Stewardship Reflections

Today's Gospel from John recounts the exchange between the Lord and St. Peter. Three times Jesus enjoins Peter - the first time to “Feed my lambs,” then to “Tend my sheep,” and finally to “Feed my sheep.” Most scholars and theologians have concluded that this was Christ’s command to Peter to create the Church and to establish a formal means through which the flock, the people, could be fed through the gift and power of the Eucharist and nourished through the Word of God.

Of course, Jesus was saying that not only to Peter, but also to all of us. What do we do to feed the Lord’s sheep? At Mass, we are one of the sheep coming to be fed but it would seem that Jesus is challenging us to do more than that. If we view ourselves as stewards of our faith, our families, and communities, it means that we are expected to do more, to give more of ourselves to assure that the flock is truly tended and fed.

How would you rate as an evangelist to your friends, families and neighbors? As stewards, we are called to not only be a loyal disciple of Christ, but also to share our faith with those around us. Whether it is through our thoughts, words, or actions, evangelization is an essential tool of stewardship.

Make a concerted effort to share the gift of your faith with someone. Ask them to attend Mass with you, offer to say a prayer before dining at a social function, or invite someone to join your weekly bible study group.

You never know how your suggestion may help feed the faith of a fellow Catholic, or how your own faith may be fed, as well.

Christ is risen! As His disciples, we are called to go forth and spread the good news of Christ's Resurrection. The

fruitful ministries at our parish are examples of how many of you have answered, and continue to answer, that call.

To ensure such work can continue requires not only gifts of time, but also of financial help. We ask you to prayerfully consider supporting our parish with electronic donations through Faith Direct.

Enroll online at w w w. Fa i t h D i r e c t . n e t , our church code is CA308.

As always, know that your generosity is truly a gift from God.

Thank you to all who participated in the inaugural March 23 “Faith in action: american martyrs Day oF Volunteering” We had more than 120 participants in the various activities, highlighted by 40 workers at two Habitat for Humanity sites,

and about 30 who helped at the Heal tHe bay beach cleanup at the Manhattan Beach pier,

and 30 more making lunches in the B&B room. The attendance at the 8aM Mass that morning was incredibly powerful in connecting prayer with activism. We hope to make this an annual event, but also want to remind you that many of these projects are on-going through our various ministries. Check the bulletin for more information if you are interested in participating in the monthly visits to the St. Francis downtown shelter (every 1st Saturday), lunch making for St. Lawrence of Brindisi (every 2nd Saturday), beach cleanups (every 3rd Saturday) as well as news of more senior home visits, pet adoptions and clothing and appliance drives.contact: Tom Hoffarth, s j o @ a m e r i c a n m a r t y r s . o r g .

WALK FOR LIFE for the Pregnancy Help Center Saturday, May 18, 8:30aM, Veteran's Park, Redondo BeachThe Pregnancy Help Center has been serving women and their families in the South Bay Community for over 35 years. Starting as a crisis pregnancy hotline in 1971, the Center opened its doors in 1976 and was licensed by the State of California as a medical clinic in 1981. Free prenatal consultations by an OB/GYN were added in 1997, and free STD testing and treatment began to be offered in 2008. Recently, the Center has been remodeled and will begin offering ultrasound services this year. Your support will help fund the following services:• Free ultrasound services (allowing women to not only affirm life

but to save lives by significantly reducing the likelihood of the mother choosing abortion).

• Additional operating expenses associated with offering ultrasound services

• Pregnancy & STD testing and counseling to serve more women and men

“Lord, You have passed over into new life, and You now invite us to pass over also. We pray that as we turn to You, our faces will never look back. Instead, like You, let us make heaven on earth in our hearts.” -- St. Bernard of Clairvaux (12th century)

The effect of God’s grace is to bring us back to our original and intended course, with a yearning for increased holiness and infinite goodness. God’s grace is experienced in many ways and times, and particularly in prayer. Please join us in prayer for this Easter season. We begin with a brief reading, followed by two periods of silent prayer, closing with “Our Father”.

Please join us once, often or always, for the Love of it! MiniStry contact: Donna Ennis, 310-545-7920

DID YOU KNOW? Support Archdiocese’s 2013 Child Abuse Prevention Month CampaignApril is national Child Abuse Prevention Month and “Keep Kids Safe” month in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. It is most appropriate that these events take place during the Easter Season, since there is no better time to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God — our children. During this month, numerous activities will take place to celebrate what we have accomplished in protecting our children and young people and in remembering and praying for victims/survivors of sexual abuse. Children in Catholic schools and Religious Education programs in the Archdiocese will wear bright blue ribbon-shaped stickers that say, “Keep Kids Safe.” To view the 2013 Child Abuse Prevention package and order resources go to “Keep Kids Safe” stickers and other resources at: www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/safeguard/Pages/CAPM.aspx
