During Lieutenant Colonel Al Amatuzios 25 years as anaward-winning jet ghter pilot, he gained a solid apprecia-tion for the extraordinary lubricants that protected theengines of the jets he ew. He knew that only theselubricants, synthetic lubricants, could stand up to thedemanding operating conditions of jet engines and thesevere temperature extremes they encounter.

He knew also that the same outstanding performancebene ts synthetic lubricants provide for jet engineswould prove invaluable to car, truck and other internalcombustion engines.

Amatuzio began an intense period of research in 1963.He assembled the industrys most knowledgeablechemists, and by 1966 his newly formulated syntheticmotor oil was being sold commercially. Throughout the1960s Amatuzio continued his research and develo edcommercially available synthetic oils under a varietyof names. In 1972, AMSOIL became the rst syntheticmotor oil in the world to meet American Petroleumnstitute service requirements.

The introduction of AMSOIL synthetic motor oil in 1972set all-new standards for motor oil quality. AMSOILsynthetic motor oil outperformed conventional petroleummotor oils on all counts. It was clear from the start thatthis innovative product would play a major role in engineperformance and engine life.

In 1994 matuzio ai ne d he ltim e recognitionas the pioneer in the synthetic lubricant industry withhis induction into the Lubricants World Hall of Fame.

Today, virtually every other motor oil manufacturer hasrecognized the superiority of synthetic lubricants and hasfollowed the AMSOIL lead with introductions of syntheticmotor oils of their own. They spend millions of dollarsadvertising their new and revolutionary products. No one, however, can match AMSOIL experience andtechnological knowhow. And no one delivers productslike AMSOIL.

I had lunch the other day with an oldfriend of mine. He had been a radarobserver in my jet ghter unit and went

on to become a high school teacher, basketball coach and, ultimately, a highschool principal. Now retired for severalyears, he lives in Las Vegas and onlyoccasionally gets back to this area. Heis an extremely genuine man.

We spoke, of course, about the goodold days. He remembered with fond-ness the strictness with which I ran theunit and the dedication and camara-derie we all developed as a crew. Hementioned also that through the yearshe has heard only good things about

AMSOIL. Everyone he speaks to, itseems, has nothing but good things tosay about the company. My friend hasfollowed our growth from the start and,as my friend, feels a personal senseof pride that AMSOIL has grown to theextent we have grown. Needless to say,it was wonderful to see him again.

Obviously, my friend was right. Wehave grown. We survived the dif cultearly years and fought through somemajor battles. We forged the marketfor synthetic motor oil, despite the longodds we faced. The major oil compa-nies and vehicle manufacturers wantednothing to do with synthetic oil, and theywere slow to acknowledge that AMSOILhad developed a superior product. We fought through our court battleswith Pennzoil and Amway and neverlost sight of our goals. And we de-fended ourselves against the ridiculousfalsehoods that people spread aboutsynthetic oil.

The real secret to our success, however,is really no secret at all. It all comesdown to our unwavering persistence,

a strong belief in our products and the

commitment to develop high qualityproducts that people want to buy products that would effectively

penetrate markets. Our XL oil line is a perfect example. Those products were developed topenetrate the installer market. Peoplewere moving toward do-it-for-me oilchanges, and we had to gain a foothold. We also knew that the XL oils wouldappeal to many of those consumerswho were not yet ready to jump to our25,000-mile oils. The XL oils, we wereconvinced, would open new doors forour Dealers. We were right. With theirreduced drain interval recommendation

and lower upfront cost, the XL oils tookoff. Consumers were attracted to theAMSOIL brand, and they found value inthe 7,500-mile drains. Installers foundvalue, too, in the pro ts the XL oilsgenerated. The XL oils have nowbecome the oils of choice for manyDealers, Preferred Customers andinstallers. In fact, the XL line currentlyaccounts for 28 percent of our passen-ger car motor oil sales. Its no surprise. They are fantastic oils.

And now they are even better. We havebeefed up the additive package andgiven the oils more extended drainpunch. This falls in line with the ve-hicle manufacturers who are calling forlonger drains. Some Toyota models, forexample, call for 10,000-mile oil drainintervals, and Ford will equal that onsome 2011 models. General Motors,of course, has lengthened its oilchange recommendations with itsoil life monitoring systems. As you will also read in thisissue, the reformulated XLoils meet the new ILSACGF-5 and API SN servicerequirements. They

are better-performing oils with absolute-ly no increase in price. There is de nitevalue in that.

