This presenta-tion will discuss the use of dual-energy X-ray absorptiom-etry (DXA), leptin levels and P300 amplitude in providing a precise characterization of adiposity and better management of obesity.

2:30-3:30 p.m. Fat Reform: Obesity, Food Politics and the Perils of Dietary Carbohydrates (Jeffry Gerber, M.D., F.A.A.F.P.) This talk will focus on the metabolic pathways regulating food and hunger, including why all macronutrients are not created equal.

This interactive workshop includes pre-participation assessment, prescription, monitoring and resources needed to help individuals from this unique popula-tion overcome their barriers to exercise. C: "Help Me, Doc, My Weight Quit Falling! What Can I Do?” (W. Allen Rader, M.D., F.A.S.B.P.)A frustrating time for patients and obesity medicine specialists is when the patient quits losing. This talk will display multiple clinic examples of using graphs for pa-tient weight-loss progress to determine the causes of and interventions for barriers in weight-loss control. A bariatric differential diagnosis will be presented to evaluate failures in progress at different stages of weight control. Various motivational talks for patient care will be shared.

B: Gender Differences in Weight Loss (Erin Chamberlin-Snyder, M.D., F.A.A.F.P.)This workshop will discuss the differences in male and female brain structures’ responses to food stimuli and hormone activity as evidenced by genetic studies and human positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Participants will explore possible strategies in behavior modification based on gender differences to promote weight loss and maintenance.

C: Doing Very-low-calorie Diet (VLCD) on a Shoestring (Robert Smythe, M.D.)This presentation will cover treating patients in lower income areas, including practice management, prod-uct choices and insurance versus cash-pay patients.

10:30-11:15 a.m. Breakout Tracks: Session 1A: Cardiovascular Outcome Trials (Ed J. Hendricks, M.D., F.A.S.B.P.)Following reports of the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes Trial (SCOUT), the FDA has begun to require Cardiovascular Outcome Trials (CVOTs) for new weight-loss drugs. Sibutramine was taken off-market as a result of SCOUT, but further analysis of the data suggests this was inappropriate. Design and analysis of CVOTs will be discussed along with potential pitfalls. Potential impacts on the future of obesity treatment and on new drug discovery and development will be reviewed.

B: Affordability of Weight Loss - Is it Possible to Lose Weight if Someone is Poor? (Krishna Doniparthi, M.D.)This lecture is a comparison on the cost analysis of creating a nutritional program for someone with a low income or otherwise and who is micro- and macro-nutrient complete.

C: Bariatric Lab Tests (J. Warren Willey, D.O.) Obesity medicine specialists can use a variety of labora-tory tests, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle size, inflammatory measures and food allergy testing, to help optimize their practices and patients’ outcomes. This session will cover some of the many possibilities available in laboratory testing in obesity medicine.

11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Breakout Tracks: Session 2A: What Can You Do to Help the Difficult, Non-responding Patient? (Scott Rigden, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., F.A.S.B.P.) All bariatricians have had the frustrating experience of giving maximum effort to help a patient with no results. In some cases, it seems the patient's body violates the first law of thermodynamics. This talk will explore nine often over-looked categories of in-novative interventions that can help the patient break through. This lecture will analyze actual case studies that illustrate how to work with these options.

B: Behavior Modification In Adolescents (RaeLynn Musick, R.N., B.S.N., F.N.P.C.)This talk will focus on the teenager and obesity. Be-havior modification techniques, motivational ideas and social-eating tips will be covered. This will be geared for the practitioner to present to parents and teens to help with the already established weight-loss plan.

C: Comprehensive Care for the Obese Patient: Blending the Surgical and Non-surgical Approach (Jennifer Seger, M.D., & Michael Seger, M.D., F.A.C.S.) Providing the best care for obese patients requires good communication and a cooperative approach between the surgeon and non-surgical bariatrician. This is not always as easy as it sounds…remember residency? This talk will focus on moving past professional stereotypes, breaking down barriers and understanding more about how we can help one another achieve the best outcomes for our patients.

3:30-4:30 p.m. Breakout Tracks: Session 5A: Weight Regain after Bariatric Surgery (Craig Primack, M.D., F.A.A.P.)Weight regain is a common phenomenon following bariatric surgery. This talk will focus on how to predict weight gain after weight-loss surgery and what to do about it.

B: Assisting the Bariatric Patient ThroughBehavior Change: Effective Tools for a 15-minute Office Visit (Phillip Snider, D.O., R.D.)Maintenance of weight loss is arguably the most dif-ficult part of the process. This lecture will show practi-tioners how to identify and address five factors, other than willpower, that influence patients’ behavior.

8-10:30 a.m. Anti-obesity Medication on the HorizonThere has been a great increase in the incidence of obesity during the past 30 years; however, there are limited advances in the pharmacotherapy of this condition. With the appearance of new obesity drugs that have been or may soon be approved for use in the treatment of obesity, 2012 is a milestone year in the world of obesity medicine. This panel discussion will provide an overview of the mecha-nisms of action for Qsymia, Belviq and Contrave, including time for questions and answers regarding their use.

10:45-11:30 a.m. Breakout Tracks: Session 1A: Using Phentermine, Topiramate and/or Qsymia (Ed J. Hendricks, M.D., F.A.S.B.P.) Phentermine and topiramate mono-therapy and combinations for obesity treatment will be discussed. Results with fixed doses (i.e., Qsymia) from clinical trials will be compared with flexible dosing. Prevalence of use among clinicians, as discovered through the ASBP 2012 Prescribing Practices Survey, will be reviewed. Long-term safety issues will be examined.

B: An Office-based Low-carbohydrate Approach to Pediatric Obesity (Michael Bateman, D.O.)Obesity in the pediatric population presents unique chal-lenges. This session will review the prevalence and causes of pediatric obesity and how to use growth charts, includ-ing the "pros" and "cons" of determining normal versus abnormal growth. This presentation also will explain the evidence for the use of a low-carbohydrate approach to obesity and how to evaluate and counsel pediatric patients in the context of preventative care.

This presentation will review the potential mechanisms explaining the observed associations, implications for personal decision-making, and recommendations for changes in patients’ lifestyles.

11:15 a.m.-Noon How Statins Really Work Explains Why Statins Don't Work (Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D., M.S.)This talk will describe the many mechanisms by which statin drugs disrupt cellular function through their interference with the mevalonate pathway. It will show how the diverse side effects associated with statins can be explained directly through their biological effects, and the presenter will argue that the trade-off between benefits and risks should be reevaluated in light of these adverse effects.
