1 COOPERATIVE PRESCHOOL PHILOSOPHY A Cooperative Preschool is, as the name implies, teachers and parents working
cooperatively to establish an environment in which a child can grow and develop
according to his or her individual needs. We believe the involvement and commitment of
the parents in a Co-op reinforces the happy experiences for the young child in one of
his/her first ventures away from home.
The preschool is a child sized world devoted to a child's main business - playing, which is
laying the groundwork for more specific and formal academic learning which will follow
in years to come.
Here at Anchor Bay Co-Op Nursery, Inc., we believe that our program should provide a
stimulating and creative atmosphere that allows a child to function where he/she is
developmentally, and at the same time stimulate him/her to the next stage of growth
without forcing. The environment is carefully planned to help the child learn to be
independent and to make choices. Yet, there are limits set that make the child feel secure.
Preschool provides an opportunity for a child to become familiar with a group setting, to
develop self-expression, creativity, a sense of responsibility, and an interest in learning.
Through varied activities, a child is allowed to broaden the spectrum of his/her preschool
experience.
Preschool is a learning experience for parents as well as children. Parents will be able to
observe children and various methods of child guidance and problem solving. A Co-Op
preschool helps parents gain greater understanding and enjoyment of their own children
as they share this very important chapter in their child's life.
2 BEFORE SCHOOL BEGINS
2.1 Orientation
There will be an orientation program in August to acquaint the parents with the purposes,
mechanics, and techniques of a cooperative nursery school. This meeting is very
important, and attendance is required by one parent. Both are welcomed.
2.2 Worker Bees/Classroom Assistants
Parents are assigned to Worker Bee teams at the beginning of the year.
Each team has a scheduled day to assist with classroom cleanings, and to
make play dough. On average, depending on enrollment, the WORKER
BEES perform their team duties 1-2 times per year. Parents also assist the
teacher in the classroom on a rotating basis. This involves bringing a snack
and napkins, or drink and cups, helping set-up before class, participating
with the class activities and assisting in clean-up after class. Parents assist in the
classroom on a monthly rotation on average about 2 days per month. On the days

parents/approved workers assist in the classroom, their child is the special helper for the
day.
2.3 Health Requirements
The state license requires a certificate of health to be completed by the child’s physician.
Children MUST be immunized against DPT, Polio, Measles, Rubella, and
Mumps. The health form provided by the nursery school must be
completed by a physician and filed with the Nursery School Membership
Chairman. To obtain waiver information you must contact the St. Clair
County Health Department at: 810-987-5300
The child must have been examined in the 360-day period prior to the
opening day.
All health forms must be on file with the Membership Chairman before the child may
attend school.
Please inspect your child before sending him to school each day. Communicable diseases
such as a strep infection or conjunctivitis must be reported to the teacher. Fresh colds are
considered contagious for three days or 72 hours, following the first symptoms. Children
with fevers may not attend school until their temperature has been normal for 24 hours.
Parents should not assist at the nursery school if they have sore throats or colds.
3 WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A PRESCHOOL
EXPERIENCE
Many preschool parents wonder what will happen when their children are at preschool.
What will they learn, will their problems be solved, how will they act? Some, none, or
all of the behaviors noted below may come true. They are all normal behavior.
(Whenever "he/him/his" is mentioned "she/her/hers" is implied.)
Your child may come home very tired and irritable or all keyed up
the first weeks. Give him lunch and a nap if possible. This is a
brand new experience, and is very stimulating and tiring.
Your child may act differently on the days you participate.
Remember he is the most important child to you. Reassure him,
don't push him away.
Your normally outgoing child may be quiet at school. Don't push
him. Let him absorb everything at his own pace.
Your child will do things at home that he does not do at school and vice versa.
Your child may pick up new language at school. He may also pick up some new
behavior at school, some good and some bad. Don't necessarily blame this on the
school. These things will be picked up in any situation where children are together.
Relax and live through it.
Your child may come home with paint splatters and dust from the floor. Don't
scold. Dress him in clothes that wash easily. We are here for fun. Rubber soled
shoes are the safest to wear at school.
Your child may come home unhappy one day from school. Console him and help
him to measure up to the situation. Preschool is not always a completely happy