To be certain, we have madesubstantial inroads into the installermarket with our XL oils, but we still havework to do. Unfortunately, 90 percent ofinstallers remain stuck on the 3,000-mileoil change recommendation, andreports indicate that by the year 2018,80 percent of all drivers will be havingtheir oil changed by them. Too manyconsumers, I am afraid, will continueto follow their 3,000-mile oil changeadvice. We have a major hurdle yet tocross and a huge market to capture.

I was taught early in my engineeringcareer, In God we trust; all others, bringdata. I have to chuckle a little everytime I tell someone about my deep-seat-

ed belief that I will not accept any con-clusions on a technical subject withoutbeing fully backed up by unbiased data.

I think it might even get a little irritatinghearing me continually ask, Whereis your data? I know many AMSOILDealers and customers feel the sameway; they want the facts before accept-ing things as foregone conclusions.Dealers depend on solid technical datato provide customers the best possiblesolutions to technical problems. Theyknow that when you become a solidtechnical resource to customers, youincrease your value and credibility in thecustomers eyes. The monthly Tech Talkcolumn will provide solid technical factsfor people who really want to know.

This inaugural issue of AMSOIL Maga- zine features the introduction of there-formulated XL line of oils with boostedextended-drain capabilities. The rstquestion many people ask is, whatimparts XLs extended-drain abilities?

First, you need to understand whatprevents an oil from providing adequate

protection over an extended period oftime. Two common failure modes forpassenger car motor oils are oxidationand acid build-up. Oxidation causes oilviscosity increase, sludge, varnish andhard carbon deposits. These effects canrestrict oil ow and stick piston rings, leading up to catastrophic enginedamage.

Acid build-up in the oil sump occursfrom oxidation, combustion by-productsand other contaminants. Over time, an

oils ability to neutralize acids is reducedand, eventually, the detergent system isunable to combat deposits. Corrosivewear can occur in bearing materials

and other critical areas, and excessivedeposits can form. If an oil is to be usedfor extended drain intervals it must suc-cessfully address the issues of abnor-mal viscosity increase and excessiveacid build-up over the speci ed interval.

AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils aredesigned to overcome these commonoil failure modes. Highly saturatedsynthetic molecules have been provento do a superior job handling heat andresisting oxidation. Unlike conventionaloil molecules, pure, uniform syntheticmolecules are manufactured with morestable chemical groups that actuallyblock oxygen and other contaminantsfrom attaching to the base oil chain, resulting in more stable viscosity levelsfor longer periods of time.

Well-designed anti-oxidants enhance re-sistance to chemical attack and providean added layer of protection againstsludge development. Many of thesematerials work by proactively attachingto oxygen molecules and contaminantsand consuming them in an oxidationreaction. This effectively prevents theseviscosity-increasing materials fromattaching to the backbone of the baseoils. Basically, anti-oxidants slow downthe oxidation process by tying up free-radical materials.

Acid build-up and detergent levels aremeasured by two different variables:total base number (TBN) and total acidnumber (TAN). TBN is a measure of theremaining detergent or acid-neutralizingcapability of an engine oil. TAN is ameasure of acid build-up in the system.

As TBN levels are naturally depletedover time, TAN levels increase. With ex-tended drain interval oils, the detergentlevel is boosted to keep acids in checkover the extended period between oilchanges.

The XL series features a new extended-drain additive boost designed in part

to increase the oils starting TBN levelsand enhance TBN retention to safelyprovide excellent lubrication for up to10,000 miles and beyond. The XL line isalso designed with premium syntheticbase oils and an anti-oxidant systemthat safely resists chemical attack overthis period.

AMSOIL PRODUCTS PREPARE EQUIPMENTAMSOIL PRODUCTS PREPARE EQUIPMENTFOR TOUGH WINTER WEATHERFOR TOUGH WINTER WEATHER

AMSOIL products are formulated to provide maximumprotection for engines and fuel systems during storage, whileAMSOIL synthetic motor oils low pour points provide superiorcold-temperature protection and performance in two- andfour-stroke winter equipment.

