History

British Association of Sport & Medicine (BASM) was founded in 1953 by 12 doctors & scientists.

Sports Scientists formed their own group (BASS) in the 1980s.

Team medical cover was very random until 1970/80s

BASM introduced courses in 1970s to train doctors and physiotherapists

The Institute of Sports Medicine (ISM) gave lectures in London from the 1970s

BASM started advanced courses in 1990s The Society of Apothecaries introduced a

Sports Medicine Diploma in 1988 Universities (London, Cardiff, Glasgow, Bath)

History

BASM has held an Annual Congress since the 1960s

The London Sports Medicine Institute (LSMI) was formed at St Bartholomew's in 1986

It became the National Sports Medicine Institute (NSMI) in 1992 but was dissolved in 2003.

After the 1986 Commonwealth Games, the Scottish Medical Colleges established a Board of Sports Medicine and Diploma

History

The Duke of Edinburgh urged the ISM to establish a working party whose recommendations led to the Intercollegiate Board for Sport & Exercise Medicine (IABSEM) in 1998

In February 2005 the DoH recognised the speciality of Sport & Exercise Medicine

The Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (RCP London & RCS Edinburgh) accepted first Diplomates in September 2007.

The Award of the Olympic Games to London in 2005 was helped by an announcement that SEM Training would be introduced & registrars were

appointed.

Some of those registrars have completed their training and found consultant posts though very

few exist within the NHS

Most job opportunities lie in the private sector (professional sport). Some Governing Bodies

have their own SEM Doctors/Medical Advisors

Page 9: AN INTRODUCTION TO SPORT AND EXERCISE MEDICINE Dr Patrick Milroy

BASM became BASEM in 1999It is not a Trade Union, so cannot fight for

professional fees for its members. In medicine, only the BMA is legally able to negotiate.

It has approximately 1,000 members, of whom the majority have a General Practice background

The United Kingdom Association of Doctors in Sport (UKADIS) broke away from 1997-2005.

With sports players now becoming so valuable, there have been considerable difficulties for

doctors to obtain insurance.
