Hand-WashingBy Brian RossoHand-washing is the best way

to stay healthy and avoid germs.Below are some tips for washingyour hands:

• Use water that is at least100 degrees F.

• Use plenty of soap.• Make sure to scrub your

hands for 10 to 15 seconds.Singing the “HappyBirthday” song twice toyourself is a good way totime your hand scrubbing.

• Always rinse your handswell after scrubbing.

• Turn off water faucets with apaper towel.

• If you have to open thebathroom door upon exit, use a paper towel to openthe door, which helps keepyour hands clean.

• Germs can stay alive on ourhands for up to three hours.

• Interesting fact:Right-handed people washtheir left hand morethoroughly than their righthand and vice versa.

Have a safe and clean-handsummer!

“Her Occupation”One day the census taker called and

wrote down in a book, and so as I wasalso there, I thought I’d take a look.He had our names and ages all, andput down Dad’s vocation, and after

Mother’s name he wrote she had “Nooccupation.”

Why, Mother’s up by sun’s first light, and through the work she races. She

starts the breakfast, straightensthings, and washes all our faces. Shepacks our lunches, finds our books, ofcourse it keeps her busy. She washes, irons, sweeps and dusts, you’d think

she would be dizzy! She bakes acake, and maybe pies, she finds some

time for sewing. There’s mending, making over too, because we all are

growing. Then dinner comes, anddishes next, first one thing then

another. And our homework bothersus, we say, “Please help us, Mother!”So she keeps going all the time, andthough she’s often weary. She isn’tever out of sorts, She’s always gay

and cheery. She keeps so busy everyday, she soon needs a vacation. Andyet the census man wrote down shehad “No Occupation.” Alice Flood

As the school yearcomes to an end, reflect on these wisewords, created bygrade schoolers whoadded their owntwists to somepopular proverbs:

A journey of athousand milesbegins with ... aprivate jet.

Don’t count yourchickens ... it takestoo long.

Two’s company,three’s ... themusketeers.

Better late than ...absent.

Early to bed, earlyto rise ... is first inthe bathroom.

If you can’t standthe heat ... tryAntarctica.

A penny saved ...is not a lot.

A rolling stone ...plays the guitar.

If at first you don’tsucceed ... livewith it.

It’s always darkestbefore ... I openmy eyes.

A miss is as goodas ... a mister.
