MARRIAGES AND DEATHS APPEARING IN THE ROCHESTER (NY) GEM IN 1834-35
The Rochester Gem described itself as a semi-monthly literary and mis
cellaneous journal, devoted to polite literature (essays and poetry),
history, biography, morality, sentiment, wit et cetera. The fine slogan,
"We'll grasp the works of nature and of art To raise the Genius and
mend the heart," just about tells it all. it was in its sixth volume in
1834, the year that Rochester, NY was chartered. The community of 12,252
was also served by The Rochester Morning Advertiser, a fact that did not
prevent the Gem from indulging in some basic journalism. Fires were big
news and the conflagration that devastated the New York City publishing
district was highlighted, as was the one that swept "The Hermitage," the
home of then President Jackson. What is interesting to the genealogist,
however, is the occasional inclusion of marriage and death notices. Ones
gleaned from 1834 and 1835 are presented, followed by a piece devoted to
George Robert Twelve Hewes, last survivor of the Boston Tea Party. While
writing styles have changed, issues have not. Smoking in Germany, ardent
spirits and other social problems were confronted. The editor also put
his integrity on the line when he stated, "... Some persons make a great
mistake, and think it is the editor and not his newspaper, that they buy
for two dollars a year."
It is notable that one of the marriages going unreported was one that
merged The Gem with The Ladies Amulet early in 1834. No matter, the con
tent and style remained unchanged. And now, what you have been waiting
for, marriages and deaths published during the years 1834 and 1835 in
The Rochester Gem and Ladies Amulet.

Pedestrianism and Temperance
A great match race, we learn from the Boston Centinel, is soon to take
place between Col. Haskett, the champion of abstinence, and a gentleman
of Georgia, who places more reliance upon the virtues of beef and brandy.
The latter, it seems, has challenged the former to contend with him for
a distance of 3,000 miles, and the match will come off on the first day
of June, over the road between Taunton and Boston. The challenger is
to eat per day, as a minimum allowance, 1 lb. beef, 1 1b. bread, and to
drink 3 glasses of 4th proof brandy and a half pint Madeira. The parties
are to be on the road at the day, or half forfeit. The challenger sets
forth the bet at $5,000 to $20,000, but the money matters are to be ad
justed in Carolina. The colonel is to eat his old allowance of bread and
water.

Last of the Boston Tea Party
GEORGE ROBERT TWELVE HEWES
GEORGE ROBERT TWELVE HEWES, the subject of this
article, was one of the patriot band that drowned
the English Tea, in Boston Harbour, in 1773, and
is now the only one living of that party. He re
sides near Richfield Springs, Otsego Co., N.Y. in
the enjoyment of sound health,at the advanced age
of about 100 years.
Those who would have great deeds, and splendid
achievements, alone entitle one to a place in the
biographic page, cannot deny to the venerable
subject of this memoir, that dignity. The event
in which the name, and the renown of Hewes is in
separably connected, has already been exhibited
to the world in history, as conspicuously as the
constellations in the heavens: not that event which was designated only
by the destruction of a few hundred chests of Tea, which required only
an effort of physical power, and might be effected by the momentary im
pulse of an infuriated populace; but an event which was to put at de
fiance the power of the British Parliament; which was to commence a ref
ormation in the political condition of the world, and exhibit the rights
of man in a new blaze of glory; an event in which a blow was to be
struck, which to tyrants throughout the world, should echo the knell of
their departing hour; an event which gave to the American character a
renown, magnanimity, for fortitude and heroic achievement, unprecedented
in the annals of the world.
Events seem to have been so ordered, that an unusual number of venerable
veterans and sages, from the front ranks of our revolutionary conflict,
have been permitted to outride not only the storm of war, but the more
fatal devastations of Time, as the living monuments of their well earned
fame, and to teach by their example, that moral, intellectual, and phys
ical endowments, had proved efficient, in wresting from the hand of
oppression, the fortunes of their country. The last of those immortal
patriots, who sealed their names to the declaration of our independence,
and proclaimed it to the world, has but recently disappeared from the
drama of human life; and one of those, who with the "tomahawk and club",
vetoed the unrighteous doings of the British Parliament sixty years ago,
yet lives, and exhibits to our view a bold and manly visage, of which
the above is but an imperfect representation, and may well inspire our
veneration and respect, for the vigor, the integrity, and the intelli
gence of the mind, to which it is an appropriate index.

ANCESTOR TABLES
This continues the series of ancestor tables submitted by members. As in
past issues, numbering is in the Jacobus fashion. Generations are spaced
for greater delineation. Names are followed by year of birth and place,
year of death and place. Tables date back only as far as the immigrants,
who are designated (I). Offspring accompanying the immigrants or coming
separately are not accorded this mark. Unknowns are represented by the
use of question marks and approximate dates are set off through under
lining.

THE Y AND WHEREFORE
Carl Yaztrzemski, erstwhile baseball player, changed the initial letter
in his surname from J to Y to preserve proper pronunciation. J is a com-
paritively modern addition to the modified Latin alphabet we employ and
has evolved into a far different sound from the I that sired it. Julius
Caesar would respond more readily to a greeting in Germany or the north
ern countries than he would in lands using the 'Romance' languages, that
have obviously influenced our modern American English. Which brings us
somewhat circuitously to the point of this insert. If it wasn't disturb
ing enough to have to use good old solid Y, which is impossible to mis
pronounce, for a J, what about the case of ye and ye? The archaic ye as
pronoun for you and thou offers no problem, it is as the definite arti
cle where misunderstanding sets in. While you are poring over those old
wills and other ancient documents, keep in mind that the y in ye comes
down from the old Anglo Saxon runic alphabet, the futhorc. Th, thorn,
is the third letter and the symbol resembles a y, and is pronounced th.
Thus, properly, Ye Olde Bottle Shoppe is The Old Bottle Shop, only the
prices are new.
QUERIES
Was the John Niles, immigrant who died at Braintree in
1694, the son of John Nyle and Johane Paviot baptised in Powerstock with
West Milton, Dorset 19 April 1607? If his age is 'reckoned' at about 90
at his death this offers some propect. This has been explored but with
what results?
SANDYS-WALKER-HUTCHINSON: James Sandys (1622-1695) has been assigned a
number of different pedigrees, attempting to link him with Edwin, Arch
bishop of York (1516-1588), all extremely speculative to my mind. Does
someone have anything substantial on this link? Who were the John Walker
and Katherine (or Sarah) Hutchinson who were the parents of Sarah, James
Sandys' wife?
LANPHERE-PENDLETON: Desire information on Elizabeth Lanphere who married
James Pendleton (1689-1753). Father is given as George Lanphere who died
1731.
WELBY-BULKELEY: Correspondence solicited from researchers interested in
the early antecedents of Olive Welby (1604-1691), a daughter of Richard
Weiby and Frances Bulkeley.