experience, but neither is life. Part of growing up is meeting these frustrations and
accepting them.
Your child may not want to come to school. Look for the reason. This too is
normal behavior and you need to gently insist a few times. If it continues, it may
help to talk to the teacher.
Your child may suddenly want you to stay with him in the middle of the year. Go
along with him and give him the extra support he may need.
The purpose of preschool is not to learn facts and bring home lots of finished projects.
We want him to have fun experiencing many group and individual activities and to learn
to adjust to people himself. You may be starting your role as an assistant to the teacher
for the very first time. Don't be afraid. Relax and enjoy yourself and the children. As you
observe other children, you may see yours in a new light too. You will find that his
behavior is probably more normal than you had imagined.
4. CLASSROOM/PRESCHOOL POLICIES 4.1 Child, Parent and Teacher In The Preschool
Talk with your child about the new environment and adventure before
the first day of school.
Remind him/her that mother/father will be helping at the preschool and that on
those days he/she will be the special helper.
Please dress children for play (soft-soled shoes are preferred) and prepared to
participate in activities which may require jumping or crawling on the floor. Play
clothes that can withstand stain and soil are best. Be sure your child is dressed
warmly in cool weather and has adequate clothing for outdoor play.
Please mark clothing that might be removed, including boots, book-bags, and
sweaters clearly with child's name.
If staff or volunteers become ill while at the child care center, they will be sent
home to prevent further spread of the illness. If children become ill while in our
care, the child will separated from the group to prevent further spread of the
illness to other children. Parent or emergency contact person will be required to
immediately pick up the child. The child will be made comfortable and will be
adequately supervised until picked up by the parent.
Children, staff, and volunteers cannot be present at the child care and will be
excluded if any of following exist:
a. Fever of 100 degrees - (must be fever free for 24 hours without the aid
of fever reducing medication in order to return to care)
b. Diarrhea- (must be symptom free for 24 hours without the aid of
medication to return to care)
c. Vomiting- (must be symptom free for 24 hours without the aid of
medication to return to care)
d. Rash (exception: mild diaper rash) and communicable diseases (such
as chicken pox, measles, lice, ringworm, pinkeye, scabies…etc) will

require documentation from a physician that you are clear to return to
child care.
R400.8155 (4)- Requires when the center becomes aware of a
communicable disease, centers are required to notify all parents of
children in care, not just the parents of children who had direct
contact/exposure to a communicable disease. Notification may be
made by posting the information in a conspicuous location at the
center, sending home written notification to parents, Emailing parents
and/or calling parents.
Notify the teacher of any allergies or serious illnesses. If the child is not well
enough to participate in outdoor play at home, he should not attend school. If you,
or your child, are unable to attend school for any reason, please call the teacher at
the school phone number and leave a message.
1 When You Assist
A. Classroom Responsibilities
The first few days a parent assists at the preschool may seem to be a hectic
experience. However, after you become accustomed to the room set-up and routine,
it is hoped that you will find it both enjoyable and educational. While in the nursery
you may observe how other children play and you will have a chance to discuss the
problems of childhood with other parents of young children after the sessions. It is
important to remember that a child may behave one way when you are not there.
1. If it is necessary to switch your working day with another parent, note the
change on the Working Parent/Snack schedule posted on the bulletin
board and notify the teacher. YOU are responsible for getting a
parent to work for you on your scheduled day.
2. For insurance purposes, and to allow your child to fully
experience your attendance, parents may not bring siblings
who are not enrolled in that class when working. Siblings are
welcome to attend most field trips and many classroom special events, however.
3. Parents are not to assist if they exhibit any symptoms of a cold or any other
contagious disease. Please coordinate a substitute if you will miss your scheduled
day due to illness.
4. Please note, in accordance with Social Services regulations, children cannot be
allowed in the kitchen.
5. The kitchen stove may not be used by the Nursery at any time, by order of the
Fire Marshall
6. Smoking is NOT permitted in the building or on school property at any time per
State Licensing requirements.
7. All children must be accompanied by an adult when in the bathroom. Please see
that used paper towels are placed in the wastebaskets, toilets are flushed, and
faucets are completely turned off.

