BOOK REVIEWJOSIAH for President

I must say, when I picked up this book I thought it sounded a bit silly - An Amish man for president? Where could this story possibly go? But it was an unexpected, genuine page-turner.

When former Congressman, Mark Stedman removes himself from the presidential election, he decides to pack it up and head home. God literally puts a detour in his path, sending him and his car through the back-country roads of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Distracted with his GPS’ loss of signal, he crashes his car in a ditch. With an inability to call for help, Mark finds himself lost on a narrow road less traveled - but God had a plan adding this detour to Mark’s life.

Josiah Stoltzfus, an Amish farmer, stumbles unto Mark and his wrecked vehicle and immediately assists him in pulling his car out of the ditch with his horses. While waiting for a part on the car to be fixed, Mark ends up spending some quality time with the Stoltzfus family. Filled with lots of common sense and Amish advice, Mark leaves Pennsylvania uplifted and questioning God’s will in his own life.

After the short, unexpected Amish adventure, Mark decides that his encounter was more than mere chance. Mark decides to enter Josiah in the presidential election. Josiah was a breath of fresh air and common sense when he needed it, why couldn’t he do the same for America? Can Josiah be the first write-in candidate for President? Is America ready to trust a Plain man to lead the country?

Bolton does a great job describing the Amish culture and it’s relation to the campaign trail. With lots of laugh-out-loud one liners, this book was not only a great story but also uplifting, encouraging the

readers to follow their heart and always do what is right.

“Josiah for President” is coming to the Ohio Star Theater at Dutch Valley in Sugarcreek as a new hit musical (see page 34). I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on a ticket and see this show! What I thought was going to be a “silly” book has become one of my favorite Amish Fiction stories so far! Make sure you get a copy and read it before enjoying the show.

he squeak of the plastic and the click of the tabs on a container of Troyer’s Home Pantry Cinnamon Rolls is sure to get your taste buds excited. If you’ve

ever had the pleasure of eating treats from the family owned bakery, located in Apple Creek, Ohio then you know what is coming – a delicious fluffy pastry with golden brown tops and frosting that sticks to your fingers and brings a smile to your face.

Owner Paul Troyer, who is a co-owner and partner in the business along with his three sons (Brandon, Ryan and Jordan), has seen the joy that baked goods could bring first hand. It all started when he began working

with his mother, Sarah in the kitchen during his teen years. Troyer’s Home Pantry products are made with Sarah Troyer’s recipes and when the business first began she was able to consult and make adjustments, a skill that Paul says his sons have inherited.

While Sarah is no longer with us, her family legacy has been a part of Wayne County for many years with her rolls starting the day at breakfast tables and bringing the family together at holiday dinners with pies, angel food cakes and cookies.

In recent years, Troyer’s Home Pantry has grown its distribution reach beyond Wayne County and now their products are being sold as far north as Toledo and as

far south as Pataskala. When Paul is out exploring the state and looking at different opportunities he uses his intuition and asks the right questions to see if an area would be the right fit for Troyer’s Home Pantry products. The store now carries locally produced maple syrup and honey bottled in Amish Country among some of the additional products at the retail store in Apple Creek.

“We just stared selling our products at the Lynd Fruit Farm in Pataskala this year,” said Paul. “Their order is growing nicely each month and we’re excited to be moving out further, towards the Columbus area. Over the years you develop a sense of where the product is going to work, the store, the people they serve, the setting, all of it factors in.”

The two main retail stores for Troyer’s are in Apple Creek on West Main Street and in Wooster on East North Street. Known as “The Best Place To Buy A Pie,” you’ll also find Troyer’s Home Pantry products in local BellStores and Buehler’s Fresh Foods grocery stores. Paul has noticed an odd phenomenon in that the BellStores closest to the retail location are often the ones that sell out of his products the fastest. Although, knowing that most of the people stopping at those stations probably are seeking out the cinnamon rolls they’ve grown up loving, it’s not such an odd phenomenon after all.

On an average day, the bakery will put out about 800 pies. During the busier holiday seasons it could be anywhere from 1,100 pies per day to 1,300. The pies are baked in two shifts and cinnamon rolls are done at night. Baking is going on from 7 a.m. to midnight every day and the flour and sugar deliveries come through each Thursday morning. Other products like breads, cakes and cookies are baked fresh during the day.

