DearConferenceAttendees,OnbehalfoftheAmericanIndianStudiesAssociation(AISA)Boarditisapleasuretowelcomeyoutothe20thconferenceoftheAmericanIndianStudiesAssociation.Thisyear’stheme,“TheKnowledgeofOurAncestors,theStrengthofOurCommunities”honorsthesacredknowledgeofourancestorsandIndigenouscommunities.Thisyearmarksthe20thmeetingoftheAmericanIndianStudiesAssociation.Twentyyearsago,ElizabethCook-Lynnwrote:“thechallengetodayistorememberthatthefocusofNativeAmericanStudieswasinthebeginninganattempttocreateamechanismindefenseoftheindigenousprinciplesofsovereigntyandnationhood.”1Today,wecarryforwardwiththatchallengeasourscholarshipandcommunity-organizingeffortscontinuetodefendnationhoodandthesovereignandinherentrightwepossesstofollowourownoriginalinstructions.ThedisciplineofAmericanIndian/NativeAmericanStudiespromotestheseeffortsandcontinuestoserveasanintellectualspacethathonorsIndigenousthoughtandpractice.Iwouldliketogivea“WopidaTanka,”abigandheartfeltthankyoutoEliseBoxerandJamesRidingInfortheirguidanceandhelpinorganizingthisyear’sconferenceagenda.Ihopethateveryonewillenjoytheopportunitiestohavemeaningfuldiscussionsandconversationsthroughouttheconferenceandlongafter.Sincerely,
