Academic Integrity and

the Code of Student Conduct

“Be aware that even if it’s unintentional, plagiarism is still a serious

academic offence.”

“Copying a direct quotation into your paper, placing quotation marks

around it, and crediting the source.”

“Taking someone’s ideas or words, putting them into your own words, and

crediting the source.”

Some other types of plagiarism:

1. “Having a friend write a paper for him or using someone else’s paper as his

own.”

2. “Submitting one of his own papers or assignments for more than one class.”

3. “Downloading or buying a term paper from the web.”

“Education is primarily a State and local responsibility in the United States. It is

States and communities, as well as public and private organizations of all kinds, that

establish schools and colleges, develop curricula, and determine requirements for

enrollment and graduation.”

“The structure of education finance in America reflects this predominant State and

local role. Of an estimated $1.15 trillion being spent nationwide on education at all

levels for school year 2011-2012, a substantial majority will come from State, local,

and private sources. This is especially true at the elementary and secondary level,

where about 87.7 percent of the funds will come from non-Federal sources.

That means the Federal contribution to elementary and secondary education is

about 10.8 percent, which includes funds not only from the Department of Education

(ED) but also from other Federal agencies, such as the Department of Health and

Human Services' Head Start program and the Department of Agriculture's School

Lunch program.”

Announcement

1. Catarina da Silva who is the program director for the graduate

programs in Educational Administration. She is going to arrange some

school placements for this class. It is planned to begin by October,

2016. Each student needs to devote one full day to the school. This is

real service that principals can learn to depend on. UMB will try to

assign 3-5 students to a single school so you can travel and work as a

group if you like. For the beginning, UMB will find elementary

schools for all the students. More information will be provided

shortly.

2. Students are encouraged in the first semester to save your best work

and begin to build your capstone portfolio, which you will defend

publicly around April-May, 2016. You use the Taskstream program to

build the portfolio, which allows you to link all the work to the state

leadership standards. Tyra Lopes Mendes, who is UMB Director of

Assessment, Accreditation & Licensure, is also UMB resident

Taskstream expert. Tyra will visit our class to introduce the program

soon.
