O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! - Psalm 95:6 (NRSV) Worship is central to our encountering and experiencing God. It helps us meet the divine in a tangible way. I think it was best described as connecting the people of God to the presence of God in the midst of community. It is a blessing to worship our God. The worship we enjoy here at Asbury is the work of many people over many years and reflects who we are as a congregation and where we desire to go with God. I have loved experiencing worship with you in all of the styles and forms that Asbury has. Whether it’s a casual service in the garden or a beauty of the late Christmas Eve service, I felt the presence of God in each of these settings. I have also felt the love that you all have for God and one another in the midst of worship. It is truly amazing to behold. As we enter fully into the New Year, 2020, I have begun to make subtle changes to each of the services to, I hope, help us connect with the Spirit of God. At EMA, our 8:15 a.m. service, I have eliminated the procession and will be looking to streamline the liturgy and add some variety to the various worship elements. Michael and I are looking at some of the old hymns as well as new music to enhance this service. We may say several different creeds or add other liturgical elements to bring energy to the service. At CAYR, our 8:45 a.m. service in the Fellowship Hall, I have felt blessed by an amazing praise team and fabulous lay leaders that facilitate this service. It is my hope to add more visual elements and to continue to grow the involvement of the laity by starting a worship team to plan the service. If you are interested in being part of this new worship team, please talk with me or Kristen. We would love to include your energy and ideas. Festive worship, at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary, will continue to embody the best of the traditional worship experience. It will feature bold liturgy and amazing music from organ, piano, choirs, bells, and various ensembles. I will be looking to continue to enhance this service and help us experience the awe of God. Worship is central to our encountering and experiencing God. I invite you to pray and to share with me what God has laid on your heart for worship here at Asbury. My prayer is that it inspires all of us to embrace the mystery and majesty of our God, Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer. Blessing and Peace to you all,

Pastor Tom

Finance – 2019 Year End/2020 Budget One of the greatest indications of our love for the Lord and His church is both our desire to give, as well as the action of giving. The Bible even gives us the story of Jesus sitting and watching the activity of giving. Most of us know the story of the “Widow's Mite” in Luke 21:1-4. ” And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”

Jesus wasn't rebuking those who gave out of their abundance. He did, however, take special note of the extraordinary sacrifice in which this widow gave all she had. Does Jesus expect us to do that? This act of giving seemed to be a particular moment in time that Jesus used to show the sacrifice sometimes involved with giving. The question is really, “what is God calling us to give this year?” The Finance Committee is honored to report that with your generous giving combined with savings throughout expense categories we finished 2019 with a net of $31,377.54! This includes tithing $896 to the Christian Shelter from our Christmas Eve collection. All of you have made this possible. In support of our 2020 operating budget we have received 187 pledges representing $608,049.28. This includes 56 increases, 3 new pledges and 3 new electronic transfers. As you can see from the summary chart, we have approved a deficit budget for 2020 –we are predicting expenses to exceed anticipated income by $10,200. Of course this can change over the course of the year with the church receiving extra giving and/or expenses coming in under budgeted amounts. If you are interested in seeing the detail in any of the categories from the chart, please contact me and I can give you the full report (it is 5 pages which is why just the totals are reported here). Our Finance Committee meets each month to review the finance reports and be proactive in any areas of concern, if needed. If you have not made a 2020 pledge commitment, it is never too late! Pledge cards are available in both Welcome Centers. The work of the church could not go on without the consistent, generous gifts of God's people through tithes and offerings. May we all be faithful to the Lord in 2020 in our time, our talent, and our resources. Thank you for all that you do to support Asbury and our work for Christ. Janice Ilczuk, Director of Finance & Building

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” What a powerful scripture, and an awesome reminder that nothing can separate us from the LOVE of GOD. January 10-12, 23 people from Asbury attended Youth Rally in

Ocean City. The theme was “Inseparable” and the time was blessed, regardless how little sleep we got. We say these trips are for the youth, but I think they impact the adults just as much. At Youth Rally, we were all reminded that age is just a number. We were told God is calling all of us (young and old) to do great things because God is guiding us all and HIS LOVE IS INSEPARABLE… Leah Tatman, Director of Youth & Family

What’s Coming in February?

