GUESS WHO!!
Mention thecharacter CountDracula, and moviefans will likely pictureBela Lugosi.
He was bornBela Blasko onOct. 20, 1882, inLugos, Hungary(now Romania).
As a teen, hestudied at an actingacademy inBudapest, thenjoined the HungarianNational Theatre.
He immigrated tothe U.S. in 1921.
He made hisU.S. stage debut in1922, but because hedidn’t speak Englishwell, he learned hislines phonetically.
Lugosi gainednational acclaim forhis portrayal ofnovelist BramStoker’s vampirecount in “Dracula.”He starred inthe Broadwayproduction, thenthe 1931 film. Bothhandsome andsinister, with hisfitting accent, his performancehas become thetimeless standard forthe character.
October 2016
Robert Garritano was born and raised in South West, Chicago. His wife, Edith, was his one and only. They were married for twelve years before she passed withbreast cancer. He has four children, two boys and two girls. Bob graduated fromFenger High School in 1949 and went on to Wilson Jr. College for one year. Hejoined the Navy in 1950, learning and growing in the Navy as a Boilerman. Headvanced quickly in the Navy, achieving 1st class within four years because of hisability to follow rules and stay on the straight course. One of his favorite memoriesis visiting Yokahama, Japan while on furlough. One of the hardest lessons he hasencountered in life was when Edith passed away and he was raising four children.Bobby G. was recently honored at the Honor Flight Chicago, flew to Washington tovisit the monuments of the Korean War, and be formally thanked for his heroicservice to the United States of America. He is looking for veterans who want toapply for the Honor Flight to experience this once in a lifetime event. On his returnto Midway, the children were what struck him the most as he was walking down thepath of cheering crowds. He was so taken with their thankfulness. He was given asuitcase of letters, plaques and pins from all around and cannot believe how far andwide the tentacles reached out to people. He currently has lived at American HouseCedarlake for about one year with his dog, Bella. He has a girlfriend, Judy, of fiveyears from whom he has learned a lot. Judy taught him to be concerned for othersmore than himself. His philosophy in life is, “To keep your nose clean – stay straightbecause you never know how it will affect you.” Do your best in life.
