Ancient Egypt Vocabulary

Cataract - A large waterfall

Delta - An area of low land where a river spreads into many smaller rivers near the sea

Papyrus - A plant like grass that grows in water or a type of paper made from this plant

Dynasty - A family or other rulers whose parents, grandparents etc have ruled the country for many years

Afterlife - The life that some people believe people have after death

Embalm - To treat a dead body with chemicals, oils, etc. to prevent it from decaying

Mummy - A dead body that has been preserved by wrapping it in cloth

Hieroglyphics - A system of writing that uses pictures to represent words

Pharaoh - A ruler of ancient Egypt

Obelisk - A tall pointed stone pillar, built to remind people of an event or of someone who has died

Access - The right to enter a place, use something, see someone, etc.

Tribute - A payment of goods or money by one ruler or country to another more powerful one, especially in order to be protected

Pyramid - A large stone tomb with four triangular walls that slope in to a point at the top, found especially in ancient Egypt.
