynn Howe,

and Jocelyn Thayer. Our

clerks were Janet Loyd,

Christine Berglund, Mary

Lynne Lange, and Nancy

Fuchs.

Koopowitz

As most of you are aware, after the judging is completed at a show Kirby Fong attends, he takes

photographs of all of the show winners. Prior to the Awards Dinner and Annual Meeting, there

is a social reception. After we had gotten some drinks, Frances and I wondered into the show

room and we saw Kirby taking photographs of the miniature winners.

Also in the show room was Dianne Mrak, a good friend of

Steve Hampson, and she invited us to sit at the same table

with her for the Awards Dinner. Sitting at the same table

was Harold Koopowitz, Steve Hampson, Eric Breed, Bob

Spotts, Larry Force, Elise Havens, and Christopher

Harley. After the dinner, the awards presentation

commenced, Jan Pennings came to the podium to

announce to the attendees of Harold Koopowitz being

awarded the Peter Barr Award for his contributions to

the daffodil world for over twenty years of hybridizing

and breeding of miniature daffodils. Harold was given a

well deserved standing ovation.

I sat next to Elise Havens and I always enjoy

talking to her and always enjoyed growing her

daffodils that she bred. All of us had a wonderful

time at the Awards Dinner and there was live

music by Carolyn Martin and her band.

Starting at 9:00 am on Sunday April 8,

there was the Judges Refresher presented

by Keith Kridler and he discussed historic

daffodils. After the Judges Refresher,

there was the bus tour to Cheekwood

Estate and Gardens and a visit to Susan

Basham’s home. Frances and I did not go

on the tour but decided go see the Davis

Cup (tennis) at Belmont University in

Nashville. Frances’ company sponsored

this tennis tournament and she was given

complimentary tickets. At 4:30 pm, there

was the Incoming Board Meeting presided

2018 NATIONAL DAFFODIL CONVENTION

At Sunday’s dinner, we sat with Eric Breed, Marilyn Howe, Bill and Terri Carter, Michael Brook

and Sandy and Keith Kridler. I met Michael Brook at the 2007 National Daffodil Convention

held in Tacoma, Washington (the first National Convention I attended). I remember Michael

was going to stay with Nancy Tackett and Ben Blake at their home and we were all on the same

flight back to the Bay Area, California. I sat next to Michael Brook on the plane. It was good to

catch up with Michael. Brent Heath was the keynote speaker and his presentation was

“Daffodils in American Gardens.”

At the end of the Sunday Dinner, there were two announcements: the ADS National Convention

Hilton Hotel Minneapolis/Bloomington located in Bloomington, MN; and the ADS National

Convention 2020 will be hosted by the Texas Daffodil Society. I encourage every member to

try to attend at least one convention.
