Page 2: Analysis of double page spreads

Mise en scene created by graffiti wall background represents the street and indie image of rap music

The main image shows Dizzee in his roots of street rap music and gives a unique and individual background to the double page spread

The page number, NME logo and

date are there to inform the readers of what page they are on so they can find the correct article, and also keep the NME house style throughout the magazine, and inform readers of the date to suggest what issue it is.

The byline gives credit for the author and the photographer that made the double page spread.

The sub-heading gives more of an insight into what the article is about, and introduces it without giving too much away. The name Dizzee Rascal is in bold to show who the article is about

The main heading is a play on words suggesting violence and crime in Dizzee’s past life with the use of ‘from tags’. The title hints that his life has gone from a life of crime to a life of music and fame. The typography of the title is big, bold in black capitals, to stand out. It is laid at opposing angles and slants to carry on the unique styling.

The caption saying Dizzee to let readers know who the person in the picture is and who the article is about

The second image used in the background is a boom box stereo and beer bottles. It shows the other side of his life on the opposite page, with music and parties, instead of the graffiti and street crime.

The text starts with a drop capital Y to indicate where the articles and to stand out so it draws the readers eye to the article

Analysis of written article

1The article itself is basically about how Dizzee Rascal has risen to fame with his rap music, and has gone from a life of street crime, violence and graffiti to a life of fame, music and rich friends.

The style of the article is indie/street hip hop – unconventional and unique. It follows the styling of the rapper Dizzee and his lifestyle to make the layout and design of the double page spread.

It is written in 4 short columns each of approx75-100 words, so the article isn't too heavy and shows as a light but interesting read for the audience.

The main heading/headline is quite dramatic as it draws in the eye of the readers. It takes up around ½ of the page – more than the main article does, and is quite unconventional just like the rest of the magazine.

Analysis of double page spread 2Cosmopolitan Jessie J

The page number, NME logo and date are there to inform the readers of what page they are on so they can find the correct article, and also keep the Cosmopolitan house style throughout the magazine, and inform readers of the date to suggest what issue it is.

The caption has a unique nickname of the star, to suggest it is about her as well as giving it a fun womanly style

The main heading is split into two different fonts and colours, to show the name of the star and the idea of the article separately. It is in a bright colour to make it stand out, but at the same time keeps with the overall colour and style scheme of the spread

An inserted image of Jessie shows a past event in her life which the readers may be interested in, and which the article might talk about – giving further insight into it for the readers interest. The image is in the style of a photograph, to suggest a snapshot into her life.

The text starts with a drop capital Y to indicate where the articles and to stand out so it draws the readers eye to the article

The sub-heading gives more of an insight into what the article is about, and introduces it without giving too much away. It doesn’t say her name in it as it was in the main heading, unlike the first magazine. However instead talks about her career life and success in a snapshot, before the article

The main image is a photo of Jessie J, looking very glamorous and sophisticated in her new life of fame and success. Her clothes and style fit in with the colour scheme and design of the double page layout to make the article look well designed and for a sophisticated audience

Page 5: Analysis of double page spreads

The article itself is basically about Jessie J’s rise to fame, through the different stages of her career with writing songs for people, to going to America to find herself and her personal health issues, as well as her inspirations and memories of her rise to fame.

The style of the article is sophisticated and glamorous, with the pop star design and layout to match her lifestyle, music genre and fashion sense.

It is written in 3 short columns about half the page down, in short snappy question and answer styling. This makes the article a light and fun read for the audience – not too dull.

The main heading/headline is about a third of the page big, and talks about Jessie J being a superstar rising. This makes an interesting introduction to the article and is designed to entice readers.
