21 Trajan, Sestertius 19.61g, laureate draped bust right, rev REX PARTHIS DATVS S C, Trajan seated on high platform placing diadem on head of king Parthamaspates, before them Parthia kneeling (RIC 667). Reverse unclear, obverse lightly tooled to reveal a pleaing portrait, overall about fine, rare. £60-80The puppet king Parthamaspartes only held that status for a short period of time. Shortly after his investiture Roman forces withdew from Parthia and, soon after, Trajan died. He was subsequently given the kingdom of Osrhoene by Hadrian.

In the summer of 1428 the Council’s orders were carried out by Richard Fleming, Bishop of Lincoln, who was one of Wycliffe's first pupils. His party opened the grave, seized Wycliffe's bones, burned them and scattered their dust in the nearby River Swift.

GREECE

456 General Johann Matthias, Graf von Schulemburg, the Great Siege of 1716, by the Turks, and the erction of a statue to Schulemburg commemorating their defeat, Copper Medal, 1716, by George Vestner, statue on high plinth at harbour entrance, rev legend in thirteen lines in oval wreath, 38mm. Good fine. £60-80The second great Turkish siege took place in 1716. The Turks would not give up the Ionian Islands, but the poor state of the Venitian economy made any action unsustainable. However von Schulemburg was sent to Corfu in February whilst the maurauding Pasha Janoum Hotza soon followed. The Turkish army commenced landing on the 8 th

July and a month later were asking Schulemburg to surrender. His refusal, and a massive storm which destroyed much of the Turkish fleet turned the situation in his favour and by the 11 th August the the Turks abandoned Corfu and the siege was lifted.

(6) £150-200Isaac Earlysman Sparrow was a passenger in a balloon flight at Oxford, on the 23 June 1823, piloted by Charles Green (see lot 1911 below). He paid £50 and, watched by a crowd of some 5,000 people, had quite an eventful flight, the netting catching a chimney on take-off and repairing the balloon during the flight with a silk handkerchief. On landing in the trees at Nettlebed Heath, Sparrow was thrown out of the gondola, but managed to catch a rope and saved Green from drifting away. The tokens are believed to be by either T Wyon or T W Ingram. Sparrows “Leather Sauce” was not a commercial success, and he was declared bankrupt.

Very fine. £40-60From a series of six medals commemorating the Naval Brigade and the Siege of Paris. A die for the legend (without the border) is in the National Maritime Museum’s collection. The Battle of Buzenval (also known as the Battle of Montretout or Mont-Valérien) took place on January 19, 1871, four months after Paris had been besieged.
