Situated in the heart of Ireland, Athlone Institute of
Technology (AIT) delivers an education that equips
students for career and life success. AIT graduates
lead companies around the world, conduct life-
altering research, design new ways of doing things,
and work for societal benefi t.
Established in 1970, AIT has grown from 100 students
in its fi rst year to a thriving population of 6,000
today. More than 50 different nationalities are
represented on campus, creating a truly international
educational experience.
Two hundred programs are offered at AIT, from
sub-degree courses through to PhD, across its four
schools of business, humanities, engineering and
science. This modern higher education institution
has a state-of-the-art campus, the benefi t of a
$130 million investment since 2000. In addition
to cutting-edge laboratories and lecture theatres,
AIT’s sporting infrastructure boasts Olympic-
standard indoor and outdoor facilities.
The institute’s global focus is also evident
in the 200 partnerships and agreements
it has signed with universities and
research institutions around
the world.
At the heart of AIT’s strategic vision is the ambition
to play a catalyic role in the Midlands, through
driving innovation and fostering entrepreneurial
activity. The institute can point to a track record of
success in this regard – AIT’s Midlands Innovation and
Research Center (MIRC) has supported 75 start-up
companies, creating some 400 jobs, as well as
incubating six high-potential start-ups since 2007,
positioning it to the forefront of third level
institutions supporting innovation.
Research activity in Athlone is geared towards
solving the needs of business. That applied focus
is concentrated in three strategic areas: materials
science, biomolecular sciences and computer
networking. The research institutes, which have
developed international collaborations with
leading multinational companies and universities
in Europe, Asia and the US, have attracted signifi cant
multimillion euro funding.
Athlone Institute of Technology is a young institution,
building for a bright future.
Athlone Institute of Technology has benefi tted from
$130 million investment from the Irish Government
over the past decade. This has seen a new east campus
developed, as well as world class infrastructure in
engineering and informatics, hospitality studies,
applied sciences, health science, and innovation and
research. International calibre sporting facilities have
been developed from the institute’s own fund-raising
and represent an investment of $20 million.
The changed economic climate means that AIT is now
looking to new sources to deliver upon its strategic
objective to play a catalytic role in the Midlands.
The institute has purchased a six-acre site, on which
it plans to develop the Midlands Technology Campus,
which it is anticipated will cost $32 million to complete.
Midlands Technology Campus
The Midlands Technology Campus represents a
bold vision of industry and higher education coming
together in a collaborative environment. The campus
will include best-in-class facilities to convert academic
research into real-world benefi t in the areas of
biotechnology and medical innovation. The campus
will also include a support infrastructure that will
enable the next generation of entrepreneurs to develop
their business ideas and fi nd commercial success.
Center for Applied Medical Technologies
The Center for Applied Medical Technologies will
bring industry and academic research expertise
together in new and exciting ways. It will involve
Irish and multinational partners collaborating to
solve problems relating to our understanding of
disease and the development of innovative medical
devices for the treatment of patients.
This translational research activity will take place in
the areas of bio-development and medical innovations,
which will involve cross-disciplinary work between
science, engineering and software research. Such
collaborations will focus on the development of
biomedical coatings, drug delivery and preparation
of scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.
This applied research will be further enhanced
by confi dential ‘fi re-walled’ units in the medical
innovation facility, where research teams will be able
to develop products from concept to pilot production
in clean room facilities.
The need for preclinical testing facilities in Ireland
will also be met in the center, which will enable client
companies to safely test for human cell therapies.
Midlands Business Development Center
Entrepreneurship Academy
The Entrepreneurship Academy will attract fi nal
year students and graduates with the best business
proposals and will provide them with a launching
pad to further develop their ideas. The ambition for
the Academy is to develop a pipeline of spin-out
companies from this pool of talented graduate
entrepreneurs, thereby driving job creation.
Participants in the Academy will be able to access
the expertise of AIT’s Business School, as well as the
support of mentors and business angels from industry.
Specifi cally, they will develop the key skills and
knowledge to succeed, including entrepreneurship,
venture formation and development, strategic
thinking, marketing and selling, design, ethics
and leadership skills.
Center for SME Competitiveness and Growth
This center will focus on the specifi c needs of the
9,000 SMEs in the Midlands of Ireland, equipping
them with the ability to compete more effectively and
effi ciently. These businesses operate in a wide variety
of industries and sectors, but they are characterised
by a shared need for enhanced skills in management
development for growth, strategic thinking, competitor
analysis, market research and best practices in business
processes such as HR and operations. The center will
provide an access point for these SMEs to the expertise
of AIT’s Business School, as well as the support of
mentors and business angels from industry.
Incubation Facilities
This expanded incubation space at AIT will build on the
excellent work carried out by the Midlands Innovation
and Research Center. It will have as its focus the
specifi c needs of second stage companies, those which
have high growth potential and are moving to the next
stage of their development. Services and supports will
focus on helping clients secure further rounds of
funding, access international markets and add further
value to their products and services.
The incubation facilities will also offer space
for early stage FDI companies and international
entrepreneurs seeking to establish and develop a
business in Ireland, in line with Enterprise Ireland’s
$13 million programme.
Auditorium
The auditorium will expand the conference and
performance infrastructure of the Midlands region.
It will play a major role in terms of being a conference
resource for visiting industry, research and educational
partners. The facilities will have the ICT capacity to
broadcast proceedings, utilising the web and other
teleconferencing technologies. Furthermore, it will
also be available to the local community for a variety
of uses, ranging from public lectures to cultural
performances.
