Be part of our story

W e started the journey towhere we are today in 2006.We were established because

of the response to a severe lack of regis-tered nurses in the region and in Slove-nia. The Faculty of Health Care Jesenice(FHCJ) was founded by the JeseniceMunicipality in order to offer a firstcycle professional higher educationstudy program Nursing (Diploma/3yrs).At the same time, health care institu-tions in the region expressed a willing-ness to become clinical bases for stu dentsand cooperate with the faculty. In September 2006, the College becameaccredited with the Council for HigherEducation of the Republic of Sloveniaand obtained concession for full-timestudies in December of the same year. A year later, with the enrollment of 70full-time and 60 part-time students, the College began implementing thefirst cycle professional higher educationstudy program Nursing Diploma/3yrs).At the time, this was the first accred-ited study program for Nursing inSlovenia to be in accordance with theEuropean Directive and the BolognaDeclaration. The second cycle studyprogram Nursing (Master’s Degree/2 yrs) was first offered in the year2009/2010, in year 2015/2016 was forthe first time offered second cycle study

program Health promotion. The secondcycle (Master’s Degree/2 yrs) study program Health Care Management is in the process of development, as wellas two second level upgrade study pro-grams – Psychiatric nursing and Infec-tions connected to health. Followingthe successful accreditation and the enrolment of the first class of studentsin the academic year 2007/2008, FHCJkept developing and improving in dif-ferent areas. FHCJ is practicing scien-tific, research and educational activitiesin the field of Health (ISCED, 72) andother related fields, primary scientificdiscipline is Nursing. Faculty is besidesnursing developing also health promo-tion, management and quality andsafety in health care. At the same time, these are fields where new study pro-grams are developing.

WHERE IS THIS PLACEWHERE OUR JOURNEY

HAS STARTED?

Slovenia Faculty of Health Care Jesenice is located in the north-west part ofSlovenia, a small but charming Central European country. Stretchingfrom the eastern Alps to the northernpart of the Adriatic Sea, Slovenia borders Austria to the north, Italy tothe southwest, Hungary to the north-east and Croatia to the south, coveringan area of 20,273 square kilometres andhaving just over 2 million inhabitants. The official languge spoken in Slove-nia is Slovene, but many people speakEnglish and other foreign languagesfluently. The capital city is Ljubljana, famous for its modern feel and itsquaint old part of the town. The symbol of Ljubljana is a dragon. You can find (green) dragons sitted onthe so-called Dragon Bridge, keepingan eye on the Ljubljanica River flow-ing underneath. In the past, the terri-tory of what is now Slovenia formedpart of the Roman Empire and laterthe Habsburg Monarchy. A look at

Jesenice The town Jesenice where Faculty of Health Care lies in the UpperCarniola region, in the Upper SavaValley. It is surrounded by the Kara-vanke mountain range to the northand by mount Me`akla to the south.Across the Karavanke lies the Austri -an town of Villach (Slovene: Beljak). The town name Jesenice is derivedfrom the ash tree (Slovene: jêsen) whichonce grew in abundance in the area.

The history of Jesenice is tightly knitwith that of its ironworks and metal-lurgical industries, which have, untilrecently, been the driving force of thetown's development in virtually allareas. Just 5 km north of Jesenice, onthe top of the hill named Planina podGolico, is a site to which many flockin the spring to see countless wild daf-fodils covering the hill, especially inMay when the flowers are blooming. That is why Jesenice is sometimescalled a town of “iron and daffodils”.

The official languge spoken in Slovenia isSlovene, but many people speak Englishand other foreign languages fluently.

"Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world.

Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before. Let your soul take you

where you long to be... Close your eyes let your spirit start to soar, and you'll live as you've never lived before."

