Memorable Melody:‘Don’t Sit Under the

Apple Tree (With AnyoneElse But Me)’

A pact made betweencountless young soldiers andtheir sweethearts was summedup in this swing hit from WorldWar II. The song debuted in1939, but didn’t top the chartsuntil 1942. That year, three of theera’s most popular entertainersrecorded it: Glenn Miller, KayKyser, and the Andrews Sisters, who performed it in a memorablescene in the film “PrivateBuckaroo.” With its upbeattempo and “No, no, no” hook, itwas a feel-good morale boosterfor the time.

Nature’s Best DadsAnimals don’t often get nominated

for father of the year, so let’s hear itfor several who should. HappyFather’s Day to:

Emperor penguins. Females needto feed and refuel after laying eggs, leaving males to incubate the eggs inthe frigid Antarctic. For two months, the penguin dads balance an egg ontheir feet, protecting it with theirbrooding pouches. After the chickshatch, the fathers feed them amilk-like substance until the mothersreturn.

Marmosets. These tree-dwellingprimates often give birth to twins ortriplets. When the babies are a fewweeks old, the father steps in to helpraise the young—feeding, groomingand carrying them on his back.

Mourning doves. Thesemonogamous birds team up to reartheir broods. After working together tobuild a nest, Dad sits on the eggsfrom morning to afternoon, then Momtakes over until dawn. Both take turnsfeeding their hatchlings.

Sea catfish. Unlike most fish, thisbewhiskered father refuses to leavehis offspring to fend for themselves. Infact, he protects the fertilized eggsand the hatchlings in his mouth formonths, forgoing food the whole time.

Wolves. Predator mammals aren’tknown for having doting fathers, which is why the wolf pack is a specialfamily bond. While the she-wolfguards pups in the den, the father—her mate for life—hunts for the family.Later, he acts as a protective mentor.

Fun at the Farmers’ MarketFarmers’ markets have a lot to offer

shoppers: locally grown fruits andvegetables, low prices, and thechance to get out and enjoy the freshair. Follow these tips to get the mostout of your market experience:

Decide when to go. If you want thebest selection on produce, go early inthe morning. But if you’re on abudget, know that many vendors markdown their wares later in the day.

Bring bags. Don’t expect stallsto provide bags for you to carryyour purchases. Canvas shoppingbags, insulated bags, and plasticor paper bags saved from otherstores are smart and environmentallyfriendly choices.

Carry cash. Some vendors willaccept credit or debit cards, but thiscomes at a cost to them and can slowdown a transaction. Bring plenty ofsmall bills to avoid hassles.

Browse before you buy. Do a quicklap around the market before you buyanything. You’ll be able to spot thebest prices and best-looking produceinstead of overpaying for the first freshtomatoes or ripe berries you see.

Ask questions. Want to know whatfertilizers or pesticides were used, ifany? Have questions about the bestway to prepare and eat a particularvegetable? Most farmers at themarket will be excited and proud todiscuss their work.