The retail stores are a favorite spot for locals. On any given morning you’ll see people stopping in to pick up treats on their way to work, a husband and wife sitting and enjoying a roll or a doughnut with their cup of New England Coffee or some grandkids sporting chocolate milk mustaches as they kick their feet and look up from a piece of roll or pie. The retail stores often donate pies for local community events and fund raisers and are always looking for ways to partner with surrounding businesses and reach out to help others.

Troyer’s Home Pantry is a rarity, now being run with the third generation as part of the family business. “I couldn’t do it without my

sons,” adds Paul. “I know for years my dad did so much of the day-to-day operations by himself and it was challenging. I’m grateful to have my sons as partners.”

There have been the occasional customers looking for pies to have at their wedding or even wanting to make an entire wedding cake out of Troyer’s Glazed Doughnuts, which the store gladly supplies. This is a testament to the enduring and ever-changing way that people enjoy Troyer’s Home Pantry goods. Customers at the retail store in Apple Creek can now access the internet with free wifi. Travelers through Amish Country know the store as a great spot to take a break, stretch your legs and check the map on the wall to see where you’re heading to next.

So whether you are picking up a pastry while you’re out on the road or taking the time to savor it while you read the morning paper and sip your coffee at the table, you know that the product you have is thought out and made with care. Nothing fancy, just delicious.

STEWARDS OF THE FOREST

Mohawk Lumber, in Apple Creek, Ohio, is just one of the many local lumber mills focused on sustainability and stewardship

when it comes to harvesting lumber for their mill. Hardwoods are harvested from the Appalachian region in Ohio and mostly harvested within a 120-mile radius, promoting locally grown hardwoods.

“We use selective harvesting,” said Marvin Yoder, of Mohawk Lumber, explaining that the crew comes up with a plan for harvest that is tailored to each individual landowners needs.

“We harvest from private landowners – primarily farmers,” said Yoder. “Farmers may want to clean up a certain area of their land. We go in and assess the trees and ask the landowner, ‘what do you want us to do?’”

The goal is to do what is good for the forest and leave the land in better shape than when they first got to it. This could mean removing diseased and dead trees and sometimes cutting down larger trees that block the sunlight for the younger, smaller trees. “We are stewards of the forest,” said Yoder.

Once the logs are cut, they are loaded up onto trucks and brought back to the mill. The logs are then cut to length and dried for six months or more. “Lumber has a high moisture content,” explained Yoder.

When a log is brought into the mill, it yields a moisture content of around 30-40 percent. This percentage needs to reflect more of a 6-10 percent range to be usable in the furniture/hardwood industry. “From the time [the lumber] leaves the forest and goes through the lumber yard, the process can take close to a year to get to the buyer,” explained Yoder.

When a log is cut, certain parts of that log are in higher demand. The logs are cut into different

thicknesses and different grades depending on the customer needs. A high grade, with a better grain is typically demanded in the furniture industry. Lower grades are typically used in the pallet industry (for shipping and transportation of goods).

Nothing gets wasted in the lumber business. Bark scraps can be sold to landscapers and the sawdust can be sold to farmers, etc.

“We are a small-medium sized operation,” said Yoder. “We are small enough to cater to people’s needs.” Like many other small, family-owned businesses in the area, it’s all about building relationships – whether those relationships are with the landowners or customers.

Ingredients:*Boneless, skinless chicken breasts (whatever amount you need)*1 (2.5 oz.) package dried beef, rinsed off (so it’s not so salty)*8 slices bacon, fried and crumbled*1 can cream of chicken soup*1 c. sour cream

Directions:Put the dried beef on bottom

of a crock pot. Then layer chicken on next, then bacon. Mix soup and sour cream and spread on top. Cook in crock pot for 6 hours on low, stirring after 3 hours, (if you are at home).

