Kids celebrate by buying gifts, flowers, and cards for their mothers. Do you know who started the holiday? Did you know that she later tried to get rid of Mother’s Day? Ann Reeves Jarvis wanted to help mothers. She started clubs for mothers in the 1800s. She wanted to help mothers take care of their babies. People called her “Mother Jarvis.” Ann started “Mother’s Friendship Day” during the Civil War. She wanted women to help the country make peace. Ann Reeves Jarvis had a daughter named Anna. Anna wanted to help mothers, too. She started a Mother’s Day celebration where she lived in May of 1908. Then, she tried to spread her idea. Other states and towns started to celebrate. In 1914, Anna shared her idea with the president. He made Mother’s Day a national holiday! FAST FACT: Anna Jarvis never married or had any children of her own. Anna Jarvis wanted Mother’s Day to be simple. She wanted children to visit their moms and thank them. However, things changed when the holiday became popular. Card and flower companies started to sell gifts for Mother’s Day. They wanted to make money. Anna was so angry! She did not want the holiday to be about gifts. Anna fought the card and flower companies. She even took some to court!
