Diesel trucks and passenger cars are popular for a variety ofreasons, but primarily for the way the engine delivers power.Gasoline engines deliver power at higher rpm; anyone whoever burned rubber in a muscle car knows that you rev it upbefore you pop the clutch. Diesel engines, on the other hand,deliver their power almost at idle. As a result, diesels operate atlower engine rpm and higher torque. AMSOIL AUTOMATICTRANSMISSION FLUIDEARNS PRAISE

Dealer Greg Norman of Cheyenne,Wyo. has used and sold AMSOILproducts for 34 years. He knows theirquality, and he likes to spread the word.

He owns a 1994 Ford Taurus thathe loves to brag about. The car hasabout 185,000 miles on the originaltransmission.

“In December, I changed thesaid. “The inside of the transmission

was very clean, with no signs of anydeposits or discoloration. There was just a bit of metal ‘dust’ on the magnetattached to the transmission pan. Thetransmission shifts well with no sign ofany problems.”

He bought the car in 1995 when ithad about 19,000 miles, and didnot start using AMSOIL AutomaticTransmission Fluid until the car hadabout 60,000 miles on the engine. “Ido not drain the entire transmissionand torque converter,” Norman said.

“I just drop the transmission pan,which allows me to drain about halfis the fourth time I have repeated thisprocedure with this particular car.”

The older Taurus models were“infamous for their poor transmissions,which almost always failed before thecars had 100,000 miles,” Normansaid. “Our local Midas Dealer, NickDodgson, has a radio show everyweek discussing automotive issues. I

called in to his show to brag about myTaurus, which had not experienced anytransmission problems, and attributedthis to the use of AMSOIL ATF.”

Dodgson was amazed. He likes to tellhis listeners the Ford Taurus helpedhim get established in the automobilerepair business early in his career.

“He says it wasn’t a question of whatmake of car was being towed into hisshop for transmission repair, just what

color Taurus was being dropped off,”Norman said.

Norman relies on other AMSOILproducts to keep his Taurus reliable.“I have used 0W-30 Signature Seriessince it was introduced,” he said. “Idrive the car every day and dependon AMSOIL products to keep itrunning with no major repair costs forthe engine and transmission.”

In 2011, the average cost of a newvehicle increased to almost $30,000,and the average cost of gasoline roseto $3.52 per gallon, up from $2.78 pergallon in 2010 and $2.35 per gallon in2009. Considering the sharp increasein the cost of ownership, it’s nowonder people are hanging onto theirvehicles longer than they have in thepast. According to Consumer Reports ,the average vehicle age in 2008 wasvehicles on the road is nine years.As more people look to keep theirvehicles longer, more of them learnthat, without proper maintenance,vehicles might not last as long asthey’d like. It is up to drivers to protecttheir investments.

There is little more detrimental toyour vehicle’s engine than wear,line of defense. Numerous factorscontribute to engine wear, but allcan be categorized as one of thefollowing four basic wear mechanisms:abrasive, corrosive, adhesive andfatigue.

Abrasive wear is caused by foreignparticles entering the engine, mostcommonly soot and dirt. Once insidethe engine these particles becometrapped between moving parts – thepiston and cylinder, for example – andgrind against their metal surfaces.Wear particles act as sandpaper,continuously rubbing and wearingaway metal surfaces by rupturingparts, resulting in particle-to-metalcontact. This contact creates friction

Abrasive wear commonly occurs whendirt or other contaminants enter theengine through the air intake system.These contaminants cause excessivewear on rings, pistons and cylinders.Increased cylinder and ring wearcan cause blow-by, which decreasescompression and causes loss ofcan help prevent abrasive wear byblocking contaminants that wouldtheir way into the system.

Corrosive wear is the result ofrubbing action on a metal surfacein conjunction with chemicalattack. Combustion byproductsintroduce acids into the oil sump.If unaddressed, these acids can

build up in the system and oxidize orcorrode the surface of sensitive areas,including lead- and copper-linedbearings and other soft yellow-metalsurfaces. As the surfaces begin tocorrode, pieces of oxidized metalbreak free and become wear particlesin the system.

