1719 Perkins died and William Pike bought the brewery 67Founded by William Pike, born in Poole. Sent to be apprenticed to hisbrothers cousin Mr William Mudge. William Mudge commenced as acooper in 1666, by 1705 he was brewing at Penny Street. Mudge’sbusiness was transferred to Mr Thomas Perkins during Pike’sapprenticeship. In 1719 William Pike founded his brewery in an oldbrewhouse at 19 High Street called the Antelope. This was built in 1670by Mayor John White. There were originally three public houses:1 The Blue Anchor, Mill Gate. Later called the Elephant and Castle. Licence transferred to the Elephant and Castle in Sultan Road when theGovernment extended the fortifications.2 Butchers Arms, Bishop Street3 Joyners Arms, College Street. Now the Old Royal Oak, built byWilliam Mudge in 1705. In 1747 Pike bought Messrs Ribouleaus’s
