Letter From Kyle Trebotich, Director of Greenheart Travel

Travel for a Change

A well-founded education comes at the confluence of traditional instruction and real-world experience, and most educators agree that concepts learned in the classroom are best reinforced through application and practice. This is particularly true in today’s interconnected world. Students will not only build their future careers from a foundation of academic work, but also from their ability to work with their colleagues across cultures, time zones, and language barriers.

I’ve been fortunate to have spent 10 years of my academic career abroad. I have moved a total of 12 times in my life, went to grade school in Hong Kong, earned my entire undergraduate degree in London, sailed through the Panama Canal on a container ship, cycled through Morocco, and earned my MBA in Mexico. This international exposure has taught me much about people, culture, and history. Most importantly, however, these cross-cultural experiences have taught me about myself. Each time I overcame language barriers, dealt with ambiguity and worked with multicultural teams, I gained more confidence in who I was and a greater clarity in what I wanted to pursue in the world.

Our role as educators is to provide students the tools and experiences that set them up for a lifetime of success. Whether the subject is mathematics or foreign language, we push our students to learn by introducing new concepts bit by bit outside of their comfort zone. As these skills are developed, so is the student’s confidence; learning then becomes an insatiable pursuit.

Research has found that students who have traveled are more involved in their classes and excited about their academic future than those who have not. Our job as educators is not only to encourage students to learn more, it is to encourage students to do more. We want them to be inspired, to change their lives, and lead others to do the same. This is our opportunity to support students in their pursuit for personal change through experiential learning abroad. Please join us at Greenheart Travel in our mission to change lives and foster the development of the future leaders of the world. Through travel and cultural exchange, we look forward to building a better classroom and future together.

About Greenheart Travel

Mission

We are personally invested in providing cultural immersion programs that change lives, advance careers and create leaders. We achieve this by partnering with organizations and governments overseas that empower their local communities through experiential learning and practical development. Greenheart Travel provides others with the same positive travel experiences in which we ourselves engage. Through travel and cultural exchange, we help individuals reach their full potential, leading to a more tolerant, peaceful and environmentally sustainable world.

Travel for a Change

Greenheart Travel is the only cultural exchange organization that incorporates environmental and social responsibility in our mission statement and every program we offer. The integrity of our programs is reflected by the effort we put into building relationships with projects, partners and participants that create active global citizens.

Greenheart Travel is a division of Greenheart International, a global nonprofit committed to connecting people and planet to create a more peaceful and sustainable global community. Learn more at greenheart.info.

Our Values

A commitment to the environment matches our enthusiasm for international travel. As the leading eco-friendly exchange organization, our concern for the welfare of the planet drives our passion for helping responsible travelers satisfy their thirst for adventure while respecting the environment and unique cultural heritage of the destinations they explore.

Our carbon offset program is another way to alleviate the environmental impact of travel. For every student who participates on a Greenheart Travel program, a portion of their program fee is donated to a carbon offset initiative.

Our Greenheart Club allows participants to pursue a deeper level of immersion through volunteerism, connecting participants to a global volunteer community that rewards their efforts.

Creating sustainability within our international communities is an important Greenheart Travel initiative. We believe in creating opportunities for people on the local and international level that allow them to take action in bettering their lives, their neighborhoods, and understanding through cultural and environmental awareness.

Why Greenheart Travel?Greenheart Travel’s study abroad, summer language camps and volunteer programs focus on full cultural immersion that fosters leadership skills and cultural competency. From living with local families to attending classes in their host country’s native language, these experiences give students global awareness. We are dedicated to not only preparing a student for this life-changing program abroad, but helping them during and after they return home to translate that experience to academic and career success.

“Moving to college was hardly an adjustment after moving to Vienna…partly because my experiences abroad have helped me to adapt to any situation. In Austria, I delved deep into another language and culture. In a way, studying abroad felt more like

“real life” learning.“ —- Sarah Gourevitch, Greenheart Travel high school in Austria alumna

Questions to ConsiderWe understand that as an educator, you have certain questions and concerns regarding how studying or traveling abroad will affect your students’ academic standing, and we hope to put your mind at ease with the following answers:

Can students receive academic credit for studying abroad?

Translating the cultural immersion experience to your students’ high school transcripts is an important concern. While Greenheart Travel can’t guarantee specific classes abroad, we can provide host country general curriculum guidelines, or language course and volunteer project itineraries to help find the best fit for your students’ academic goals. This will also help you and your student determine whether the best time to travel abroad is during a specific academic period or during a summer or winter break.

What if my student needs to fulfill service learning requirements?

The Greenheart Club encourages students to experience a deeper level of immersion through volunteerism. This is a unique opportunity for your student to meet their service learning hours, make a positive impact abroad and develop leadership skills while learning about the new community in which they are living. Learn more about getting involved at greenheartclub.org.

“I feel like studying abroad has prepared me more for college than any college prep class in high school could have. Learning and going to college is not just about getting it done faster and more efficiently, but actually understanding the world and having quality knowledge. There is no better way to do this than to study abroad. Not to mention… how much colleges like students that have studied abroad since it is generally uncommon.” —Rachel Kinder, Greenheart Travel high school in France alumna

“While in Spain, I experienced many amazing things and I got the chance to volunteer through awesome organizations and that actually inspired me to major in international relations.” —Eleanor Brow, Greenheart Travel high school in Spain alumna

>> Read more about Eleanor and other students’ service learning experiences on Greenheart Travel’s blog! greenhearttravel.org/blogs/global-greenheart-initiative/greenheart-clubgrant

Creating Global Leaders Currently, less than 1% of American high school students study abroad. A cultural exchange experience will not only help your student stand out on college applications, it is becoming an important stepping stone for a student’s success as our world continues to become more globally connected.

What kinds of support and safety precautions are offered to my students?

A student’s experience abroad begins from the moment they begin inquiring about the program. Each year Greenheart Travel demonstrates our support and safety standards to our participants through the following:

• Commitment to the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET)• Thorough vetting and screening process of each host family • Support for the educational value of international programs through guided, facilitated exchange activities

Before and during a program start date, your students will receive full support from a personal program manager in a number of ways:

• Pre-departure orientations via Skype for both parents and students• Regular check-ins throughout their program (with parents and students)• Access to an active social media community to speak with fellow travelers and alumni

Once a student’s program ends, Greenheart Travel continues supporting them in their transition back to their home country by:

• Checking in with the student when they have returned to get their feedback and counsel them through reverse culture shock

• Writing any letters of recommendation needed for college applications• Offering resources to help students highlight their cultural experience on college applications and offering

opportunities for leadership development in their community• Welcoming them into an active and inspiring alumni community of young global leaders

Can students travel in a group?

Greenheart Travel offers group travel opportunities for both teens and educators in select countries and programs. Ask us about how your students can volunteer at projects in destinations like Costa Rica or how your school can participate in a school to school exchange. Email [email protected] for more information.

The Volunteer ProjectLocated in the middle of the rainforest in San Carlos province of Costa Rica, this eco-reserve is a nature and animal-lover’s paradise. Unlike other rescue centers, this reserve is focused on rehabilitating animals and releasing the back into the wild.

Why the Project Needs Volunteers:The rescue center has grown tremendously in recent years, and more and more animals get dropped off at the center every day for rehabilitation. Without the help of volunteers, there would not be enough hands to feed the animals, build and clean the cages, maintain the beauty of the center or connect with the local community through outreach.

“Even though my son stayed a short time last summer, he had a wonderful experience and the family he stayed with were very friendly and treated him really well.