Ingredients:*4 eggs*4 Tbsp. sugar*4 Tbsp. flour*2 cans creamed corn (can use 2 cans regular corn and 1 can creamed)*1 can whole corn (drained)*Salt and pepper to taste*1 cup milk*4 Tbsp. melted margarine or butter

Directions:In large bowl beat eggs, (mix sugar and flour together)

and whisk into eggs. Add all the other ingredients except the margarine. Pour into a buttered casserole dish or oblong pan and drizzle the melted margarine or butter over the top. Bake uncovered at 350 for 45 min to 1 hr. Should be lightly browned on top. You can insert a knife into the center, if it comes out clean it’s done. Enjoy.

Ingredients:*1/4 C. Cocoa*1 C. hot water*3/4 C. butter softened*2 1/2 C. flour*1 t. baking soda*1/2 t. salt*2 C. sugar*2 eggs*1/2 C. buttermilk or thick sour milk*1 tsp. vanilla*1 C. chopped nuts

Directions:1. Mix cocoa in hot water, stir in butter

and allow to cool. Sift dry ingredients together and stir in cocoa mixture. Mix in eggs. Add buttermilk, vanilla and nuts.

2. Spread on buttered cookie sheet or jelly roll pan (10x15) and bake at 375° for 20-25 minutes.

3. Frost with icing of cocoa and powdered sugar (equal amounts of each, a few drops of water, 2 T. of soft butter.) You can sprinkle with nuts or omit frosting and dust with powdered sugar.

If you are up for the drive, set your GPS north east of the Amish Heartland and check out an animal sanctuary

that is dedicated to rehabilitating abused, neglected or abandoned farm animals. It all started with a dream of Annette Fishers, executive director, to have a horse of her own. She had no idea her love for animals would get her more than just one horse.

Fisher had watched and cared for a neighbor’s horses (on the property that is now Happy Trails) and discovered the family had a crippled pig, Janice, on their farm. Instead of being paid for her “babysitting” services, Fisher asked if she could have the pig.

To her surprise, the family allowed her to take the pig and Fisher helped Janice to live out her life in the best way possible. Fisher and her husband soon obtained the 10-acre farm and quickly setout to care for as many farm animals as they could. Today you will find barns full of happy pigs, chickens, cows, horses and much more as they continue on the road to recovery.

Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary, Inc. is a non-profit (501c3) organization that rescues and rehabilitates farm animals such as: horses, ponies, pot belly pigs, farm pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, sheep, goats, and cattle. Law officials must remove animals brought to Happy Trails from a situation of abuse, neglect or abandonment, and cruelty charges must be filed against those responsible for the crime.

Happy Trails takes in these animals and provides them with the proper medical care, proper nutrition, clean and safe housing and as much “TLC” as possible. An adoption program allows for rescued farm animals to be adopted to families as pets to live out the rest of their lives. (An application process is required as well as an on-site visit to the animals future home to be sure the adopted animal will receive proper care.)

“We rescue animals from anywhere in the state of Ohio,” said Hope Evans, Marketing and Special Promotions for Happy Trails. “We have even rescued animals from as far away as New York and California.”

An adoption program has even been set-up for retired Amish work horses. There comes a time in an Amish horses life when he or she simply becomes to old to perform their duties on the farm or pull a buggy

full of Amish familiy members. Happy Trails is happy to work with Amish farmers in taking in these horses and giving them a place to live out the rest of their years. This makes it easier on the Amish farmer who may have had to take his horse to auction or try and find a way to re-home the horse.

From May through October, guests can tour Happy Trails and learn about each of the animals that have come to live at Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary. Educational tours run Friday through Saturday with four available tour time slots per day. Each tour includes up to six people and one tour guide, who takes time to share the stories of how each animal came to live at Happy Trails.

It’s your opportunity to get up-close and personal with the animals; scratch the nose of a curious sheep, rub the

belly of a grateful pig and most importantly, learn how you could make a difference in the lives of an animal. Admission: $20 for adults, $10

Happy Trails relies on the donations of supporters and funding from visitors to the sanctuary. Evans said, the local community was very supportive in pitching in to rebuild a barn after one of their goat barns caught fire. Happy Trails occasionally receives grants for specific projects on the farm.

Some people enjoy donating feed to help out the animals. When visiting Happy Trails’ website, visit the

“Wish List” section and learn what types of healthy snacks and food that the animals enjoy.