Fall Storage ProtectionGasoline can break down in as little as 60 days, causingvarnish and gums that clog injectors, fuel lines and carburetors, leading to poor engine performance and starting problems. In many applications, draining the fuel system can be

impractical, and doing so can expose the system tocorrosion on the bare metal in the tank and fuelsystem and cause gasket and seal cracking.

AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer reduces the oxidationthat occurs when fuel is stored for extended peri-ods, improving performance, extending equipmentlife and decreasing maintenance expenses.

During storage, uctuations in ambient tempera-tures can form condensation within the engine thatcan cause surface corrosion on cylinder liners, piston rings, anti-friction bearings and steel/ironcontact surfaces on rotational seals. Long periodsof storage can also dry out cylinders, often result-ing in permanent damage when the equipment isdry-started in the spring.

AMSOIL Engine Fogging Oil offers superior lmretention, providing long-term protection againstcorrosion and dry starts, extending engine lifeand reducing operating expenses. Its aerosolspray formulation offers easy and clean appli-cation, while reaching more components andoffering complete distribution of the oil, somethingespecially bene cial in applications with horizon-tal cylinder orientation, such as outboard motors.

    Winter Four-Stroke Performance

Conventional oils thicken in the cold, whichcan result in inadequate lubrication to criticalengine parts at cold start-up, or even preventthe engine from starting.

AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke Power SportsSynthetic Motor Oil provides serious protec-tion and performance in four-stroke engines, including ATVs and snowmobiles. Its broad0W-40 viscosity rating effectively protects inboth hot and cold temperature extremes.

AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke Synthetic SmallEngine Oil provides exceptional protection inthe severe-service conditions common in bothgasoline- and diesel-fueled small engines, including welders, skidsteers, compressors, snowblowers and more. It remains uid at sub-zero temperatures for superior cold-weatherprotection.

Winter Two-Stroke PerformanceAMSOIL DOMINATOR and INTERCEPTOR

Synthetic 2-Cycle Oils provide exceptional performancein snowmobiles and other two-stroke equipment. AMSOILDOMINATOR is formulated with heavier base oils for on theedge operation, while also protecting pistons and bearingssubjected to the rigors of extreme riding.

AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR is engineered speci cally for power-sports applications and engines equipped with exhaust powervalves. It contains the nest synthetic base oils and additivesfor exceptional cleanliness, while controlling exhaust valvesticking and providing outstanding overall lubrication.

Gasoline AdditiveAMSOIL Quickshot SE is formulated to thoroughlyclean varnish, gums and insoluble debris in two- andfour-stroke gasoline-powered small engines andpowersports equipment fuel systems, restoringpeak performance. It effectively addresses perfor-mance issues related to ethanol, water and dirtypump gas, while stabilizing fuel between uses andduring short-term storage periods.

AMSOIL has reformulated its line ofExtended Life (XL) Synthetic MotorOils to provide up to 10,000-mile/six-month drain intervals, or longer whenrecommended in owners manuals orindicated by electronic oil life monitoringsystems. Pricing remains unchanged, providing customers with enhancedvalue.

Featuring extended-drain boost technol-ogy, the new formulations boast an extrameasure of select additives that neutral-ize contaminants longer. They continueto provide signi cant bene ts comparedto conventional oils, including superior

wear control, improved high- and low-temperature protection and increasedfuel economy, now throughout a longerdrain interval. Reformulated AMSOILXL Synthetic Motor Oils are API SNcerti ed and bear the API donut onthe label. They are also formulatedto meet or exceed the ILSAC GF-5performance requirements forgasoline engines that took effectOctober 1. Because GM only grantsdexos1 licenses to SAE 5W-30products, only AMSOIL XL 5W-30carries the dexos1 recommendation.

