I’m pleased to share with you another
edition of the Tiger Tribune. So much
positive, both in school culture and
academics, has taken place during this
first semester. Following the completion
of our strategic plan, the District identified
areas for improvement with one being
improved communications and student
opportunity. My administrative staff has been diligent in
creating new ways to share information, gather feedback
and work towards doing what is best for our students.
Recently, the Michigan Department of Education
announced the Integrated Continuous Improvement
Process (MICIP). “MICIP involves a shift in how we think
about improving student outcomes to engage in a
comprehensive and continuous improvement cycle”.
Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Process.
Michigan Department of Education, October 2019,
www.michigan.gov/mde-micip. Accessed 17 Dec. 2019.
Throughout the year, the school and district level teams are
preparing, shifting mindsets and understanding the process
and reporting platforms we will utilize to monitor and
establish our goals. The District Improvement Team,
consisting of staff and parents, is excited for this new
approach, as it provides a broad look at how schools can
address the whole child’s needs. While it is a work in
progress, we feel that this approach will align with needs
identified in our strategic plan.
As we consider addressing the needs of the whole child,
we want to acknowledge you, our parents, and what a
pivotal role you play in your child’s future successes. In an
article published by the Center for Parent and Teen
Communication, seven strategies of effective parenting
were identified. Becoming the Best Parent You Can Be.
Center for Parent & Teen Communication: Strengthening
Family Connections, August 2019,
www.parentandteen.com. Accessed 17 Dec. 2019.
1. Remember all that is good in your child.
2. Be a positive role model-even on your best and worst
days
3. Consider the role of parent vs. friend
4. What works? Understand the power of balanced
parenting
5. Self Care: Take care of yourself so your children learn
by example
6. Remember unconditional love
7. Foster student independence and interdependence
In addition, I’ve found the informational videos for each
point very useful. Videos can be found through the web
link: parentandteen.com/effective-parenting-videos
Together, with continuous improvement and in keeping with
what is best for our children in mind, we will meet the
needs of all of our students.

We are studying the roots of slavery in America, and we are
trying to really learn about it from the enslaved person’s
perspective. There are rumors that enslaved people would
sew messages, or symbols, into quilts that they were sewing
in order to tell a fugitive slave where to go, or not to go. We
looked at rumors that no such quilts were used on the
Underground Railroad, but historical records, and actual quilts
from the time period tell a different story. The students were
to create a replica “quilt block”, using one of the Underground
Railroad symbols. I plan to hang the student’s collective
“quilt” in the hallway outside of our classroom. My Mom
sews, so I am lucky enough that she and her quilting friends
made a replica of an Underground Railroad quilt. They made
this quilt to hang in the Monroe Public Library, where it was
for years. When they took it down, I got to use it for my
classroom. When the blanket is not here, we are using it at
my house, after all, it is one of my Mom’s quilts.