The most commonly recognizedmechanism is adhesive wear, whichoccurs when metal surfaces comein contact under conditions of highload, speed or temperature. Surfaceirregularities, called asperities, touchand weld momentarily, then break offas the surfaces separate. The loadapplied to the two points of contactis so high that they bend and adhereto one another. Rough metal sur faceswith larger microscopic hills andvalleys are more susceptib le to thistype of wear. Adhesive wear can result

Fatigue wear originates from situationsbut recurring stress like vibration orshock-loading causes cracks or pitsover time. This is a common typeof wear found in equipment thatfrequently starts and stops or changesspeeds. Fatigue wear can developin rolling element bearings as theypass over a stressed area repeatedlyand, ultimately, develop cracks thatrelease small bits of metal over time,leaving holes or pits in the surface.These holes or pits grow and connect,resulting in large losses of surfacemetal and catastrophic damage.

Regardless of equipment type,bearings, gears and cylinders aresusceptible to wear, and thus require

high-quality lubricant protection.Choosing the proper viscosity foryour oil will aid in wear protection byreducing the likelihood of metal-to-metal contact. A full-synthetic base oilprovides a naturally higher viscosityindex for improved shear stab ility,again helping to reduce wear bystrength is also a key wear-protectionprovides a lubricant barrier betweenmoving parts, ensuring friction isgreatly reduced.

While AMSOIL pioneered the con-cept of extended drain intervals in1972, the automotive industry andcompeting motor oil companieshave only recently climbed on-board. There’s no denying the once-standard 3,000-mile oil changeis steadily fading away. Vehiclemanufacturers have been gradu-ally increasing their recommendeddrain intervals, and increasing useof oil life monitors has also pushed

intervals well beyond 3,000 miles.

Customers have taken advantage; datashows they are driving longer between oilchanges. According to the NPD Group’sAftermarket Outlook Survey, the percent-

age of vehicle owners who believe oilshould be changed every 3,000 miles is51 percent, down from 59 percent in 2007.The National Oil & Lube News (NOLN) Fast-ers are steadily increasing their drainintervals, indicating a 7 percent increase inaverage oil change interval over the pastsix years.

According to NOLN research, manufacturer-recommended drain intervals have changeddramatically over the past six years, withmany recommending longer intervals.

FORD

Six years ago, most vehicles had 3,000-mile recommended drain intervals for “spe-cial operating conditions” and 5,000-milerecommended intervals for “normal” driv-ing. Some early hybrids had 10,000-mile“normal” intervals. Today, most vehicles are

equipped with oil life monitors, with maxi-mum intervals of 10,000 miles/one year.

GENERAL MOTORS

Recommended drain intervals are largelyunchanged. Most vehicles are equippedwith oil life monitors, which are pro-maximum intervals ranging up to 12,000miles. Regardless of remaining oil life,GM recommends oil be changed at leastannually.

CHRYSLER

Six years ago, vehicles had 3,000-mile severe-service (Schedule B) and6,000-mile normal-service (ScheduleA) recommended drain intervals. Today,most vehicles are equipped with oil lifemonitors, with maximum intervals of8,000 miles/six months.

TOYOTA

Six years ago, vehicles had 5,000-milerecommended drain intervals. Today, mostvehicles have 10,000-mile/one-year rec-ommended intervals. The 4Runner modelwith the four-cylinder engine still carries a

5,000-mile drain recommendation.

HONDA

Six years ago, vehicles had 3,750-milesevere-service and 7,500-mile normal-service recommended drain intervals.Today, most vehicles are equipped withoil life monitors. Vehicles without oil lifemonitors have 5,000-mile severe-service

and 10,000-mile normal-service recom-mended intervals.

NISSAN/INFINITI

Recommended drain intervals arelargely unchanged. Schedule 1 calls for3,750-mile intervals for “typical” drivers,Schedule 2 calls for 7,500-mile intervalsfor steady-state highway driving and thePremium Maintenance schedule calls for3,750-mile intervals with additional ser-vice recommendations not included withthe other schedules. Most vehicles allowdrivers to adjust the reminder system.

