Purpose of panels

• Panels allow you to get quick insight into the survey results

• They are not a substitute for an analysis tool such as SAS, Excel or a GIS

• Data can be shown at a whole of of survey level, for example a table showing all records and all questions, or as a single question optionally grouped by another question

Managing Panels

• Panel Actions– Adding– Re-sizing– Moving– Editing– Adding to a report– Deleting

• Beware of!– Too many table panels

• If you have large surveys with thousands of records and hundreds of columns then drawing these as tables in the browser can take some time. In these cases it is a good idea to only have one large table panel at any one time.

Panel Types

• There are 4 types of panels– Graph

• Show the results of a question

– Table– Map– Media

• Show the pictures, audio and videos from a survey

Change Data View - Sidebar Information

• At the top right of each panel is an icon “<“• This opens a sidebar that lets you manipulate the

panel data• On a table survey view you can select which of the

survey forms to show (Each “Begin Repeat” starts a new form)

• For a graph or map it allows you to select the options to show from a select_one or select_multiple

Exercise: Create a “Whole of survey” panel

• Add Panel• Select panel type of graph, table, media, map– Graphs can only be used with questions

Graph and Table “Question” panels

• Edit the panel that you previously created• Select panel type of graph, table, media– Media panels only work with the whole of survey

• Update the title• Select a question• Save

Exercise: Group By

• Graphs and Table panels can show a Question grouped by another question, for example– Problems faced grouped by gender– Average age grouped by marital status

• Maps can show a question grouped by regions– These region files need to be pre-loaded or can be

generated (see next section)

5 - REPORTS

Basic

Page 21: Analysis. Session Objective Understand how to analyse data on the server © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd2.

(c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd 21

Creating a report - 1

• Each report has a single “item” from a survey attached to it, one of:– A picture, audio file, video file– A graph– A table– A map

• To create the report you select one of these items– For picture, audio, video; right click on the item– For graph, table, map; left click on the “up arrow” at the

top of the panel

Page 22: Analysis. Session Objective Understand how to analyse data on the server © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd2.

Publishing a report - 1

• Creating a report does not make it available to other people. You need to send them a link to the report.

• This can be done in several ways:– Sending an email– Embedding in a Wordpress blog– Sending a tweet– Posting to a Facebook group

• First select the “Reports” menu option in the Analysis module

Page 24: Analysis. Session Objective Understand how to analyse data on the server © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd2.

(c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd 24

Publishing a report – 2 Filtering reports

• The report list can be filtered by time or region– Drag the end points of the timeline at the top of the page

to change the reports that are shown– Select a region of the map to change the reports shown

Page 25: Analysis. Session Objective Understand how to analyse data on the server © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd2.

(c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd 25

Viewing a report

• The report link that is published by email or Facebook shows the report on a web page

• There are 2 menu buttons on this web page that the viewer can select to export the report into– MS Word– MS Excel

Page 26: Analysis. Session Objective Understand how to analyse data on the server © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd2.

(c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd 26

Reports and Security

• A password is not required to access a report• However the link to the report contains a long

random set of characters– 1154d8c0-0984-4513-aabd-f863cef2b812

• Hence the need to publish a report as these characters can’t be guessed

• So reports are secure until they are published, then anyone who is given the link can view the report

Page 27: Analysis. Session Objective Understand how to analyse data on the server © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd2.

Create a Hex Grid for Aggregation - 2

• Fill in the details for the hex grid• Make sure the name has no

spaces and is in lower case• Use the mouse to select the

center one cell in the grid• Also use the mouse to select the

boundaries of the grid by pressing the shift key

• Make sure the cell width is reasonable relative to the overall grid size or it will take a long time to generate the grid

Using OCHA icons on a map - 1

• You may want to collect data on things and people that have an OCHA icon assigned to them

• For example

• These icons can be shown on a map at the location the data was collected

Page 36: Analysis. Session Objective Understand how to analyse data on the server © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd2.

(c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd 36

Using OCHA icons on a map – 2 – Specify Survey

• Add a select_one question and specify the names of the options in the choices qorksheet as the names of OCHA icons

• Available names are listed in this file https://smap-suite.googlecode.com/files/ocha%20symbols.txt

• For example:

Using OCHA icons on a map – 3 – Show Map

• Create a map panel• Choose the select_one question that collected the

OCHA icon value• Specify the question function as “OCHA Icons”• Save

that you want to discard.• Enter a reason• The color of the cell will change to red• This survey instance will now not appear in exported results or be

used for question level analysis on the server, for example in graphs

• You can re-enable this survey instance by repeating the above steps which will toggle the instance status back to “good”
