American Heritage Girls at the Omaha Symphony 2:00 pm - Omaha Symphony Family Concert, “Sherlock: Case of the Missing Music” The game is afoot and Sherlock Holmes is on the case when the orchestra's melody goes missing. Everyone is a suspect as Sherlock investigates to great music including Gershwin’s “American in Paris,” Mancini’s “The Pink Panther,” and Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture.” Can he solve the mystery in time to save the concert? 4:15 pm* Pizza Party with Boy Scouts (*Approximate time.) Please note, all workshop participants from both groups receive first priority for pizza. Parents and other attendees will receive any remaining pizza after all participants have been fed.

Instructions and Information

American Heritage Girls at the Omaha Symphony is designed to provide an opportunity for participants and their families to experience a live concert and participate in a workshop with Omaha Symphony staff and musicians.

Through the concert experience, workshop, and a little work at home, “Music Appreciation” objectives will be met for the following AHG levels: Tenderheart (Grades 1-3) & Explorer (Grades 4-6)

Activities & objectives to be completed during AHG at the Omaha Symphony: *Activities adapted in conjunction with “Music Appreciation” objectives listed below.*

#1. Learn about how sounds are made, and create your own instrument(s). #2. Learn about the four families of instruments in an orchestra.

ACTIVITY “A”: Explore the Orchestra and How Music is Made. Girls will be introduced to instruments from the different musical families of the orchestra and discuss how each family produces sound.

ACTIVITY “B”: Make an Instrument and Create a Performance. Girls will make simple instruments and use these instruments to play a piece along with an Omaha Symphony musician.

#3. Think about how your family uses music for celebration. #4. Choose a recorded song or piece to share, and discuss the music. #6. Notice and discuss how music is used in your daily activities. #7. Listen to two (2) versions of the same song, and compare/contrast them.

ACTIVITY “C”: Travel around the world of music. Girls will learn more about select composers and their music from a wide variety of genres and backgrounds, including two different takes on the same song!

Activities to be completed at home prior to attending (for Explorers, Grades 4-6): • As a family, discuss proper concert etiquette prior to the concert, using the guide at the end of this packet. (Addresses Objective #8: Using correct concert etiquette can help you get the most out of a performance.)

• Keep a music journal for one week, noting and reflecting on all of the different uses of music in your daily life. (Addresses Objective #6: Keep a music journal for one week. Your notes can be used for discussion at the workshop!)

must purchase tickets to the symphony’s performance for $10.00 a person. All seating is general admission.

Registrations must be received by Monday, February 26, 2018. Tickets will be mailed to your address.
