What was the Little Ice Age?

A period of cooling that occurred after the medieval warm period, lasting 500 years

Caused global temperature to drop four degrees cooler

Scientist suggest the causes of the Little Ice Age to be : orbital cycles, decreased solar activity, increased volcanic activity, altered ocean current flows, and inherent variability of global climate

Threatened human survival

When did the Little Ice Age occur?

Started around the 13th century when a pack of ice began advancing southwards in the North Alantic

Ranged from the 13th century till the 19th century

What effects did the Little Ice Age have on history?

Glaciers were believed to be possessed by the devil so priest were summoned to ask for God’ help

In 1607 – 1814 frost fairs were celebrated in England due to the rivers being frozen solid

Crops began to fail and the bubonic plague as well as famine took the lives of millions

The harsh weather was blamed on neighbors accused of being witches , and were burned at the stake