ACURA

Six years ago, vehicles without oil lifemonitors had either 3,750-mile severe-service and 7,500-mile normal-servicerecommended drain intervals, or 5,000-mile severe-service and 10,000-milenormal-service recommended intervals.Today, vehicles without oil life monitorshave 5,000-mile severe-service and10,000-mile normal-service recommend-ed intervals.

Recommended drain intervals are largelyunchanged. Vehicles have 3,750-milesevere-service and 7,500-mile normal-service recommended intervals.

MAZDA

Vehicles have 5,000-mile/four-monthrecommended drain intervals for “spe-cial operating conditions” (Schedule 2)and 7,500-mile/six-month recommendedintervals for “typical/suburban driving”(Schedule 1).

SUBURU

Recommended drain intervals are largelyunchanged. An initial oil change is recom-mended at 3,000 miles/three months andsubsequent oil changes are recommend-ed at 7,500 miles/7.5 months.

SUZUKI

Recommended drain intervals are largelyunchanged. Vehicles have 7,500-milerecommended intervals.

MITSUBISHI

Recommended drain intervals arelargely unchanged. Non-turbochargedvehicles have 3,750-mile/three-monthsevere-service and 7,500-mile/six-monthnormal-service recommended intervals.Turbocharged vehicles have 3,000-mile/ three-month severe-service and 5,000--mended intervals.

KIA

Six years ago, vehicles had 3,000-mile severe-service and 7,500-mile normal-service recom-mended drain intervals. Today, most vehicleshave 3,750-mile severe-service and 7,500-milenormal-service recommended intervals. Somevehicles have 5,000-mile/four-month severe-

service and 6,500-mile/six-month normal-service recommended intervals.

The 49th running of the AMSOIL WorldChampionship Snowmobile Derby in EagleRiver, Wis. might go down as one of thegreatest races in the event’s storied history.Entering Sunday’s World Championship-ists were even-odds to win. Defendingchampion and Team AMSOIL driver P.J.career championship, Gary Moyle wantednumber three, Matt Schulz won two yearsago and the Wahl team featured Brandon

Johnson on the pole and Dustin Wahlwith an undefeated day of qualifying onSaturday. Despite these riders’ long list ofaccomplishments, it was a young gun whomade this year’s Derby one of the mostmemorable.

Nick Van Strydonk has been racing at theAMSOIL Derby Track for 17 of the 21 yearshe’s been alive. As a racer who grew up inthe shadows of the storied track in nearbyTomahawk, Wis., it has been his life-longSunday, Van Strydonk showed top speed

on his AMSOIL-backed Polaris.

Speed and stamina are the two biggestby far the longest race of the season forice oval teams. Van Strydonk had both onby grabbing a lead he was unwilling torelinquish, Van Strydonk didn’t allow theformer champion to walk away during thethe mandatory pit stop.

After the teams made their necessaryunderway, with Van Strydonk push-ing Schulz once again. With morelaps came more pressure, and VanStrydonk soon had Wanderscheidand Moyle nipping on his heels. Tworestart, Wanderscheid jumped intosecond and Van Strydonk droppedback as far as sixth. But 10 laps is an

eternity in ice oval racing. With fourlaps to go, at least six sleds racedwithin a fraction of a second, andVan Strydonk tucked low into theturns and pushed himself back intocontention. With Schulz still runningout front, the second through sixthpositions swapped spots on everylap, and with two to go, Van Strydonkmoved into second and proceededto aggressively pursue Schulz.

With a great race already nearcompletion, only one thing couldmake the race an all-time favorite:

Van Strydonk needed to catch and passSchulz on the last lap to win the Snow GoerCup. The 21-year-old seized the moment,a margin of 0.025 seconds.

“We’ve worked so hard for so long to win aWorld Championship,” said Van Strydonk.“To win it at the end, being up and down allrace, is just unbelievable.”

“It was a hard-fought battle for the leadfor most of the race,” said Wanderscheid.“We were close, but it wasn’t in the cards. IChampionship at next year’s 50th.”