8. Assisting parents who bring snacks/drinks are asked to prepare the eating area and
the snacks prior to snack time. Any leftover snack and or drink should be taken
home or disposed of appropriately, after each class.
9. Assisting parents who provide drink are also asked to provide cups and those
providing snacks are asked to provide napkins and any required plastic cutlery.
10. During snack time, classroom assistants are asked to sit at the tables with the
children. Encourage good manners such as the use of Please and Thank You, no
grabbing, passing politely, etc.
11. Assisting parents must wipe tables after snacks and put necessary items in the
refrigerator and rejoin the group.
12. If you are not planning to attend field trips with your child, it is your
responsibility to make arrangements for a ride, and someone to be responsible for
your child, if you want him/her to attend. Children are not allowed to ride with the
teacher.
13. Put children's names on all projects and include the last initial. Print or use all
capitals and spell names correctly from the name tags.
14. Interacting with the children is an essential part of our program. While visiting
with the other parents is one of the benefits of the program, please remember THE
CHILDREN COME FIRST!
15. Be consistent with the standards set by the teacher.
16. Be friendly - have fun yourself. Join in the singing of the songs and playing of
games. Show enthusiasm in the activities. Roam during free play and assist in
answers, and play with the children.
17. Before the children leave, remove name tags and return to the proper place. Check
that they have their own projects.
18. Once school is dismissed, children should wait in an area designated by the
teacher.
19. If there are any juice spills or paint on the floor, it must be wiped up with a wet
paper towel.
20. Juice containers, placemats, and any other utensils must be rinsed with one capful
of bleach per dishpan of water. Bleach is found in the designated area.
21. Always check with the teacher before you leave.
22. Refer to the working parents duties for a full list of daily tasks.
B. Guidelines for Working With the Children
1. Be constantly alert to the safety of the children. Help them avoid activities leading
to danger such as throwing blocks, crashing vehicles, running, etc.
2. Be genuine and friendly in working with the children. Don't talk down to them or
speak in an artificial voice.
3. Be generous and sincere in giving praise and encouragement.
4. Remember manners are "caught" rather than "taught". Treat the children with the
same respect you would give an adult.
5. Go to the child to speak to him/her. Be sure you have his/her attention and speak
simply and briefly.
6. When a conflict occurs between children, do not be too eager to help. If children
can settle their own differences, they learn in the process.

7. BE POSITIVE! Use "Do" instead of "Don’t".
8. Expect cooperation and you will get it.
9. Foster independence by helping a child help himself
10. ENCOURAGE. Do not DO for a child. It is in the DOING that children learn.
The finished product is not what's important!
11. It is a good idea to warn children in advance of a change in activity
12. Do not expect all children to participate in all activities at all times. A child may
want to just watch. This is fine, as long as he does not disturb the children who
are participating.
C. Rules of the Room
1. Chewing gum is not allowed by the children or Assisting
Parents.
2. Running is not allowed
3. Indoor voices should be used at all times. No screaming.
4. Pushing, kicking, and hitting are not allowed.
5. No "shooting" or gun games.
6. At clean-up time, all toys, books, etc., must be put away in their proper places.
Everyone helps.
7. Keep children away from all other rooms in the building.
8. Children are not to bring toys from home unless it is a special occasion, show
and tell, and then they will not be used for playing.
9. Paint shirts are worn by the children when painting at the easels and for most of
the activities at the art tables.
10. Children are not allowed in the school office area (if applicable)
2 When You Drop Off Your Child:
1. Arrive with your child no more than five minutes before school is to begin.
2. Please sign in (child’s name, name of person who dropped them off, and phone
number).
3. Check your mailbox and the bulletin board (or other posted news) for papers
and messages before and after each class. This includes field trip sign ups,
monthly schedules, and party volunteers.
4. Pick your child up on time or please phone if you will be delayed.
5. Please wait outside the classroom until the teacher dismisses your child.
6. Please sign out (signature of the person who picked the child up).
7. Keep children off equipment after school.
8. Make sure you pick up your child’s art project(s) for the day.
4.4 Parent Participation
As a co-op, parent participation is what makes the school
operate and co-ops are full of opportunities to become

