2016 AH OlympicsLost Keys by Jan C.
“Oh, where are they?” Joannawailed. They referred to her keys: thekeys to her apartment, her car, thelibrary, where she worked part-time,and Gail’s apartment in Carver City. Thenext town to the west of Des Plat homeof the Minnesota Bengals football team.
“Why don’t I call Gail?” she thought, hopefully. She rummaged in her purse, feeling for her smart phone. Oh, no! Herbattery showed one percent.
“You’re so stupid. Those darn wordgames eat up the juice. Too bad I’maddicted to them.”
Deciding that the best course ofaction would be to enter Meadow LarkApartments, a charming three storyVictorian Painted Lady, in shades ofivory and green to ring Mr. Juniper’sbell. Worse case, she could ring MissPalmer, her floor mate to see if shecould borrow her landline to call Gail.
Inside the foyer, which was tastefullydecorated in apple green, rose, andivory to match the exterior, with a roundAubusson carpet on the dark hardwoodfloor, she took note of the sign taped toMr. Juniper’s bell. Landlord out until5:00. Joanna’s pink watch read 3:05.
She rang Miss Parkers’ bell and gavethe elderly lady ample time to answer, before trying again.
“No luck,” she thought gloomily.“Miss Parker must be out with herniece, Molly, running errands.”
Outside again, she sat on thecushioned porch swing and in herfrustration, she dumped the contents ofher purse on the porch swing. At thispoint she was still unwilling to admitfailure. She enumerated the items thathad been in her Jimmy Choo bag: MAC
lipstick, mascara, makeupremover pads, mirror and walletcontaining her id. No key fob.
She could hear plaintivemeowing coming from the thirdfloor. She stepped off of the rosepainted porch. There wasManzie, her brown and tawnyMaine coon cat, who weighed awhopping 20 pounds.
“Manzie, Mama will be in tofeed you, as soon as she findsher keys,” she told the cat.
She returned to the porch andlooked through the Mata HariLingerie shopping bag: silk, pajamas, bras, and pantie. Thenshe looked into the bagcontaining the book she boughtat Ye Olde Booke Shoppe andeye-shadow and eyeliner, shebought at Pretty Girl Cosmeticsand skin care. No Keys.
Big tears rolled down hercheeks leaving black mascaratracks. She fumbled in her pursefor the makeup remover pads butthey evaded her. This made hercry all the harder.
Tom had been walking allafternoon under the sky the colorof a cerulean blue sea. Theambient light came from theantique golden warmth of theautumnal sun. He enteredMeadow Lark Lane and heardheartbreaking sobs. He hadto stop.
“Hey, it can’t be that bad,” akind, masculine voice said.Joanna looked up and tried toblink an eyelash out of her eye tosee who the owner of thatvoice was.

DroughtI prayed today about the rain, that
fell from such a darkened sky.I prayed today about the rain, that
fell upon the land so dry.Was it sent to us on time! Oh, pray
it came to us on time! Will so much flora come to life,
pressing the earth toward fluid light. How long we have waited, how
long we have cried, to see ourland become hot and die. Each day is death. So hot, so dry,
could fearful times now pass usby. What will be these next long day’s
