SARC minutes from 12 November 2018SARC Board minutes
The board discussed the need for a second VP nominee. The next VE session is 8 December but need sign ups by 3 December to Mike WA6ARA. We decided that any radio prize for the installation dinner should be a legal type OKed by the FCC. We noted that the SARC Facebook page should be up dated.
SARC General meeting minutesPresident Steve open the meeting at 7:03 pm and welcomed new or visitors- Jeff KM6LAB, Greg WA7IRW down from Reno, and Sam KG6EMT. Snacks were brought by Tom N6NPG thanks. Treasurer Keith N6WZZ reported changes to the bank account since the Airwaves was published. Bob K6ECM reported on the repeater changes since last meeting. The donation of the new repeater by Ed WI6RE and the installation by Bob K6ECM and Mike WA6ARA. Thanks to all. Jeff N6LIP reported that the Bill Thornburg horse ride went fine. Upcoming events were the Ridgecrest Desert Classic bike ride November 17; The Desert Ultra Marathon December 2; The Fire Mountain horse ride January 12/13; and the 20 Mule Team horse ride February 23/24. Upcoming VE session December 8 in the old Fire House with reservations needed by December 3 to Mike WA6ARA. Reminders that the 10-meter rag chew is Monday nights following the net on 28.400 MHz, and the 2-meter rag chew is on the 147.000 repeater at 2000 hours. It was noted that Pacificon was smaller than previous years. Show and Tell had an NCX 2.5w single band transceiver for $49 brought in by Greg WA7IRW. Steve KK6JTB talked about the elections coming up next month and the need to a second VP. The other nominees were President Steve KK6JTB, 1st VP Mike WA6ARA, Secretary Bill WA6QYER, and Treasurer Mark W6BST. Our proposed speaker was a CHP Officer who was to talk on ham radio used in a car, but he canceled out.
Our speaker was Roy N6JR who is a broadcast chief engineer of 3 stations in the Los Angeles area. He talked about the local IWV TV and FM broadcast booster. It started in 1950 after some experimental TV stations by hams started up in the LA area. Don Lee started a 2KHz 500w station that was an 80-line scan type under the call sign W6SX in 1933. Next was W6XYZ on Mount Wilson in 1942, an electronic scan type. In 1952 KNXT moved to Mount Wilson. In 1954 NOTS volunteers started an effort to build a booster (translator) on Laurel mountain to bring the signal into the IWV. It was an VHF to UHF translation and had problems with isolation of input to output. The Bishop area also had a translator for their area in the 1960’s. In 2012 the government has a Middle-Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act which sold off channels 37 and up to commercial interests. The current booster will have $130,000 changes to give us 67 channels with a new scan mode. The IWV Boosteroperation is all volunteer and survives on donations. Thanks to Roy for his informative talk and historical pictures of the IWV Booster system.
The door prize went to Malin AC7MC (a $25 gift card to the Tractor supply store). The 50/50 drawingwent to Dave KC6UUR, $11. Mike WA6ARA returned from the Desert Classic Bike ride meeting and indicated that they had donated $200 to SARC for the support of the ride on Saturday.Submitted by Bill WA6QYR, secretary.
December ProgramThe program for December will be a bit different from the regular fair. SARC recently participated in the OTHTC Ultra Marathon. During that event we had an “incident”. While all came out in the end well, cold have been bad. One of the participants, Tim, NH2BV, recommended we conduct a forensic analysis of how the event was executed, SARC participation and of the “incident”. After thinking about it, I believe he is right and now, while every thing is still fresh, is the time to do it. So, with discussion with the program chair Jeff, N6LIP, we decided to go ahead and conduct it as part of the December meeting. This should be interesting and we are looking for good input on possible solutions.
Up Coming Public Service EventsFire Mountain (Horse endurance ride) 12 – 13 Jan 201920 Mule Team Ride (Horse endurance ride) 23 – 24 Feb 2019
Ridgecrest Desert Classic
The Ridgecrest Desert Classic started out on November 17. This was the same format as in previousyears and the RDC Team from High Sierra Cyclists really has it working like a well oiled machine. SARC supplied the communications for the event. The new 147 repeater had excellent coverage at all locations, with and held radios. We did deploy the portable repeater as a backup but did not use it. Those form SARC who helped were Paula N6VGW, Dave W6TLA, Sandy KJ6VRW, Keith N6WZZ, Tim NH2BV, Bill WA6QYR, Bob KC6YYT and Mike WA6ARA.
OTHTC Ultra MarathonSARC participated in the Over The Hill Track Club Ultra Marathon onDecember 2nd. There were 245 runners, plus or minus, It was an“interesting” event, one that we will be talking about at the DecemberSARC meeting. Once again, the new 147 repeater worked excellent.SARC communicators helping included Paula N6VGW, Dave W6TLA,Cap WX1WIZ, Keith N6WZZ, Keith W6KRF, Tim NH2BV, RussKG7SOH, Tom W1ERG, Philip KG6JEL and Mike WA6ARA.