Revised: 5/2019 Page 10 of 31
involved in your child’s preschool experience! General Membership meetings
are held according to a yearly posted schedule and provide critical information
about preschool happenings, classroom activities, provide an opportunity to
network with other parents and to hear form the teachers about exciting
classroom activities. These meetings are MANDATORY for all members to
attend. These meetings are for parents, guardians, non-nursery members
ONLY and children should not attend.
Parents who are unable to attend a General Membership meeting should make
arrangements with a friend or relative to attend the meeting in your place.
These meetings are MANDATORY and any absence will result in a $25 fine
per meeting that’s missed.
There are additional classroom volunteer opportunities available for those
members to maintain the smooth operations of the classroom. These
positions are filled at the Orientation meeting in August by those who
volunteer for each class. They are:
o Class Liaison-this role acts as a primary point of contact for any concerns
or issues that the parents do not feel comfortable approaching or working
directly with the teacher. The Class Liaison would then contact the
teacher, or the Teacher Liaison which is the Board President, to discuss
the matter and determine an action plan or resolution. It is important to
remember that this role must exercise sensitivity and confidentiality with
the issues or topics discussed.
o Emergency Parent-this role serves as a backup to the working parents
who cannot fulfill their regularly scheduled working parent duties due to
illness, or an unforeseen situation that arose. The Emergency parent must
be available on a short notice to work in place of the scheduled worker and
may also be called upon by the teacher in the event of a no show or when
the teacher requests additional assistance in the classroom.
o Substitute Teacher-the role of the class substitute teacher is to teach the
class in the absence of the teacher. In most cases, the teachers cover each
others classes, however, there are situations where this is not possible and
substitutes are needed. The regular teachers maintain daily lesson plans
for the substitutes. Substitute teachers must be both OSHA and CPR
certified. Classes for both certifications are typically offered by ABCN
annually. All required documentation by ABCN must be completed for
the substitute teachers (IE. TB tests, Criminal background checks, etc).
5 DISCIPLINE POLICY
The goal of discipline is to teach each child to be responsible for himself and his
actions. Each child must learn to respect others and the property of others. This goal is
achieved by one on a one-to-one basis to find out the "why" of the problem and to see
what possible solution can be found. After a discussion with the child, it is important

Member Handbook
Revised 5/2019
Revised: 5/2019 Page 11 of 31
to make certain he knows you are not upset with him but upset with the act itself.
Some action may have to be taken. For example, if the child continues to crash his
riding vehicle after a discussion, he may have to be told not to play with that vehicle
for the rest of that day. He would then be helped to find an alternate activity. If further
infractions occur, the child is then redirected. If the behavioral issue continues, an
incident report will then be written for any and all unacceptable behavior, (examples
of this would be including but not limited to biting, continuous hitting, kicking, or
spitting). After three incident reports, a conference would then be scheduled with the
teachers, parents, and executive board. If further action were needed, we would follow
the standard GDCNC procedures as instructed.
3 Procedure For Handling Discipline Issues
Since a cooperative preschool program is set up so that all adults work in the
classroom, it is important that there is consistency in discipline procedures. It is our
objective to handle every situation as positively as possible with the child's/
children's best interest in mind, thus preserving self-esteem and building confidence
and problem solving skills for children and parents, as well. The teacher is
responsible for discipline and to oversee the working parents, however, in the event
a working parent assist with discipline, the ABCN discipline procedures are
followed. Following is a procedure that supports this objective clearly in outline
form with specific examples to clarify each technique.
1. REDIRECTION. Whenever possible, redirecting a child/children (get them
involved in another activity) is a simple way to stop certain types of play,
behaviors.
Offer Choices. You may have to walk with or take the child (children) by the
hand and find something else that suits him/her.
If the child resists, you can say very specifically; "You may do this or that, but
you may not do that." Ex. You may build with blocks, or work at the
workbench, but you may not knock over Jason's building.")
2. CONFLICT RESOLUTION. When a conflict arises between two or more
children, acting as a facilitator helps the children make the decision about what to
do to remedy the situation.
Approach situation and ask what the problem is.
Restate what the child/children have told you: Ex. Meg was playing with
the purple pony, and you need it to be the mother, Jane. Is that right?")
Ask thought-provoking questions to get the children thinking about how
they can resolve this problem. Exs. ("Jane, is there another pony that could
be the mother?" or "Meg, you have so many ponies, do you think Jane
could use the purple one?", etc.)
Continue to ask questions, make suggestions so that the children can work
through the situation. This takes patience and time. What often happens is
the children lose interest in the toy altogether before the conflict is
resolved or you eventually have to make the final decision, such as putting

