IntroductionThis Insights Discovery profile is based on Amy Bloemendaal’s responses to the InsightsPreference Evaluator which was completed on 07 November 2014.

The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocratesidentified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built aroundthe model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This modelwas published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings.Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work inunderstanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to thepresent day.

Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understandingand development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths andweaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help themto better respond to the demands of their environment.

Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. Itreports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or deleteany statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends to identifywhether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you.

Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and takeaction. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them onareas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth personallyand interpersonally.

OverviewThese statements provide a broad understanding of Amy’s work style. Use this section to gain abetter understanding of her approaches to her activities, relationships and decisions.

Personal Style

Amy radiates goodwill and enthusiasm. She is optimistic about life in general and humanpotential in particular. She finds it frustrating to do a lot of detail work or attend to practicalmatters for long periods. Dealing with red tape can be especially difficult. Details and the deeperinterpersonal skills are not her strong points as she is mainly interested in seeing the possibilitiesbeyond the present. Since she is more excited about using her imagination and creatingsomething original, she may not take the time to collect all the information prior to beginning theproject or process. She feels that work should be enjoyable, or it is probably not worth doing.

She is prepared to attempt almost anything, but her work needs to be active rather thantheoretical. She prefers to be seen as rather sociable and may relish the occasional spotlight. She can find it hard to concentrate on the small details and she may get bored with projectsquickly. She will lose interest quickly and lack the self-discipline necessary to complete what shehas started unless the project can continue to excite her vision. Tasks that involve practicalday-to-day maintenance tend to frustrate her.

Lively and entertaining, and with infectious energy, she needs change and variety in order to beat her best. She dislikes routine and can find it hard to apply herself consistently. At work sheoften makes significantly more starts than finishes and she may need someone else to followthrough with the details. Her life will tend to be a series of initiated, but unfinished projects. Heraim is to fit all the pieces of the jigsaw together into a complete picture, but for Amy the jigsawkeeps expanding with the discovery of every new piece.

Amy is interested both in possibilities beyond what is already obvious and in the ways that thesepossibilities might affect others. She is accomplished at working with individuals and groups andcan quickly find herself pushed into a leadership role. She has a strong ego and achievingsignificance in life is important to her. She should take care to include the practical details in herprojects and continually try to look at situations from an objective viewpoint rather than just herown perception. Her interest lies in seeing possibilities beyond what is already present andknown, by using her insight, ingenuity and intellect.

Her focus is on the immediate, resulting in a rather low tolerance for detailed procedures androutines. Amy is adaptable, easy-going, warm, friendly and generous. As she is always drawn tothe excitement of new challenges and possibilities, it is important that she develops a morecritical judgement, otherwise she may waste time and energy in spreading herself too thinly. Amylearns by challenging convention and is capable of arguing both sides of a subject for thestimulation it gives her. Amy enthusiastically and co-operatively joins in activities and can juggleseveral activities at once.

Interacting with Others

Outgoing, friendly, challenging and sympathetic, Amy radiates warmth and fellowship. Sheencourages freedom and independence and is good at getting things done through other people

when she slows down and takes the time to delegate. She constantly seeks opportunities to talkthings through with others. She normally reads people well, continually looking for the good inboth the situation and in others. Amy has a remarkable ability to get people to follow her lead.

The easy-going nature and good humour that Amy displays makes her an attractive companion.Consequently she is known by a large number of people and enjoys a wide circle ofacquaintances. Amy's feelings play a prominent role in her life and she manages to inject afriendly element into any work she is assigned to or involved in. She may harbour a belief that noone really understands her or cares about her. She may become emotional and rather vulnerablein this state. Bringing enthusiasm and energy to most activities, she can turn a dull managerialtask into a game by using her persuasiveness and creativity to maintain the interest andcommitment of others. Amy's preferred focus is on the positive, harmonious and uplifting aspectsof people and human relations.

Some events for her quickly turn into special occasions for everyone. Amy is outgoing andmakes things more fun for others by her pure and unreserved enjoyment of the moment. Shedirects her attention outwards and is skilled in understanding the needs and motivations ofothers. She prefers creating a busy and exciting world around her. She may frequently rebelagainst the rules and in so doing will strongly resist attempts by others to regulate her behaviour.