I am planning a Movie Night for Youth and Family. I plan to show the movie, “Overcomer.” This movie was released in theaters in April, 2019. The movie themes include identity in Christ and forgiveness. These are things we all work through as followers of Christ. I would like to invite families to come and watch the movie then share in a discussion afterward focused on those themes. The date and details about this event will follow soon, and Youth Group that week will be the same night as movie night. -Leah

As you may know, Asbury hosts a big, fun, 5-evening-long Vacation Bible School each July. It is the highlight of my year watching our faithful volunteers come together to transform the church with jaw-dropping decorations, and then fill the hearts of children from Asbury and the community with the stories of the Bible and the love of Jesus. Last Fall, I was honored to be asked to be part of the consultant team for the 2020 theme! As part of this task, I took surveys about potential theme ideas, and I received draft copies of the curriculum to review and offer editing and content suggestions.

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break and are ready to begin a brand new year! Our Holiday Music Program was quite a success! We are so very proud of our little performers and their enthusiasm! We also want to acknowledge the hard work of our teachers and staff! They brought such wonderful holiday cheer to each and every one of us! ACDC is starting to plan for next year’s registration, which will take place for current students and their siblings on Wednesday, February 12th at 9AM. Member Registration - AUMC members may register their child the week before priority registration (Feb. 3rd-Feb. 7th). Open registration will take place on March 11th at 9AM. Registration materials for the 2020-2021 school year can be picked in the Resource Room #121. If you have additional questions do not hesitate to contact anyone in the office. Thank you! Casey Taylor, Director of ACDC

In the past, photos from our VBS have even been featured on the Cokesbury Facebook page! I was even required to sign a statement saying that I would keep the theme top-secret, which was a tricky task! Since it is no longer a secret, I am now able to announce that the theme for Cokesbury's 2020 Vacation Bible School is “The Knights of North Castle: Quest for the King's Armor.” Mark your calendars for Sun -Thurs, July 12-16, 2020! Lots of help will be needed to transform the church into a castle, and help the kids put on the armor of God! More information to come!

Dear co-workers in Christ, February's congregational spiritual practices are SILENCE and SOLITUDE (they go together). How much silence is in your day, week, and overall life? It is said by Saint John of the Cross that silence is God's first language. How much time do you spend completely alone? To look at silence from another perspective--how much noise infiltrates your day and your life? You may not be able to accurately answer that until you incorporate intentional silence into your waking hours. Now, noise can be actual noise--like the TV, radio, people (including you) talking, traffic, etc. But "noise" is also being glued to our phones/the internet, constantly scrolling or texting, busyness, the demands of others, even reading (gasp) can become noise if it is distracting us from the silence in which we can hear God best. Solitude goes hand and hand with silence. In Celebration of Discipline Richard Foster has these nuggets to say about the topic: "Without silence there is no solitude. Though silence sometimes involves the absence of speech, it always involves the act of listening."

"Our fear of being alone drives us to noise and crowds.....We can cultivate an inner solitude and silence that sets us free from loneliness and fear. Loneliness is inner emptiness. Solitude is inner fulfillment."

Page 11: American Spiritual Ensemble the ASBURIAN...Fox Room The Bible 101 Class started a new study of The Gospel of Matthew on January 5, 2020. We meet in the Fox Room each Sunday at 10:00

11

[Cont’d from previous ]

"The purpose of silence and solitude is to be able to see and hear. Control rather than no noise is the key to silence....Under the discipline of silence and solitude we learn when to speak and when to refrain from speaking [in everyday life]." "One reason we can hardly bear to remain silent is that it makes us feel so helpless. We are so accustomed to relying upon words to control others. If we are silent who will take control? God will take control, but we never let him take control until we trust him. Silence is intimately related to trust." "The tongue is our most powerful weapon of manipulation. We fear so deeply what others think we talk in order to straighten out their understanding. Silence is one of the deepest disciplines of the Spirit because it puts a stopper on all self-justification." "The fruit of solitude is increased sensitivity and compassion for others." Steps to solitude: 1. Take advantage of "little" solitudes” that fill your day, e.g., when we first wake up, in the car--and if not alone, play the quiet game with others for a short time for a little silence. 2. Find or develop a "quiet place" in or around your home that signals to people in your household that when you are there, you want to be alone. Experiments in silence: 1. “Observe how often your speech is a frantic attempt to explain and justify actions.” Experiment with doing deeds without any words of explanation whatsoever. 2. "Maintain plain speech: do what we say we will do." 3. "Try to live one entire day without words." 4. Set a timer to sit in silence. You can pray, reflect, think, or simply sit. If silence is new to you, start with 2 minutes and increase the time little by little each session as you feel ready. Setting a timer alleviates the tendency to see how much time is left. Also, have a piece of paper near you to jot down any thoughts that come that you don't want to forget. This helps you to let that thought go. 5. The practice of silence can aid us in how we use words in our lives. Think about these experiments from Jan Johnson's book Abundant Simplicity: a) For a select amount of time, refrain from giving your opinion or advice unless you are asked (ouch, right?). b) pray to become the kind of person whose talk demonstrates the Spirit’s power instead of clever eloquence. c) Answer yes or no questions with “yes” or “no” and listen to what happens inside. d) Consider abstaining from one certain speech pattern that you employ regularly, e.g., interrupting, talking over others, yelling at other drivers (instead say “bless you”), telling others what you “know”, etc. Pay attention to what goes on inside of you immediately afterward. Questions? Contact Kristen at [email protected] or 410-749-2131.

