Bill and Beth Howard Celebrate 30th Anniversary In Hawaii It was a 15 day trip on thee island that fulfilled another accomplishment – visiting all 50 states! They began their trip on the

Big Island of Hawaii. Of the exciting adventures on this island was Volcano National Park where they saw Kilauea Caldera. The did hiking and exploring and actually walked through an old lava tube. Bill is a real orchid enthusiast and enjoyed Akatasu Orchid Gardens. After five days, they flew to Kauai, the Garden Isle having lush and beautiful flowers everywhere! Continued to see waterfalls, botanical gardens, Hanalei Bay (where South Pacific was filmed) and picturesque Kilauea Lighthouse. Their highlight was a Napali Coast Snorkel trip on a 65 ft catamaran! The final stop was Waikiki on Oahu and stayed a Hale Koa that is the hotel for military, DOD and those retired. Pearl Harbor the highlight on Oahu. It was a very moving experience. They traveled to the North Shore to

see the big waves and a surfing competition. They climbed Diamond Head and snorkeled in Hanauma Bay. The attended a luau to celebration their 30th Anniversary. They truly enjoyed Hawaii and plan to return!

Remember the Alamo! Ralph & Patty Mayer’s Trip to San Antonio Texas The Mayer’s toured the Alamo where William Travis, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett died fighting for freedom. But

the San Antonio River Walk was on Patty’s “Bucket List” that is now checked! The River Walk (2.2 miles) is a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River that winds and loops under bridges with two parallel sidewalks lined with restaurants, waterfalls, bars, shops, hotels, convention center, and other tourist attractions. Another adventure was the San Antonio Museum of Art. They were amazed at the comprehensive collections housed in the museum. Floral displays at the 33-acre living museum of the San Antonio Botanical Gardens housed exotic plant specimens from around the world. They attended a “Tamale Festival” on the ground of the former Pearl Brewery. The local CIA (Culinary Institute of America) prepared a variety of food. Mariachi bands provided musical entertainment. Locals have shopped at “Market Square” since 1820 and so did Ralph and Patty where they were entertained by children performing traditional Mexican dances. They clapped their hands in time with the music of the Mexican Had Dance. Today it is the largest Mexican market in the USA. Visiting the San Jose’ mission, known as the “Queens of Missions”. It is almost fully restored to the design of 1930. Spanish missions were not churches, but communities, with the church focus with four important factors – the people, the church, farming, and ranching. On to the next item on the “Bucket List”!

Send your excursions and outings to Ralph Mayer (see page 9) and be included on the AMS web page and in the next AMS News.

I N R E M E M B R A N C E Josephine Pastore Bizzoco of Dagsboro, formerly of Glen Echo Heights, MD, died Saturday April 27 of complications resulting from pneumonia, in Atlantic Shores care facility, Millsboro, DE. She was 94. Her late husband Felix F. Bizzoco precedes her in death. She met her husband in 1940 and they were married in 1944 just prior to his being sent to the Philippines as part of the Philippine Liberation Army. Upon his return to the US, they settled in Washington, DC, where they lived until their retirement in 1979. She is survived by her children Francis (Frank) Bizzoco and Susan (Sue) Quintana and grandchildren. Frederick J. Doyle a photographic mapping specialist whose work included space photography for NASA, photo reconnaissance from spy satellites and high-resolution photographs of the Earth’s surface from outer space, died April 17 at his home in McLean. He was 93. He had congestive heart failure. In 1969, Mr. Doyle became chairman of NASA’s Apollo Orbital Science Photographic Team, and he planned the camera systems and directed orbital science photography for Apollo lunar missions 13 through 17. His efforts resulted in full-scale lunar maps, including the “mountains of the moon.” In 1971, Mr. Doyle received NASA’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal for development of the Apollo orbital photographic system. He later directed photography projects on Mariner and Viking missions to Mars, Venus and Mercury. Mr. Doyle was the principal investigator on the Landsat satellites, which for 40 years have taken continuous photographs of the Earth’s surface, allowing scientists to observe planetary phenomena such as deforestation and changes in vegetation. He was also principal investigator on Skylab, the first U.S. space station. He was instrumental in promoting the large-format high-resolution camera first used in an October 1984 space shuttle mission, which produced more than 2,000 photos for the world’s mapping community. Mr. Doyle began his career as a space scientist in 1954 as leader of an Air Force expedition to observe a solar eclipse in the Labrador region of Canada. In 1955, he led a similar expedition to Vietnam. He came to Washington in 1960 to do research on classified satellite reconnaissance photographic systems for government agencies. From these spy satellites, the government could gather photographic data from countries where flyovers by U.S. aircraft were prohibited. He retired in 1990 as a scientific adviser for cartography at the U.S. Geological Survey after 23 years with the agency, but for much of that time he had been on loan to NASA. While at USGS,