Decision Making

Amy is inquisitive, versatile, adaptable and resourceful in solving challenging, theoreticalproblems. A born entrepreneur, she is alert to all the possibilities and is fascinated by new ideas. She shows strong initiative and operates through creative impulses. The best part of a project forher is the initial problem solving element and the creation of something new. Thereafter theinterest in completion begins to wane. Sometimes she makes poor choices by getting involvedwith too many things at once. She prefers to make decisions based on “gut feel” rather than onexhaustive and repetitive analysis.

She is stimulated by difficulties and is most ingenious in solving them. She may have so manyideas on the go that she has difficulty in making up her mind on the best course of action. Sheenjoys the executive role and usually rises to challenges although she needs someone aroundwith enough common sense to bring up overlooked facts and take care of important details.Trying to focus more on the facts, not just on the people, can be helpful in her decision making.Amy's tendency to think “out loud” enables others to follow her line of thinking.

She prefers tasks or projects which allow flexibility of scheduling. Work that uses her ideas toimprove or start a project suits her, but once these ideas get off the ground she prefers someoneelse to carry on with the details. She is prepared to make decisions through group consensus. She has a tendency towards making higher risk decisions. Through her intuitive feelingpersonality, she may have difficulty in limiting herself to a single project and usually prefers tokeep many balls in the air.

Possible Blind SpotsOur perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who weare onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our lessconscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “BlindSpots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test themfor validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues.

Amy’s possible Blind Spots:

Amy's biggest drawbacks are sometimes perceived by others as arrogance, impatience andinsensitivity to others' feelings. To avoid making mistakes, she should digest all the informationbefore acting. Her natural quickness and pressure to anticipate what is coming means sheoccasionally assumes wrongly that she knows what a person is going to say, and is tempted tojump in to finish their sentences.

She may not wish to hear the objections of others because, to her, her own position usuallyseems unquestionable. When a project goes wrong, she will not readily take the blame. Fast, energetic, dynamic and creative, her motto could be “If at first you don't succeed, drop it and trysomething else!”, which can lead to unfinished tasks. She expects to win and is very assertive inattaining outcomes despite how narrow her view may sometimes appear. She values fast actionand doing many things at once. When under pressure she may get the job done by cuttingcorners or neglecting quality.

She may neglect essential preparation as she moves quickly in her zeal to take on somethingnew. She may be seen by others as shallow or superficial due in part to her glib way with wordsand her orientation with the future. She could learn to protect herself against closed-mindednessby waiting a few seconds more before speaking, giving others the chance to offer input. Amymay not always appreciate or solicit the views of others and might, as a result, miss a moresuitable solution. Interested in solving problems quickly and as effortlessly as is practical, shetends to jump directly into the next situation and not follow through on the less exciting aspects ofcurrent projects.

Opposite TypeThe description in this section is based on Amy's opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Often, wehave most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are different toour own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for personal growthand enhanced interpersonal effectiveness.

Recognising your Opposite Type:

Amy’s opposite Insights type is the Coordinator, Jung’s “Introverted Sensing” type.

The Coordinator is a careful, cautious, conventional person who is diplomatic and sincere.Coordinators tend to be very loyal, precise and disciplined with high standards and expectationsof self. Coordinators may appear to lack self-confidence and prefer to operate in a structured andordered manner, focusing on established guidelines rather than future possibilities.

Amy will often observe the Coordinator procrastinating on a decision until all of the facts anddetails are available. Amy may also see the Coordinator as a critical and ideological thinker whowill be quiet and reserved around strangers. Coordinators do not like stress or chaos and tend tobe rather private, requiring support and reassurance. They prefer to build close relationships withsmall groups of people and like to retain the familiar and predictable. The Coordinator becomesstubborn if pressured, particularly by Amy!

Coordinators are concerned with what is “right” and, to Amy, appear slow in decision making. They prefer a steady-paced environment with little interpersonal aggression and they tend todistrust outgoing people. They are motivated by schedule and order and are among the mostprivate of the Insights types. Amy sees the Coordinator as ever concerned with efficiency, becoming stressed when others do not stick to tightly laid down schedules and plans.