Increased Drain IntervalThe XL line was developed fordo-it-for-me (DIFM) customers. It over-came many of the obstacles Dealersfaced from installers who balked at25,000-mile drain intervals and non-API-certi ed oils, and provided DIFMcustomers with peace of mind beyond3,000 miles. At that time, some originalequipment manufacturers (OEMs) werebeginning to recommend drain intervalsbeyond the traditional 3,000 miles. Themore recent introduction of electronic

oil life monitoring systems extended oilchange intervals even further, althoughmost conventional motor oils stillcarry 3,000-mile/three-month maximumdrain intervals. Boasting a 7,500-mile/ six-month drain interval, AMSOIL XLSynthetic Motor Oils provided an extralevel of performance and protectionfor motorists extending drain intervalsbeyond 3,000 miles.

Today, OEMs are increasingly adoptingthe extended drain intervals AMSOILpioneered decades ago. Some Toyotamodels carry 10,000-mile drain recom-mendations, while Ford will begin calling

for 10,000-mile oil changes on certainmodel-year 2011 vehicles. Meanwhile, the new ILSAC GF-5 and API SN motoroil speci cations require oils demon-strate increased fuel economy, reducedemissions and increased robustness. With the industry evolving, and to stayahead of the curve, AMSOIL reformu-lated its XL Synthetic Motor Oils to meetor exceed current performance require-ments and continue providing motoristswith superior performance and addedpeace of mind.

Extended-Drain BoostTechnologyAMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils useextended-drain additive technologyto provide longer service life. Duringnormal engine operation, the combus-tion process creates acidic by-productsthat can lead to internal componentcorrosion and a reduction in the lifeexpectancy of both the engine oil andengine. The motor oils reserve alkalin-ity, expressed as its Total Base Number(TBN), aids in the control of acidic

by-products. The higher the motor oilsTBN, the more effective it is at reducingthe corrosive effects of acids over anextended period of time. AMSOIL XLSynthetic Motor Oils feature a uniqueadditive chemistry that effectively raisesTBN and allows the oils to neutralizemore acidic contaminants and providesuperior protection over a longer period.

Meets or Exceeds New MotorOil Speci cationsAMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils meetor exceed the ILSAC GF-5 and APISN service requirements for motor oilsused in gasoline-powered vehicles. APISN is the designation of the AmericanPetroleum Institute and shares a numberof criteria with ILSAC GF-5. The Inter-national Lubricant Standardization andApproval Committee (ILSAC) createdILSAC GF-5 primarily to address threeimportant areas within the automotiveindustry: fuel economy, emissionssystem life and oil robustness.

Improved Fuel EconomyTo achieve government-mandated fueleconomy standards, OEMs are examin-ing every engine component for poten-tial efciency gains, including motor oil.To meet the GF-5 speci cation, motoroils must demonstrate an improvementin fuel economy compared to a refer-ence oil and retain at least part of thatimprovement after 100 hours of testing.

AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils arefuel-efcient formulations that reducefriction-related energy loss and meet theGF-5 speci cation. They provide betterfuel economy compared to convention-al, non-fuel-ef cient motor oils.

Longer drain intervals, bolder packaging and compliance with newindustry performance requirements among new features

Emissions System ImprovementsPhosphorus is often used as an anti-wear agent in motor oils. Over time, however, it can volatize and enterafter-treatment devices such as catalyticconverters and oxygen sensors, short-ening their lifespan, increasing tailpipeemissions and causing increasedengine oil oxidation and thickening.

AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils haveexcellent phosphorus retention andhelp improve catalytic converterservice life for low exhaust emissions,in accordance with GF-5 requirements.

Engine Oil RobustnessFor GF-5, engine oil robustness isde ned as an oils performance in theareas of piston cleanliness, sludgeresistance and turbo protection. Oilsmeeting GF-5 must exhibit improve-ments in each area relative to theprevious GF-4 speci cation.

Fortied with extra detergent and dis-persant additives, AMSOIL XL SyntheticMotor Oils are engineered to resistsludge better than conventional oils, promoting clean operation for longer-lasting, better-running engines.

As temperatures inside the combus-tion chambers of modern enginescontinue rising, piston cleanliness andturbo protection become more impor-tant. Deposits on the piston crown cancause pre-ignition, reducing perfor-mance, while sticking rings can causeblow-by, reduced compression andpoor performance. Turbochargers canreach 100,000 rpm and temperatures of1,200 F, creating an environment that

can destroy lesser oils, leading tothermal coking and bearing failure.

AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils resistthe effects of thermal breakdown, including evaporation, viscosity loss anddeposit formation for increased pistoncleanliness and turbo protection.

ApplicationsAMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils areexcellent for use in all types of gasoline-fueled vehicles. They are recommendedfor all domestic and foreign vehiclesrequiring any of the listed performancespeci cations:

AMSOIL Dealer Ernie Berg of Nipawin,Saskatchewan, Canada recentlyinstalled an Injen/AMSOIL Power-FlowGasoline Intake System in his 2005Dodge Quad Cab 4x4 with a 5.7LHemi gasoline engine.

Wow, what a difference the systemmakes, Berg said. When you kick itdown at 30 mph or 65 mph, it roars tolife. It was an easy install of about 45minutes. I only had to modify the sup-

plied mounting bracket a little to makeit t. It wouldnt line up with the fendervibra-mount quite right. What a sound. Its just like being a teenager again.

Berg installed an AMSOILDual Remote Oil By-PassUnit (BMK-23) on the truckabout a year ago.

    He also installed a Flow-master Cat-Back exhaust

system. It is one mean sounding ma-chine, Berg said. With the Injen/AM-SOIL intake system working in tandemwith the exhaust system, my truck takesoff like a scared rabbit.

A drive to Prince Albert about an hourand a half from home brought a signi -cant increase in gas mileage.

I managed about 24 mpg American,Berg said. I was amazed becauseof the wind coming out of the north atabout 25 mph, he said. I am very im-pressed with my truck. On the way there,I was driving into a very strong wind.

Combine the exhaust and intake withthe great AMSOIL oils and uids andit just goes to show how the qualityof the products can and do make adifference.

Berg is a dedicated user of AMSOILproducts.

We got a 2006 Dodge GrandCaravan SE last month. It only has80,000 kilometers (50,000 miles) onit, so its just broke in, he said. I willbe changing the engine oil and lter, air lter and transmission uid andpower steering uid over to AMSOIL

NEW POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGIESNEW POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGIESDEMAND PREMIUM LUBRICANTSDEMAND PREMIUM LUBRICANTS

Fuel ef ciency has become an increas-ingly important priority for motoristsover the past several years, increasingdemand for vehicles able to squeezemaximum mileage from a tank offuel. Automobile manufacturers haveresponded by introducing a growingnumber of fuel ef cient vehicles, includ-ing hybrids, diesels and alternative fuelvehicles.

New Fuel Ef cient PowertrainTechnologiesNew powertrain technologies are ex-

pected to continue the trend toward fuelefcient vehicle designs. For example, turbocharged direct injection technol-ogy is used in the Ford EcoBoost enginefor more precise fuel control, deliver-ing a ne mist of fuel directly into eachcylinder. Dual turbochargers allowfaster throttle response and increasedpower, while providing the fuel ef ciencyexpected from a smaller engine. Infact, twin-turbocharged direct injectionEcoBoost engines boast the power of aV8 and the fuel ef ciency of a V6.

Increased Importance ofQuality LubricationAccording to Daniel Kapp, Ford directorof powertrain research and advancedengineering, fuel ef cient powertraintechnologies such as direct injection will

require improved powertrain lubricants, revealing that high quality lubricants caneffectively address higher temperaturesand loads, friction losses and increaseduse of ethanol fuels.

Lubricants can continue to play a veryintegral role, but maybe some of thechallenges are a little bit different, saidKapp. If we just look at EcoBoosting, were certainly seeing higher operatingtemperatures and much higher speci cloads. So imagine now very small en-gines operating at very high combustiontemperatures.

Higher engine operating temperaturesand loads will increase the importanceof viscosity retention. Because of thehigher speci c loads, and all the strainon the oil system if you will, we may belooking forward to a 0W-30 as moreeffective than a 5W-20, said Kapp. Those are some of the things wereworking through.

Lubricants will also play a role in improv-ing vehicle ef ciency through frictionreduction, while the extended drainintervals pioneered by AMSOIL willcontinue toward mainstream accep-tance. Most major automobile manufac-turers have been moving away from thetraditional 3,000-mile oil change. Fordcurrently recommends drain intervalsof up to 7,500 miles, and, according to

Kapp, the company will begin recom-mending 10,000-mile intervals with the2011 model year.