”»The fact that the Faculty of Health Care Jesenice is located at the foot of hightowering Alps, in a remote part of Slovenia about an hour's drive from the capital city (but still conveniently located near other big cities across the bor-der), becomes unimportant against everything else the FHCJ has to offer. Assoon as you step through the door, you find yourself surrounded by energetic, kind people who are there to teach you everything they know about nursing. I have never regretted stepping through that door, and like studying at FHCJ very much.«

In the second and third year, you willbecome acquainted with specific areasof nursing and process work in healthcare. The knowledge and skills acqui -red during this time include healthcare system management and aware-ness of the role of nursing in the sys-tem, teamwork, leadership, changeimplementation and quality in medi-cine and nursing. This knowledge willhelp you understand the processes inwhich health care system works. Theprogram provides the minimum re-quired elective rate for the electivesubjects' module where students selectthree subjects (9 ECTS). In adittion,

the foreign language (3 ECTS) in thefirst year is elective, as is the diplomathesis in the third year (10 ECTS).

With elective subjects, students getthe chance to enhance their existentknowledge from obligatory classes, and by doing so keep in touch withthe much-needed development ofnursing in Slovenia and the EU. Partof elective contents will consist ofyour diploma thesis, the result of 40 hours of seminar work, 170 hoursof individual work, and 50 hours ofclinical practice conducted in the sameway as all other clinical practices, but

focusing on the topic of the diplomathesis. The clinical practice from thefield of your diploma thesis willbroaden your theoretical knowledgeand help you set the guidelines for theempirical part of your thesis. Clinicalpractice will be conducted in clinicalbases under the supervision of a uni-versity lecturer - your diploma thesismentor. The goal is to promote clini-cal research in theses for the selectedarea of nursing. This approach enablesadditional electiveness, which meansthat the total number of electiveECTS credits for the study program is 22 ECTS.

CLINICAL EXERCISES

Clinical exercises will prepare you forclinical practice. They are conductedunder simulated conditions in mod-ernly equipped rooms for practicaltraining in nursing. In the first year, clinical exercises are conducted underthe subject Nursing Care I, and in thethird year under the subject Child andAdolescent Nursing with Pediatrics. The exercises are conducted and moni-tored by university lecturers and tech-nical assistants. Clinical exercises givestudents a chance to learn the basicpractical skills required to directlyconduct bedside nursing care and bedside medical and technical proce-dures. The group consists of 10 to 14students to ensure optimum workingconditions. Lecturers and technical assistants will encourage you, foster

teamwork, and motivate you for activework. A nursing intervention is stagedand conducted on models in front of agroup of students. During the inter-vention, students are advised on howto conduct the procedure correctly and to take into account all the possi-ble factors in treating a patient. At the end of the exercises, studentstake a test exam consisting of a written and practical part. Once yousuccessfully pass the test exam, youcan enroll for clinical practice in aclinical environment. Clinical exer-cises are also conducted for other subjects, according to the curriculum.

CLINICALPRACTICE

An important aspect of achieving pro-fessional competencies lies in clinicaltraining. At the Faculty of HealthCare Jesenice, we call this clinicalpractice. We take great care in organi -zing, leading, conducting and assess-ing clinical practice. We know justhow important it is to have a high-quality clinical practice in our clinicalbases to assure that our graduatesachieve their professional qualifica-tions and competencies. Besides thespecified curriculum objectives, clinical practice also offers students a chance to familiarize themselveswith the health care system in detail, and to develop their professional iden-tity and professional values. Through

clinical practice, students get to knowdifferent areas of nursing and get thefirst idea of where they would like towork after graduation. At the sametime, employees at clinical basesmight identify some students as theirpotential future co-workers.

Clinical practice has to be conductedwell, which represents a challenge forall the parties involved - for FHCJ, foryou as the students, and for the healthcare institutions. The percentage ofclinical practice in the curriculum isset by the EU Directive, and amountsto at least 50 % of the study program.Attendance in clinical practice ismandatory. In cases of well-justified

reasons of absence, any missed hoursmust be substituted later. Once a student has successfully passed clinicalpractice, they can enter an exam andon that basis enroll in the next year of study. Part of the clinical practicein the curriculum is defined as a 40-hour a week workload to be conducted for different areas of nursing in the form of a summercourse. The institutions registered as clinical bases of the FHCJ mustfirst acquire the status of an educa-tional institution at the Ministry ofHealth of Slovenia, according to theadopted rules, so that the Faculty ofHealth Care Jesenice can organizeclinical practice at that institution.