he was an adjunct professor of photogrammetry at George Washington University and Virginia Tech. Frederick Joseph Doyle was born April 3, 1920, in Oak Park, Ill. He began his mapping career during World War II with an Army Air Forces unit on Guam, where he prepared target-approach and damage assessment charts for B-29 bombing raids. Later, he was assigned to a geodetic survey unit in Central and South America, and in 1946 was one of two survivors of an airplane crash in the Andes Mountains between Chile and Argentina. For 12 hours, he waited on a mountaintop before a rescue party could reach him, and he was carried down the mountain, having suffered a broken femur and other injuries. After being hospitalized for 18 months, he entered Syracuse University, from which he graduated summa cum laude in 1951. He then studied for a year on a Fulbright fellowship at the International Training Center for Aerial Survey in Delft, Netherlands. He joined the faculty at Ohio State University in 1954 and later became the first chairman of a new department of geodetic sciences. His avocations included model railroads, and he had an extensive collection of trains and tracks in the basement of his home. Mr. Doyle was a former president of the parish council and director of the lector ministry at St. John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church in McLean, and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Survivors include his wife, Mary Blaskovich Doyle of McLean; four children, Frederick J. Doyle Jr. of Evergreen, Colo., Margaret Grant of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Mary Ellen Slattery of Annandale, and George Doyle of Vienna; two brothers; a sister; and 10 grandchildren. Michael A. Iacona, Sr., CAPT USNR-R (Ret), passed away peacefully in Annapolis, Maryland from complications of pneumonia. Michael "Mike" Iacona, Sr. was born in Providence, RI. Mike's dreams of attending the United States Naval Academy began with a letter to a state senator when he was only 10 years old. He graduated from LaSalle Academy in Providence, enlisted in the Navy and received an appointment to the Naval Academy in 1947. He studied engineering, raced sailboats and played trombone. He served in the Korean War. Mike’s first assignment was aboard the Bon Homme Richard aircraft carrier, then the USS Guavina through June 1956 and assigned as Navigator/and Operations Officer to the USS CALOOSAHATCHEE, 1958 - 60 and as the operations officer assigned to the

He served in the Naval Reserves and retired as Captain. He went on an expedition cruise to Uruguay during the Falkland War. He also participated in a geographical study to re-define the Mason Dixon line. He taught at local colleges in Maryland and Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife Charlotte of 62 years, his children Michael, Rosemarie, Janice, David, and grandchildren. Harry B. “Mac” McKenzie, 96, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2013 in Frederick, MD. Harry, known as Mutt during his youth, was born on March 5, 1917 in Meyersdale, PA. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years Lillian Marion Yates and is survived by his two children Bruce (McLean, VA) and Kathryn Ann (Frederick, MD), and granddaughters. “Mac” was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. The 660th was the first full American topographical engineering unit shipped to the United Kingdom, arriving September 6, 1942 (via the Queen Mary, converted to a troopship for the War). Their mission was to prepare the maps necessary for Operation Overlord, the June 6, 1944 Allied assault on Normandy. Following the D-Day Invasion, the 660th turned its attention on mapping the push through France and across the Rhine into Germany. With the liberation of Paris, the 660th relocated its mapping operations to Paris where they focused on mapping Bavaria, and northern Austria. During the course of their stay in England, the Topographic Engineers also had time to show-off their baseball skills. They were league champions of London’s International Baseball League - a highly competitive eight-team circuit consisting of five U.S. Army teams, two Canadian military clubs and a British civilian squad. After the War, Mac accepted a cartographer position with the U.S. Army Map Service in Brookmont, MD. His mapping career spanned 37 years of service; he was involved in mapping the Moon!
