TheoristsDaniel Chandler
He believes that conventional definitions of genres tend to be based on the notion that they constitute particular conventions of content such as themes of settings and/form (including structure and style) which are shared by text which
are regarded as belonging to them.
Pete Fraser Lyrics – establish a genre mood, key lines may only play part in the visuals
Music – Tempo of the track drives the editing.Genre – Reflected through mise en scene, themes, performance, cinematography, editing.
Cinematography – Camera may move to accompany performers or circle them to create lots of drama. Lots of close ups to create viewer intimacy and to emphasize voice.
Tom Ryall Genre provides a framework of structuring rules in the shape of patterns forms, styles, structures, which act as a form of
supervision over the work of production of film makers and the work of reading by the audience.
QuotesRichard Dyer – “Genres are pleasurable because they offer escapist fantasies into fictional
worlds that remove the boredom of reality”
Steve Neale – “Genre is a set of great expectations”
Genre – Pop – Lyrics Analysis The day I first met you
You told me you'd never fall in loveBut now that I get you
I know fear is what it really was
Now here we are,So close yet so far.
Haven't I passed the test? When will you realize,
Baby I'm not like the rest
Don't wanna break your heartWanna give your heart a breakI know you're scared it's wrongLike you might make a mistake
There's just one life to liveAnd there's no time to waste, to waste
So let me give your heart a break, your heart a breakLet me give your heart a break, your heart a break
Oh yeah, yeah
On Sunday you went home aloneThere were tears in your eyes
I called your cell phone, my loveBut you did not reply
The world is ours. If we want it,We can take it if you just take my hand.
There’s no turning back now.Baby, try to understand
Don't wanna break your heartWanna give your heart a breakI know you're scared it's wrongLike you might make a mistake
There's just one life to liveAnd there's no time to waste, to waste
So let me give your heart a break, your heart a breakLet me give your heart a break, your heart a break
When he first met her (Demi),he made it seem like he just wasn’t that type to fall in
love, and he’s telling her to not get her hopes up because he’s not going to fall in
love with her.
Demi’s hopeful lover only scoffed at the thought of love because it’d been a painful experience for him in the past, and he wants to shield himself from
that happening again.
They’re close to falling in love but he won’t allow himself to
love her back.
She doesn’t want to break his heart, she isn't like his last girlfriend or partner. She doesn’t
want to hurt him.
Demi makes it clear that she cares for this person, and that she doesn’t want to break his heart or hurt him. She then flips the phrase “break your heart”. Demi says that she
knows that her lover is scared that she is going to break his
heart. She also states that you only have one life, and wants to
let her lover know that she wants them to live hers with
him.
Its their life and they can do what they want with it , they cant back down now
that they're falling in love. She wants him to understand she wont hurt him
He went home upset, and when Demi tried to call and comfort him he ignored her calls. Avoiding her
and the situation that they are facing.

There's just so much you can takeGive your heart a break
Let me give your heart a break, your heart a breakOh yeah, yeah
When your lips are on my lipsThen our hearts beat as one
But you slip out of my fingertipsEvery time you run, whoa-oh-whoa-oh-oh
Don't wanna break your heartWanna give your heart a breakI know you're scared it's wrongLike you might make a mistake
There's just one life to liveAnd there's no time to waste, to waste
So let me give your heart a break
‘Cause you’ve been hurt beforeI can see it in your eyes
You try to smile it away, some things you can’t disguise
Don’t wanna break your heartBaby, I can ease the ache, the ache
So let me give your heart a break, your heart a break
Let me give your heart a break, your heart a breakThere’s just so much you can take
Your heart a breakLet me give your heart a break, your heart a break
Oh yeah, yeah
The day I first met youYou told me you'd never fall in love
There is just so much you can take before you have to give up. Demi believes
that she can make him feel better and heel his heart.
Every time they kiss its magical but every time he
starts falling for her he stops himself and gets scared and
becomes distant again.