Clinical practice is led and coordina -ted by habilitated university lecturersand other university teaching profes-sionals. It is also conducted by habili-tated experts from clinical bases andclinical mentors who have been addi-tionally trained to become studentmentors. The Faculty of Health CareJesenice has 527 registered clinicalmentors in 19 clinical bases. Thesebases are: Jesenice General Hospital;Health Centre Jesenice; Health CentreRadovljica; Health Centre Bled;Health Centre [kofja Loka; HealthCentre Kranj; Health Centre Tr`i~;Health Centre Ljubljana – Basic emergency first aid infirmary; Train-ing, Occupation and Care CenterRadovljica; Psychiatric Hospital Be-gunje; University Psychiatric Clinic

PROMOTION?

“Health promotion or health strength-ening is a process that enables indivi -duals and community to enlargecon trol over health determinants andby this improve the health.” (WHO,Ottawa charter, 1986). In accordance to this, FHCJ wishes to establish newknowledge on health promotion and tobecome educational and disseminationcentre for health promotion. Health promotion study program is organised in accordance with directivesof WHO, European union, OECD andwith national plans and all these strate-

gic documents emphasize the meaningof greater investments in preventivecare and health promotion. Program iscomparable with 4 European universi-ties: University of Bergen, Norway(Department of Health Promotion andDevelopment), University of EasternFinland/Faculty of health sciences (De-partment of Nursing Science), Univer-sity of Brussels (Department of PublicHealth), Swansea University, UK(School of Human Health Sciences).Health promotion as part of publichealth is defined as science that focusespopu lation health, research and organi-sation of social systems to improvepopulation health. This leads to thirdunique characteristic of master levelHealth promotion program – creatinginteractions between population needsand systematic arrangements. The pro-gram is highly applicative and researchoriented. It is the first program that isfounded in proposals for reconceptuali-sation of Slovenian public health andthe first program that has competenciesto create enough experts to actualizehealth strengthening policy.

STUDY PROGRAM

Study program Health promotion isbased on European Masters in HealthPromotion (EUMAHP) and at the sametime following international direc tivesin context of WHO, Health 21, The association of School of public health in the European Region (ASPHER),

Second level study program Healthpromotion will educate and profession-ally train individuals for health promo-tion. These professionals will know howto promote health in all periods of lifeand all situations (mental health, chronic conditions management…).Graduates will be able to re-shape/ad-just existing public health programsand practice according to recognized

needs of individuals. Study program isvery important to shape qualitative de-velopment of public health. In Sloveniathere is no accredited program thatwould offer education in the health pro-motion field. Though, a lot of healthcare workers already practice healthpromotion activities, using existingknowledge with no systematic overviewor control.

Increasing public health problems ofmodern societies call for preventive actions that decrease costs of diseaseprevention. WHO states clearly to empower health promotion activities in all social environments and tostrengthen, protect and maintain health through all social sectors.

OTHERSABOUT US

”»I have had the pleasure of working with Dean Skela Savi~ and her staffsince 2006, as the VSZNJ developed and implemented programs andcourses, began holding regular conferences, and actively participated inother aspects of the development of nursing education and research inSlovenia. I have shared in the development and delivery of Bologna 2nd

Cycle masters courses, particularly “Ethics in Nursing Practice” and “Teaching and Mentoring”. I have also participated in research con ferences and doctoral program planning meetings. During this time, I have seen that the Dean, staff and students always aim for high standardsand have achieved an impressive degree of success. This was recognized bythe College being awarded Faculty status in 2014 – a considerable achieve-ment in such a short time. It has been rewarding for me to share this journey with my colleagues and friends at the Fakulteta za Zdravstvo Jesenice, and I look forward to their continuing success.«