Automotive FutureAlthough automotive technology hasprogressed rapidly in recent years, itis not entirely clear where the industrywill ultimately end up. In that contestyoure seeing different energy-basedsolutions, said Kapp. Its obviouslynot as clear there, but the percentageof internal combustion engines will bedependent on contributions from the

fuel side. Well continue to see obviouslymuch more volume and expansion ofhybrid technology. The technology pathwere on for conventional engines is alsovery compatible over the long term withrenewable fuels and with hybridization.

AMSOIL Synthetic Motor OilsAMSOIL synthetic motor oils are aheadof the curve, providing superior protec-tion and performance for both older andnewer engine technologies. Their pre-mium synthetic formulations effectivelyaddress increased temperatures and

loads by maintaining protective viscos-ity and reducing friction, heat and wear, keeping vehicles running in top condi-tion for longer periods of time.

Ford is expected to recommend10,000-mile oil drain intervals

    with the 2011 model year.

Did you know Scott Douglas truckcaught on re during Saturdays pointsrace in Crandon? Yep, up in ames. That took him out of the championship, and into his back-up truck for the rest ofthe weekend.

Fellow AMSOIL driver Mike Obergbroke an axle in Crandon. Mike couldhave called it quits after a long season.Instead, he pulled into the pits, tied itup with a ratchet strap and nishedthe race.

Chad Hord had to x a at mid-race.He then went out and laid down thefastest time of the day.

Sometimes the press release doesnttell the whole story, and knowing thatAMSOIL has put together a team ofdrivers who can overcome such adver-sity and still want to compete makesScotts win in the inaugural AMSOILCup that much more rewarding.

For the past 25 years, Labor Day Week-end at Crandon International Racewayin Crandon, Wis. has meant Cup racing. The top professional drivers in both thePro 4x4 and Pro 2wd classes tradition-ally battle it out together (with the Pro2wd trucks afforded a 12-second headstart) for the largest purse of the yearand, more importantly, off-season brag-ging rights.

However, the Cup racing tradition atCrandon was in jeopardy this spring.Long-time sponsor BorgWarner decidedto step away after 17 years, and a newsponsor was sorely needed to keep thetradition alive. AMSOIL stepped in, andthe company couldnt have written a

better script for the inaugural AMSOILCup race, the nal event of the 2010TORC Series season.

Winning Cup races hooked us to off-road racing, said AMSOIL RaceProgram Manager Jeremy Meyer.Scott Douglas won his second in2006, and Mike Oberg took homethe Baldwin Memorial Cup later thatyear. Big races like the AMSOIL Cupbring out the sports best, and thiswas a great opportunity to step up andshow our support to off-road racing atits highest level of competition.

The companys commitment to thesport and its Cup sponsorship wererewarded in the inaugural race whenAMSOIL Pro 4x4 driver Scott Doug-las won the AMSOIL Cup, beating ahuge eld that included the best tal-ent in the sport, including NASCARsRobby Gordon, three-time BorgWar-ner Cup winner Rob MacCachren

and 2010 TORC Pro 4x4 championJohnny Greaves.

In front of a record crowd of well over

50,000 fans, Douglas pushed throughturn one with the lead over the rest ofthe Pro 4x4 crowd. Within just a fewlaps, Douglas caught the back of thePro 2wd class trucks and closed in onrace leader Jeff Kincaid. (It was Kincaidwho beat Douglas by a mere .259 sec-onds for the Crandon Cup in June.)

By lap six, both Douglas and fellowPro 4x4 driver Rick Husemanpassed Kincaid, but Husemanstruck quickly broke down, givingDouglas sole possession of thelead with ve laps remaining. Thebattle with Huseman and Kincaidgave precious seconds back to theeld as both Greaves and SteveBarlow quickly found themselves be-

hind Douglas. For the nextve laps, Douglas keptboth trucks behind himand took the historic win.

Its always great to end theseason with a win, and they

dont come any bigger or bet-ter than this, said Douglas. Im

proud that we could kick-offthe AMSOIL Cup tradition witha victory for the AMSOIL familyof employees and Dealers this one is for them.
