Chaplains Chat... Back at the end of September, some of you attended the
‘Finishing Well’ workshop that I led, which dealt with things that you can do to help make things a little easier for your family after you pass away. Some of the discussion that followed that session led to ques-tions involving not just planning a memorial service, but also involved discussion about a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order and what to do with this document, if you have a DNR. The suggestion was to have a copy placed in your red folder, if you are an Independent Living resi-dent. I found out later, Service is willing to put a copy in your file that she has in her office too. For those in Assisted Living and Healthcare that document should be part of your medical chart that is at a Nurse’s Office or station.
The discussion led us into talking about other areas of Ad-vanced Directives or Advance Care Planning. Having been at Manor Park for more than 12 years, I am aware how making these plans and en-listing a Healthcare Advocate can also ease the burden of family members when doctors ask family members to make difficult decisions. When you have talked with your family members or a friend about what your wishes and desires are concerning your care, in the event you can not speak for yourself, there is a sense of relief and respect for what you want done, or what you do not want done, when a medical crises happens. The im-portant thing is to get these directives or this planning down on paper, have a healthcare advocate and have this document witnessed and nota-rized. The plan is not to leave it until an emotionally filled time in the ER or in a hospital room and doctors say they want your family member(s) to make a decision concerning your medical now when you cannot speak for yourself.
You may be wondering, ‘how do I start with all this?’ In September I went through a training course and became a First Steps ACP (Advanced Care Planning) Certified Facilitator. In the months to come, I will be holding meetings at various times, to help you become familiar with Advanced Care Planning, and knowing what to do to follow through with any decisions you make concerning such plans. Please look for sign-up sheets to see when and where these meetings will take place.
I know this is not the easiest or most exciting topic to think and talk about, but in the long run getting these decisions down on paper will be a big help to your family in difficult times.
Let me leave you with this thought, even though we generally do not think of this verse as relating to writing out these types of documents: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 NKJV.
Blessings, Chaplain Bill Billett BCC
If I can help you in any way, as Chaplain, please call me (699-3404), leave a
note on or under my office door or send me a message by email to [email protected]

Even though this crazy West Texas weather does not show it, the Fall season is upon us. And Fall is the perfect time to prepare for the up-coming holidays and the winter weather. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about getting your winter clothes out and storing up your summer wear. It is also time to start thinking about getting out and preparing your holiday decorations. The most efficient way is accomplish this is to start organizing your clos-ets. How to get started:
Start by removing all the clothes and accessories from your closets and organizing items by type: shirts, pants, suits, dresses, coats, shoes, belts, and accessories. As you are organizing these items set aside things that you no longer wear or accessories that you no longer use. Consider which items can be donat-ed to local charities or given away. Once this is accomplished you can follow the same plan for your holi-day decorations. For a nominal fee the Housekeeping department can assist with these tasks. November Wellness Newsletter The Walking Group is coming to an end for the year! The last day will be November 1st. But
remember, there are still plenty of ways to get your cardio and steps in. Here are a few examples:
•Walk inside from the Wallace building through to the Younger building (5x back and forth is a
mile!)
•Go to the Wellness Center to use the cardio equipment, such as the treadmill
•Wait until later in the day once there’s more sunshine to walk outside to enjoy nature
We will be having a Random Acts of Kindness
Challenge for the rest of 2019! There is a wall of
written cards from anonymous people in the Well-
ness Center. Come by and grab what you need, vary-
ing in sections from Love to Patience to Faith to
many more. Then, if you feel like giving back, there
will also be a section to write your own card. It
would be for someone else who may need it. Let’s
try to spread some kindness to one another here
during this time of holidays.
Call Jennifer or Tierra at (432)699-3411 if you want to start up
at the Wellness Center or have any other questions.
Also a big THANK YOU to everyone who has been ac-
tive and/or participating in our events. Most recently
of last month, Active Aging Week, Matter of Balance,
and the Alzheimer’s Walk. It’s great to see you guys
take all parts of wellness into consideration for better
overall health!

Fire Safety for Older Adults FA-221 | October 2018
PLAN YOUR ESCAPE
Planning what to do in case of fire can make the difference between life and death. Prac-tice how to get to your outside meeting place quickly. In a fire, you may have only seconds to escape safely after you hear a smoke alarm. Know and practice two ways out of every
room in your home. Make sure all doors and windows that lead
outside open easily. Clear all clutter that may block your es-
cape route or make you trip or fall. Have an outside meeting place a safe dis-
tance in front of your home where first re-sponders can see you.
Practice your home fire escape drill at least twice a year.
If you live in an apartment, use the stairs to escape, not the elevator.
Plan your escape around your abilities. If you use a wheelchair or walker or if you may have problems escaping from your home, plan ahead and let your fire depart-ment, family, building manager or neigh-bors know.
Keep eyeglasses, keys, hearing aids and a phone within reach next to your bed.

Manor Park Endowment Funds Manor Park has two types of Endowment Funds. The first is an unrestricted Endowment Fund that is available for support of Manor Park’s operations and may be Board of Trustee
designated as to the specific use. These unrestricted funds have also been designated to support financial aid for long-time residents of Manor Park who evidence inability to pay the
monthly fees set by the Board and who can meet the requirements for Medicaid support.
When memorials are designated to support the “Endowment” this is the fund where they are directed.
The second type of endowment is a permanently restricted Endowment Fund. These en-dowments are established by individual donors and they are subject to the donor’s re-
strictions. The corpus of the endowment is invested with the income and gains being availa-
ble for a specific purpose. An individual donor may establish a permanent Endowment Fund in their name or another person of their choice for a minimum donation of $25,000. Donors
may restrict the use of the income to support the purpose that they wish. Additional contri-
butions may be added to the endowment by the donor or others to grow the principal of these permanent Endowment Funds. This is a wonderful way for you to leave a legacy that
will perpetually support Manor Park’s mission to provide quality homes, healthcare and ser-
vices for adults.