Member Handbook
Revised 5/2019

a time limit on the toy. But even then, the children will become familiar
with this communication skill and begin to use it.
**Very young children (young threes and under), will be harder to do this with since
they are still egocentric (naturally "me- oriented"). The process can be made simpler
according to the age/maturity level of the children.
3. CONFINING A CHILD. In extreme cases (where a child/children are out of
control or endangering him/herself or others), it may be necessary to remove a
child from the scene, and confining, maybe even restraining him/her in a chair or
on the floor. This is not a "Time Out", and should not be referred to as such, since
that sets up a negative situation. Instead it is a way to control and calm a child
who is upset or has upset or hurt someone else.
It is important to explain to him/her that they need to stay there with you until
they calm down (This is when you may need to restrain by sitting in front of
the child while you talk to him. If a child is very upset and you just leave
him/her there, he may just get right back out of the chair because he is angry,
and now you have created a power struggle situation where no one wins.)
Tell him that after he has calmed down, he is welcome to rejoin the group.
This gives him the choice to re-enter the play or stay where he is at, and also
clearly shows that the behavior will not be tolerated.
These incidents should be discussed with the parent of the aggressors), and in
the event that someone was hurt physically or emotionally, that child's parent
also. (It is good to include the child(ren) in this discussion so they are aware
that it is important.)
If the aggressive behavior continues, the child(ren), can be "shadowed" by the
teacher or a working parent to oversee the child's behavior and help him/her to
make better choices and/or control his/her temper.
If the behavior still persists, the parent will he asked to be present in class
each day with his/her child until the problem is resolved. .
4. INCIDENT/ACCIDENT REPORT. In any situation where a child is hurt, either
deliberately or accidentally, and/or is demonstrating problem behavior consistently, a
report should be filled out in duplicate, a copy to be kept at school and one to give to
the parent.
Notification Procedure/Process for children who have experienced an incident
1. Both Parents will be notified verbally of any incidents that occurred during school
time on the conclusion of class.
2. Written report will be issued and needs to be signed by both parents of the involved
child. Copies of written report will be placed in the files of all parties involved and
also in the teacher’s incident report file.
3. After three incidents involving the same child, a meeting will be called to discuss
continued enrollment, behavior modification, or further action required. Planned
meeting will involve: teachers’, parent’s, and ABCN President.

5. ADDITIONAL IDEAS TO KEEP IN MIND:
In an incident where there is a "victim", that child should always be consoled
first. If he/she has been hurt this is obvious, however it is important to attend
to that person even if not hurt physically, since it models empathy (which is a
learned emotion). Also, rushing to the aggressor is sometimes the desired
response the child is looking for (inappropriate behavior is a common
motivator for children seeking attention.).
Expecting young children to say, "I'm sorry" is unrealistic in many situations,
and should not be forced. Usually children of the preschool age are not sorry
because they are egocentric; they are focused on their own needs. Adults need
to remember that they are not being selfish, this is normal in the early
childhood years. By modeling proper behavior, we will teach them to be
empathic toward others, develop patience and to use their words to get what
they need. In addition, trying to force a child to say something is impossible
and more times than not, you will end up in a power struggle. (Instead, you
can say: "John, you've hurt Pat's feelings. Look at his face. Do you see how
sad he is? Next time you are upset with Pat, use your words to tell him he
made you angry, instead of calling him names", for example. With this
procedure, the child will understand the consequences of what he's done and
may even apologize on his own. The adult will not end up in a situation where
he/she has to follow through with a child who will not give in.
With clear cut guidelines, and our main objective being to teach positive
behaviors and techniques instead of punishing or humiliating a child for
misbehavior, all the members of the co-op (teachers, parents and children)
will feel secure in their positions with each other.