Demi makes it clear that she cares for this person, and that she doesn’t want to break his heart or hurt him. She then flips the phrase “break your heart”. Demi says that she
knows that her lover is scared that she is going to break his
heart. She also states that you only have one life, and wants to
let her lover know that she wants them to live hers with
him.
Demi can tell the reason he’s so reluctant to love is because he’s been hurt before and he doesn’t
want it to happen again. He tries to smile away the pain, but she knows what’s going on. She wants to make him feel better. She knows his heart is still hurting, and she feels that if only he would let her in, she could
make him feel better and potentially ‘ease the ache’ he is
feeling.
.
Repetition of the first line. Basically stating that the first time she met him, he said he wouldn’t fall in love, but he
has.

Genre – Pop – Video Analysis
Lyric videoThe lyric video was released on December 23, 2011 on
Lovato's YouTube channel and then was later was released by VEVO on March 20, 2012. In the video, Lovato is sitting on the swing and writing the lyrics in a journal, next to a waterfall and a firepit, she is thought to be writing her thoughts in the form of the song. At the end of the video, Demi closes her journal and leaves it
on the swing.
Demi Lovato – Give Your Heart a Break
Official videoThe music video was filmed in late February 2012 and released on April 2, 2012. The video was directed by Justin Francis. Lovato explained about the video, saying: "The new music video, I'm basically trying to convince a guy that I didn't break his heart, and we get into a fight and I try
to win him over again" and "So I do something special for him at the end of the song“.
The video has elements of both narrative and performance, as Demi who is the actual artist takes part in the story of the video, but does preform as well. The video is largely performance based, however in the in-between parts there is a love story shown which is highlighted in the
song and in the theme of the video, love.
SynopsisThe video begins with a shot reverse shot of the protagonists(Demi and her love interest). There is then a long shot of the pair which then cuts to a close up, then to a
medium shot of Demi hanging up the phone, it then cuts back to the love interest where is seen to be angry as he swings open a door and walks inside. Which suggests there is a problem between the two and perhaps they may be in some sort of dispute, or heartbreak which is a convention of pop videos typically. There is then a performance
element in the narrative element, where Demi begins to sing, and she recalls memories of the two painting the apartment walls and messing around.
In the second shot, we as the audience are shown photographs framed on the wall and the desk of the two together, again reinforcing the love story theme. The lighting used within the shots are soft when shooting Demi, however when shooting the love interest, played by Alex Bechet, there is quite harsh lighting, reinforcing his masculinity.
It then cuts to a shot of the male sitting down on a sofa looking upset, he picks up a photograph of him and Demi, and the puts it face down, so the picture is no longer visible. This reinforces and enhances the theme of heart break. The video then cuts of to a different setting, where it is Demi on her own performing the song again, there is one single spotlight on the artist, similar to how it would appear on stage. She is wearing black clothing, which contrasts with the bright lighting, additionally this contrasts
with the character she is portraying in the narrative side of the video, who is seen wearing much brighter and natural colored clothing. In between the shots of her performing, she is shown collecting pictures of her and her ‘boyfriend’, she turns over one of the photographs and ‘the day we met’ is written on
the back, with a heart. There is then a long shot of the female walking away from her chair, and then the shot is cute to her walking down the street whilst performing the song. There are various flashbacks to memories the two have shared.
The rest of the video cuts between the shots of the artist performing the song, flashback shots of the couple looking happy and in love, and shots of the artist sticking photographs of them on a wall as collage. Each picture has a memory behind it, which is recounted by her. In all of these memories the two seem to look happy, this contrasts with Demi’s facial expression when she is sticking up the photographs, as she looks sad and there is a gloomy feel. Which suggests the two are going through a rough patch
or are maybe in a argument, which also commonly seen in this genre of music.
There is then close up of Demi's legs walking away, which then cuts to a medium shot of the male character looking out of the window with a shocked expression. It is then revealed that Demi has created large collage of pictures, depicting a picture of them smiling, which was previously shown earlier in the video as it was the picture of the two
on the day they first met.
This suggests that everything will be fine after this scene, again another convention of many pop videos, the happy ending.
