Our Gift to Kids and TeachersAs we conclude an incredibly challenging year for all of us, it’s a time to review a few of the accomplishments WOSU has made in service to our community. Since it’s the holiday season, my thoughts turned to the work we do with young children, families and local teachers. Amy Palermo leads our WOSU Classroom division and her team has been remarkably productive despite the restrictions that have come with the pandemic. Here are just a few examples:

• With our creative production team, we developed the Drawing with Mr. J video series for grades K–5 focusing on social and emotional learning. These videos are funded through the State of Ohio and hosted by Jon Juravich, the 2018 Ohio Teacher of the Year. wosu.org/mrj

• Partnered with the National Veterans Memorial and Museum on an oral history project for kids in grades 5–8 called Stories of the Brave funded by the Stewart Malquist Fund. wosu.org/stories-of-the-brave

• Launched an extensive At Home Learning website to support WOSU TV’s special schedule of educational broadcasting as students moved home to learn in March. wosu.org/classroom/learningathome

• Trained 300 teachers from Whitehall and 250 teachers from Lancaster on remote learning techniques and, with our producers, created 38 videos focused on remote learning for teachers that have received over 14,000 views.

• Created Be My Neighbor Day event that received baby item donations for the nonprofit Moms2B and included virtual family events related to the PBS program Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. Thanks to PNC Bank and Fred Rogers Productions for their support.

• Launched an important Digital Wellness program, in collaboration with eleven school districts, that provides free resources for schools and parents in the areas of digital well-being, citizenship, etiquette and safety. wosu.org/classroom/digital-wellness

• Launched Teacher Campus, a series of professional learning opportunities for K–12 teachers. Featuring both self-guided and instructor-led courses, Teacher Campus enables teachers to personalize their learning plans to achieve their unique professional goals. teachercampus.org

Together, We Dealt with A Lot This Year

We kicked off 2020 with much to be excited about. With 20 million pounds of concrete poured, our new HQ was quickly coming out of the ground. 89.7 NPR News had once again been named Ohio’s Best Radio News Operation from the Ohio AP. WOSU Classroom had just launched a slew of successful new programs. And on March 2, WOSX went on the air expanding WOSU’s regional radio network to include Granville and portions of Newark and Heath.

By mid-March, everything had changed. Many of the WOSU staff were sent home to shelter in place as COVID-19 became more serious. We are grateful for the essential workers – reporters, on-air hosts, engineers, programmers and business office staff – who remained in the Fawcett Center, following strict safety protocols, to keep our radio and television stations on the air. As Central Ohio shut down, WOSU quickly cranked up new initiatives to meet the needs of our community.

A Trusted Source in Response to COVIDWOSU launched a liveblog providing up-to-the-minute virus updates. We carried the Governor’s daily briefings and produced local news briefs aired after PBS NewsHour. In daily town hall forums, All Sides with Ann Fisher focused on coronavirus topics.

As schools closed, WOSU TV aired in-home educational programming, particularly impactful to students with limited internet access. On May 3, WOSU produced, broadcast and livestreamed a virtual Ohio State commencement – the most unique in the university’s 150-year history.

Classical 101’s Quarantine Classics provided respite and connected listeners with musical performances. Through the Letters from Home project, the community shared their pandemic stories. We developed and hosted a variety of free virtual events and launched a webpage with other online resources.

Elevating Voices for Racial Justice From the May 25 death of George Floyd, 89.7 NPR News and All Sides provided ongoing coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement and calls for police reform. WOSU’s Community Conversations digital series created provocative conversations. Online, WOSU curated important resources about race, racism, bias, protests, civil rights, Black history and more.

Access to Knowledge – 2020 ElectionAnd as we entered the fall, our popular Ohio Voter Guide became the most-visited page (ever) of our website. A new “How to Vote” campaign reached new audiences. And on election night, the team at 89.7 NPR News alongside colleagues at NPR and PBS monitored the count as the results from election day voting came in and provided a calm reporting of the facts.

As we flip the calendar to 2021, consider a New Year’s resolution to become a sustaining member. It’s through your continued support that we will again step up in service to the community in the new year ahead.

It has been an incredible year. The impeachment of the president, a global pandemic, a statehouse bribery scandal, social justice protests, a close bitter election. 2020 was a news year like no other, and it provides lessons for newsrooms and journalists.

Expect the unexpected. Journalists prepare for surprises, but this year pushed us to our limits. Not only did we have to cover unexpected news, but we had to do it from home, from behind a mask, avoiding pepper spray.

Listen deeply. Journalists listen to others for a living, but 2020 taught us to listen more closely. We learned to try to understand and appreciate the life experiences behind the quotes.

Seek out diverse voices. We need to hear from people of color not just when they are mad or in trouble. Reporters should not only seek out people of different races and backgrounds, but people with different points of view. We need to hear from those who are skeptical of government, as well as those who want government to do more.

Question authority. The media has rediscovered its watchdog role. Having a president who regularly makes false claims prompted a Watergate-like level of investigative reporting. Mobile phone camera footage taught reporters to question official police accounts of

Classical 101: Classical Music Holiday Favorites ProMusica Chamber Orchestra returns to the airwaves in December with four new concerts, including two Schubert symphonies, a work for bandoneon and chamber orchestra, a couple of favorite violin concertos and the Ohio premiere of a percussion concerto featuring Colin Currie. Join host Boyce Lancaster Sunday afternoons at 1pm.

It has been a tough year for the performing arts, and the Metropolitan Opera has certainly not been immune. With the Met’s painful decision to cancel live performances for the current season, many worried about the weekly radio broadcasts. Launched in 1931, the Met’s Saturday Matinee Broadcasts are the longest-running classical radio series in American broadcast history. That tradition continues unbroken in the 2020 - 2021 season with an expanded schedule of encore broadcasts selected from the company’s audio archives and aired over

the Toll Brothers – Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network.

Beginning December 5, 2020, listeners can tune in to hear exhilarating performances originally broadcast live from the Met stage. Remarkable moments from recent and past seasons include the radio broadcast debuts of Anna Netrebko, Leontyne Price and Franco Corelli, as well as Renée Fleming’s final bow as Strauss’s Marschallin.

December highlights include Hansel and Gretel on December 19 and The Magic Flute on December 26.

As 2020 draws to a close, Classical 101 takes time to celebrate traditional holidays with music for the season. Check out our full schedule of holiday specials at wosu.org/holiday.

Classical 101 marks the first night of Hanukkah with an annual favorite, “Candles Burning Brightly” with host Mindy Ratner. Hear it Thursday, December 10 at 8pm.

Then, beginning Monday, December 14, you can enjoy Christmas specials each weeknight at 8pm. Highlights include favorites like “A Chanticleer Christmas” and the “St. Olaf Christmas Festival” and some new offerings.

Our local hosts will have personal gifts for you in the form of holiday specials they’ve programmed with some of their favorites. Look for Jennifer Hambrick’s “An English Cathedral Christmas” and Kent Teeters’ “A John Rutter Christmas.” And Christopher Purdy will pull out all the stops on Christmas night for Front Row Center, with holiday selections by some of your favorite opera singers.
