Annual GIANT Used Book SALE

With the help of generous community donors and many hardworking members of the FRIENDS Board, and the MPL Teen Club, we fi lled the library coffers with $2951.50 from the annual December used book sale. Our standout book women were Jerry Giaconoma and Anne Ylvisakekr who not only worked Friday, but a Saturday shift too.

While the Monterey Conference Center is undergo-ing its major renovation, the Big Sur International Marathon Expo will be held at the Custom House Plaza April 22 & 23. We need a coordinator to sign up volunteers to staff the information booth. We want to keep this very important relationship. We receive a grant for our volunteer hours. If you are interested in this role with working with BSIM, please contact Claire Rygg [email protected]

David AstorBy Jeremy Lewis

David Astor edited the Observer from 1948 until 1975 and was the voice of Britain’s Liberal consensus. One signifi cant difference between Astor and most Fleet Street editors was his inherited wealth. His contribution to history was his campaign for social liberalism yjsy has affected the way Britain lives and thinks —Jean O’Brien, FRIENDS Board Member

From the Director

What are the Library’s goals in the coming months? In January 2016 the Library Board of Trustees approved a new set of Strategic Priorities to take us through to 2017. The plan includes familiar initiatives, such as “children’s

programs that promote early literacy and reading readiness” and new efforts such as converting a staff offi ce into a classroom so that we can offer free computer classes and other group instruction. To read the plan in full, visit

http://www.monterey.org/library/About-Us/Strategic-Priorities

Catch me in the stacks to learn more or, better yet, let me take you to coffee! Thanks to the tremendous support of the FRIENDS and the City’s Neighbor-hood Improvement Program, a kitchen addition is under construction on the back patio of the library. We hope to have the kitchen up and running later this Spring!

Inga Waite has been appointed by the board to be our full-time, permanent Library Director effective April 1, 2016. Inga has been with the library for 13 years, starting as a Reference Supervisor and eventually becoming the acting Assistant Library Director in 2013. In September 2015 Inga became the Interim Library Director, doing an outstanding job running the library during a time of transition, with staff reorganization, new staff members, and projects such as the new kitchen addition. We are looking forward to a bright future for the library under Inga’s leadership. Congratulations from the board to the FRIENDS for a well-attended, very successful event, the Chocolate and Wine fundraiser. All the board members attended, helped out, and partook of the goodies. Well done! Our new Youth Services Librarian, Dayna Armstrong, joined us on February 2. She previously worked at the Monterey County Free Library System where she served as the Branch Manager of the Aromas

Branch, providing outreach to local elementary and preschools, and creating programming for children and young adults. Dayna holds an MLIS from San Jose State, and has a BA in English, Single Subject Teaching from San Jose as well. She is already providing weekly Toddler and Preschool Storytimes, running the weekly math club Crazy 8’s, our semimonthly Baby programs, our monthly Lego Club, and Pajama Storytime. As part of the “Explore Monterey Call Phone Tours” audio tour program, four segments describing different aspects of the history of the Monterey Public Library have been added. To access these, dial 831-718-9123, and then enter 800, 810, 820 or 830. The Monterey Library Board usually meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the library’s community room, and members of the public are welcome to attend. Agendas are available through the I-Search Monterey website.