Faith Friends, Here is a pertinent piece for all of us as we continue on in 2020 from Director of Communications for Renovare, Brian Morykon: Dallas Willard’s famous acronym for the general pattern of personal transformation is VIM: Vision, Intension, Means. Vision and means are easy to explain—a picture of what life can be like and the steps by which one moves toward that life. Intention can be trickier to communicate. The phrase “good intentions” can even have a negative connotation. We all know which road is paved with those. But what if the road to life is paved with good intentions? Robust, grace-filled, firmly-rooted-in-Jesus intentions. Intention is the vital link between vision and means. One can imagine the benefits of playing violin and have the money, time, and resources with which to learn it. But unless a choice is made to move forward, nothing happens. No one drifts their way into playing Bach. “We do not take the spiritual life seriously,” writes Henri Nouwen, “if we do not set aside some time to be with God and listen to him." He goes on: “We may have to write it in black and white in our daily calendar so that nobody else can take away this period of time. Then we will be able to say to our friends, neighbors, students, customers, clients, or patients, ‘I’m sorry, but I’ve already made an appointment at that time and it can’t be changed.’” Intention in the spiritual life can be a gritted-teeth affair. What prevents this is a clear vision that life with God—every moment of life—is better than life without God. I’m pausing now to compare the days I’ve forgotten God and the days I’ve started and stayed with God. The latter is the life I want. Resolutions get broken quickly, it’s true. But we can intend to seek renewal in Jesus and take a simple, tangible step toward it today—like calling a local retreat center and booking a day to rest and pray. Kristen Wall-Love, Director of Adult Spiritual Formation & Membership

Mark your calendar for February 2 for your chance to participate in Asbury’s Souper Bowl as on that date we will again be collecting food for the Food Pantry at Salisbury Urban Ministries. This is especially important at this time of year as their food has been depleted during the Christmas holidays.

If you did not pick up a bag on January 26, use your own bag, filled with non-perishable foods, and bring it to church on Souper Bowl Sunday. If you miss this, you can bring food at any time and leave it in the church office. Thanks for your generosity.

Ricky is a combat wounded veteran living in Leslie County, KY. He came home with a Purple Heart, but part of Ricky remains in Iraq. A few years ago, his house burned down, and he was forced to move into a used

trailer. For the past two years, he has struggled to heat the drafty trailer in the winter, and he has had neither a working bathroom nor hot water. Two of your ASP teams spent their week with Ricky, coming to love him while they worked both inside and outside his trailer to rebuild flooring and insulate and seal his walls. In addition to their hard work, through the generous financial support of you, the congregation of Asbury, our group was able to purchase a water heater and pay for a plumber to connect it and get his bathroom in working order. Now Ricky has a warmer, safer, drier home, and he can take a hot shower. Beyond that, Ricky knows that God loves him enough to send His children to love and help him. The new year has begun, and with it your ASP team’s preparations for our annual mission trip have shifted into top gear. This year, we will be traveling to Virginia June 20-28. The theme for the year is “Complete, but not Finished”, based on Philippians 1:6: I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. This is a great theme and scripture for the ASP mission, as we are complete and perfect in God’s eyes, but God is not finished with us. As long as we draw breath, He has work and blessings for us!

As in past years, each of our team members is required to raise $350 in individual sponsorships, in addition to the group fundraising that we do through pancake breakfasts, fall flower sales, etc. Everyone is required to turn in this minimum amount by the February 9 pancake breakfast. We also continue to serve dinner at the Christian Shelter each first Sunday of the month, and we have three wheelchair ramp builds upcoming in the Spring.

Thank you, Asbury, for your continued enthusiastic support of this vital ministry. For additional information, do not hesitate to contact me.
